What's Not to 'Like'? - 3 views

  •
Describes how social media can support learning and argues that restrictive social media policies should be re-thought. Suggests making a distinction between policies (what is specifically allowed and not allowed) and guidelines (recommendations for best practice). References specific US legislation and education standards but the proposed framework for guidelines has general relevance with learning and behaviour the focus, not technology and tools.

Libraries and social media: the activity is important, not the tool - 3 views

  •
If we were playing a game of word association, what words would come straight to mind if I said 'social media'? The chance is that you'd say things like Facebook, Twitter, maybe LinkedIn or Pinterest. That's perfectly understandable, and in many ways that is what social media is - or rather, they are the platforms on which social media activities take place.

Yammer is used as an internal social media network. There are some clear directions for dealing with social media and how to deal with adverse comments. This looks to me to be a good working policy.

Social Media Use Policy for Staff (CSU) - 2 views

  •
This policy contains the expected don't slander the institution and a reminder that it is on there to stay. One statement caught my attention "A staff member should also consider carefully whether they are willing to accept students as social media "friends" as this might be perceived as a conflict of interest" (point 22). Not something I had thought of, I have been friends on social media with teachers before (high school, small class, extenuating circumstances). Largely it reads like every business social media policy I've read, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

If not us, who? Social media policy and the iSchool classroom - 0 views

  •
This journal mentioned that the social networking tools could be provided the chances for users to do self learning by sharing the resources on the online platforms. To establish the social networking tools in schools properly, protecting the personal privacy and maintaining the openness for teaching should be taken the balance. Developing the social media policy is important for the schools. It could make the social media tools bringing the advantages to the users but also protecting the resources.

"Using social media effectively in corporate setting requires a certain level of trust." (Golden, M., 2010, p. 78). This is an answer to "How rigid does your social media policy need to be?". This is the matter of the "tone" and the balance of "do" and "don't" list in the policy. Bottom line can be summarized as: "Don't do anything stupid."
