Nathan Goodyear on 02 Mar 15Elevated insulin levels in men is associated with decreased liver production of SHBG and thus reduced SHBG levels. Obesity is associated with decreased urinary cortisol in this study. The authors found the low cortisol also contributed to the low SHBG as well. Low SHBG is associated with puberty, obesity, IR, hypothyroidism, and during androgen therapy. SHBG is increased as a result of aging, short-term fasting, Estrogen, hyperthyroid, and liver disease.
