Standards for Web Content Interoperability The Open Archives Initiative develops and promotes interoperability standards that aim to facilitate the efficient dissemination of content. OAI has its roots in the open access and institutional repository movements. Continued support of this work remains a cornerstone of the Open Archives program. Over time, however, the work of OAI has expanded to promote broad access to digital resources for eScholarship, eLearning, and eScience.

"A second phenomenon which did a lot of harm to the European universities, was the lasting glorification of the American higher education system. Many politicians, but also scientists themselves, see this system as a permanent source of excellence and success without-as US scientist Martin Trow (1997) writes-getting the general picture of the American higher education system. LaTeX is a high-quality typesetting system; it includes features designed for the production of technical and scientific documentation. LaTeX is the de facto standard for the communication and publication of scientific documents. LaTeX is available as free software.

"What they found here was a negative correlation. The MORE serotonin transporters you had, the less likely you were to reject unfair offers. The authors interpret this to mean that people with lower levels of serotonin transporter had a harsher sense of "fairness", than those with higher levels of serotonin transporter, and were more inclined to reject unfair offers. Why could this be the case? The authors looked at the personalities of the individuals. You might think that people with more aggressive personalities (or at least a tendency to get offended) might be more likely to reject unfair offers, but it turned out that this wasn't the case. Instead, it was people with more peaceful personalities, but stronger measures of trust, were more likely to reject the unfair offers. The authors believe that the people with higher trustfulness had higher standards of behavior, and thus were more likely to reject unfair offers, even if the rejected ended up badly for them"

The Library of Congress is launching a review of the bibliographic framework to better accommodate future needs. A major focus of the initiative will be to determine a transition path for the MARC 21 exchange format in order to reap the benefits of newer technology while preserving a robust data exchange that has supported resource sharing and cataloging cost savings in recent decades. This work will be carried out in consultation with the format's formal partners -- Library and Archives Canada and the British Library -- and informal partners -- the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek and other national libraries, the agencies that provide library services and products, the many MARC user institutions, and the MARC advisory committees such as the MARBI committee of ALA, the Canadian Committee on MARC, and the BIC Bibliographic Standards Group in the UK.

It is made up of an online database of curated experiments coupled to a customized instance of the Galaxy analysis engine with tools for gene list manipulation and molecular profile comparisons. UBY is a large-scale lexical-semantic resource for natural language processing (NLP) based on the ISO standard Lexical Markup Framework (LMF). UBY combines a wide range of information from expert-constructed and collaboratively constructed resources for English and German. Currently, UBY holds structurally and semantically interoperable versions of nine resources in two languages:  English WordNet, Wiktionary, Wikipedia, FrameNet and VerbNet,  German Wikipedia, Wiktionary and GermaNet, and multilingual OmegaWiki. 

Synthetic Biology Open Language (SBOL) is a software standard for the electronic exchange of specifications and descriptions of genetic parts, devices, modules, systems, and engineered genomes.

BrainBrowser is web-based, 3D visualization tool for neuroimaging. Using web-standard technologies, such as WebGL and HTML5, it allows for real time manipulation and analysis of 3D neuroimaging data whether it be precalculated maps, such as the MACACC data set (Mapping Anatomical Correlations Across Cerebral Cortex), or models provided by the user in MNI object format and data in one of the many currently supported formats (Minc, Nifti, object files, plain text).

The seminar begins with an examination of the fundamental vocabulary and concepts related to metrology. Topics include: accuracy, precision, calibration, and "uncertainty ratios". Several of the standard methods for analyzing measurement variation are then described and explained, as derived from AIAG's Measurement System Analysis reference book. The methods include: Gage R&R (ANOVA method, for 3 gages, 3 persons, 3 replicates, and 10 parts), Gage Correlation (for 3 gages), Gage Linearity, and Gage Bias. The seminar ends with an explanation of how to combine all relevant uncertainty information into an "Uncertainty Budget" that helps determine the appropriate width of QC specification intervals (i.e., "guard-banded specifications"). Spreadsheets are used to demonstrate how to perform the methods described during the seminar.

Differentiated human cells have been reprogrammed to an embryonic-like state with the addition of only one gene, rather than the standard four. This should advance techniques for the efficient production of high-quality patient-specific stem cells.

In this week's edition of Nature, a cohort of researchers report the latest findings from two of the major players in this search for gravitational waves - The LIGO Scientific Collaboration located in the US and the Virgo Collaboration in France and Italy. The paper reports the latest data from these two experiments collected 2005 - 2007, and discusses the implication of these results for the standard picture of cosmology.

Fermilab physicists are examining the production, properties, and decay of top quarks to gain the most complete picture of the particle possible. They compare their observations to predictions made in the Standard Model of physics and in theories that build on that model.
