    Lesson Plans: The Lesson Plans link has SO MANY lesson plans. They are designed at a middle school level but can easily be adapted (says them). The lesson plans are organized by Location/State; Theme; Time period; and Skill - meaning that you can click on any one of those subdivisions and search them that way. Very exciting! You should definitely check these out. Even if you're not in that state, they still have pictures, mapping materials, and activity ideas that you can use to incorporate geography into historic concepts. For example, the Battle of Bunker Hill lesson contains two maps (of Boston today and in 1775) and inquiry questions for these, a section of text (looks like a high school level to me) and inquiry questions for that AND three images (one a sketch of an encampment and two pictures) and inquiry questions for those. These might make fantastic "Do Now"s for the beginning of the lesson even if you didn't use any of the rest of the sites info. So neat!

    Also they have lots of tips for how you can incorporate place into your lessons. AND! you can submit your own lessons. They take you through the TwHP lesson creation process and you can submit them.

      The site is useful in that it contains an interactive map of the sites, pictures of events that occured at the sites and an indepth list of sites by state. However, one issue is that at least for me the different pictures and site graphics took awhile to load making it less than user friendly.

The National Portrait Gallery/Education/Teacher Programs - 1 views

    The National Portrait Gallery is one of the Smithsonian Museums in the DC area. The great thing about NPG is that it has resources available online for teachers. There are a variety of school programs and teacher programs but the best offerings are the online exhibitions. It is like having the gallery right there in your classroom. Some of those exhibits include George Washington: A national Treasure, Presidents in Waiting, and A Brush with History. The online exhibits are usable in the classroom directly from a computer or lap top. For example, the George Washington online exhibit begins with a famous portrait accompanied by an audio explanation of the portrait and the symbolic and historical items found within the portrait. Using the portrait as a starting point provides students with a visual association of that person and the historical events surrounding that person. There is also a link to biographical information about Washington and his role in our country's history. The Teacher's Guide associated with the George Washington exhibit includes lesson plans, activities and other teaching ideas; all printable and useable in class. NPG also offers two publications both of which are available on line. "The Patriot Papers," designed for students, features various historical events in an interesting and engaging fashion. For example, there is a "Special Edition on Slavery" featuring information on slavery and the key players involved. One of the articles in this publication is "A Chat with Harried: 1869" and also includes her portrait. The second publication, NPG in your Classroom, provides information to teachers on how to integrate NPG into classroom lessons. There are many more valuable tools on this site such as a "Reading Portraiture Guide for Educators." Check out the site….it is awesome!!!

    This website contains a great list of Historic Sites in DC - for example, I have bookmarked the page for the Old Stone House in Georgetown. If you select, "List of Sites" - you will be taken to a listing by neighborhoods of other historic sites in the DC area. This could allow you to search for places near your school that could be a great resource to incorporate into your lessons. Many, including the Old Stone House, offer tours throughout the day. The Old Stone House is also staffed by well-informed Park Rangers who are eager to share their knowledge.

    Well, it looks like a student in this group shared this in the past, but what a great website! I'll put up some more sticky notes. This website features a large number of primary source material of different media and is strong in its content. Beyond that, this site features information about the methods historians use (interesting to high school students, applicable to college students), a database of reviewed websites, lesson plans, syllabi, and teaching tips. A pretty comprehensive resource.

      Another good source that I used in my class with Brec is called "Reading in the Dark", which is geared specifically for using film in the English classroom; however, the book provides a review of this basic terminology of film analysis mentioned here.

      This site doesn't go quite as in depth as I would hope, however these four frameworks do manage to get one thinking about the different ways in which film might be used in the classroom

  • While film can serve as an engaging introduction to a subject, students should be aware of the constant shading and biases, why these occur, and what they accomplish.

      The book I mention in my sticky note below has a great section on critically analyzing documentaries, which some people have a bad habit of regarding as "fact", simply because the film is labeled as a documentary.
  • Documentary footage, however, is never wholly objective.
  • An examination of filming and editing, circumstances surrounding production and distribution, and the producer's intentions are essential for studying such material.

    This is sort of a basic review of how and why we as teachers might use film in the classroom. This is my first post on this issue; I am searching for some more in-depth sites that might have models for lesson plans. Many sites have lesson plans based around a specific film; a site that provides lesson plan templates that are applicable across a wide variety of films would be more applicable/useful. However, the comments made here by Paris provide a good base from which to start thinking about the idea.

    I linked up the Virginia Military Institutes archive home page because it provides easy access to primary resources. Not only that, but they have a page dedicated to the real life subject of a Young Adult Historical Fiction Novel called The Ghost Cadet (which I have read and enjoyed.) You can find this page by clicking on the side bar "Civil War & New Market" and it's about the second or third option down. I think that in teaching a young audience about the Civil War, it could be useful to connect it back to a book about a boy nearly their age who fought in it. This web site could help wiht that.

    The Perry-Castaneda Map Collection at the University of Texas-Austin has a great selection of online maps. They have modern political maps, historical maps, maps about history, regional maps, thematic maps (population, climate, energy, ethnic, religious). Many of the maps have large PDF formats that are of great quality and detail.

However you CAN access the over 2,000 lesson plans (in the "Lesson Plan Archive" below) they have on the site. I did a search for 9-12 grade economics lessons and hit paydirt. I <3 NY Times.

      SERIOUSLY!?!?!? The New York TImes makes themed historical crossword puzzles!?!?! So many to choose from. I'm not sure how helpful this will actually be to students. It may be neat if they could play it online and google search for answers. Might be a cool way to learn even more information on events we cover in class. It would be important to not just make this busy work (why I had word finds).

      This is a great site for visual learners. Being able to see political and culutral transformations of continents is an incredible tool for students of all ages. Unfortunately, not all maps on this site are free. There is a nominal fee that charges for acess to more obscure maps.

    I'm posting this site for a number of reasons. The first being that it relates directly to the Takaki chapter we read this week. Angel Island was a sort of "Ellis Island" for west coast immigration, and this is their historical website. I wanted to find images of picture brides, and this site came up as having a lot of images from that period of japanese immigration. So this website could be very useful for those teachers who want to incorporate images as primary sources in teaching this part of American history. Additionally, my friend's mother had recently been to Italy and came back with a number of ancestral records she has asked me to translate. This led me to question what sources Asian Americans can use to trace their own ancestry in this country - though unfortunately Angel Island does not offer resources similar to that of Ellis Island.

  • Up to half of the men that survived the journey to Canada walked across the border to begin their new lives in America. They had no desire to live under the Union Jack flag in sparsely populated British North America
  • They viewed the United States with its anti-British tradition and its bustling young cities as the true land of opportunity
  • American ships were held to higher standards than British ships by the U.S. Passenger Acts, a set of laws passed by Congress regulating the number of passengers ships coming to America could carry as well as their minimal accommodations. Congress reacted to the surge of Irish immigration by tightening the laws, reducing the number of passengers allowed per ship, thereby increasing fares. America, congressmen had complained, was becoming Europe's "poor house."

    I discovered this website while looking for information on Chinese and Japanese immigration. This website supports the newspaper Harper's Weekly that was published from 1857 to 1912. The publication reported on the relevant issues of the day such as immigration, slavery and presidential elections. Not only do they have the actual papers in their archive, they also provide summaries of some of the articles. There is a section dedicated to Immigration and Ethnic America. While there is a great deal of information on the site that is fee to all, one must subscribe to gain access to the entire site. The site also provides links to many other websites that support learning such as lessons, activities, and games. Some of their links are oriented around subjects that were relevant during the time the papers were published. There is also a featured "cartoon" of the day that is taken from the period of 1857 to 1912. It is a great resource for teachers!
