10 best free PM apps - 1 views

  •
A blog outlining the top 10 free online project management software, because we can't all buy MS Project. This blog provides a brief overview of each software as well as links to the full site.
  •
I'ts great to have all of these in one place. It allows you to compare them together. Two I have looked at for use in Education are ZOHO and Huddle.
  •
Great add Brook! I came across this article when I was searching for a PM tool for our office. I've tried Basecamp before and I like how intuitive it is. Have you tried any of the other ones?

project management plan, change management, communications management, and others
  •
Rose - Thanks for this. I learn best from examples and seeing how others approach. I love that the templates include not only instructions for completion but also "case scenario" text to give you an example of a completed form. Very helpful.
  •
Great site! I agree with Rose - the templates are really helpful, especially for a visual person like me. Thanks! - Christine

PMI CAPM Certification | Project Management Institute - 0 views

  •
As students of project management, we learn how PMI's Project Management Professional Certification (PMP) is the ultimate PM industry certification to obtain (with which I agree). The PMP is a great goal to reach for, however, most students of project management are nowhere close to meeting the eligibility requirements necessary to pursue the PMP. You may or may not know that PMI has another option for entry-level project management professionals called the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM). The CAPM is appealing because it serves as a much more attainable stepping stone in our quest for the coveted PMP. - Duncan McBogg

This is the program Dropbox, not to be mistaken for the UCD dropbox. This was a great tool for our team this semester, and I will be using it a lot more for other projects. The tutorial is great because he takes you step by step on his desktop.

Kaizen for Projects - 0 views

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting! aizen is the engine of competitiveness in the Toyota Production System. It can have the same effect on the how we do our projects. Literature is thin on the topic.

Google Docs - 0 views

  •
Just in case someone has been living under a rock, I'm adding this. I can't tell you how many times people at work email files hundreds of times when we could all just collaborate in Google Docs. We used Google Hangouts to chat in former projects and could actually see when each other was typing something. Love it!

I was really resistant to the idea of Google docs when it first came into being. Now, I am a convert. It is the most fabulously simple resource for working collaboratively.
  •
GoogleDocs can be incredibly useful but not everyone is on the google bandwagon. I know for me personally I use it when I need to and it is great when everyone is working synchronously as a team to develop content or a document. They have done a good job with their suite of products, i just wish when you copied and pasted from Office it wasn't so distorted.
  •
I agree, Google Docs is worth posting. I just heard yesterday (completely unconfirmed) that Google Docs in Boulder employs 1,000 people. for what it lacks in perfections, it also saves us from saving and potentially storing unfinished documents. As Martha would say, "It's a good thing."
  •
I agree with Jen. While GoogleDocs is a great time saver I wish you could do more with formatting, pasting, etc. The formatting also differs if you download the doc onto a Mac which can be a pain when working with a group. Overall, though I think it is a worthwhile collaborative tool.
  •
Good call. My team spent an entire meeting demonstrating how to use Live Meeting via Outlook, only to later find out that it costs our company each time we initiate a call. I mentioned Hangouts as an alternative, and nobody had any idea what I was talking about, despite the fact that all of my teammates have Gmail. Yikes! Sometimes its scary how much we don't know!

4 Tips for Working With SMEs - 0 views

  •
No matter how great we are at creating learning solutions, we will not even get off the ground without the right content and context. Sometimes, working with SMEs can be one of the most difficult parts of the process. This article provides four great suggestions for how to effectively work with your SME.

    Great article and tips!
  •
I really enjoyed this read! Great information on communicating with SMEs and how to keep moving.
  •
The "Help them take a step back" bullet is an excellent point. A lot of times, SMEs try to put EVERYTHING about a topic in a training and if you tell them everything, they remember nothing. I use Action Mapping to keep SME's (and me) focused on what content should be taught. Great article!
  •
I like #2. So many times SMEs loose sight of the project objective. :-)
  •
Jenna, these guidelines are simple but powerful. What of the greatest challenges I had on a recent project was to get the SME to back off and take care of the content, not the learning materials. I never really succeeded but it might have helped if I had the #4 guideline instilled in our heads early in the project.

Creating your project budget: Where to begin? - 3 views

I liked this discussion about making a budget.

That was good to see the part about calculating the costs of the Risks. It seems like many times budgets are created for 'clear day' situations.
  •
Hi Peggy. Sorry I didn't know about this link before I began the Cost Analysis for our team project. Thanks for the information.
  •
It's so true that not all costs can be measured in dollars.

Effective email communications - 2 views

Basic, but sometimes underutilized, steps to better communication via email.

This one is close to my ll share at work :)
  •
Definitely good reminders for the workplace! It reminds me of a coworker who had the "reply all" button removed form their email accounts at her previous company because people just couldn't help themselves from over using it. These are good rules to pass around every once in awhile :).
  •
I think we take for granted, because we have all been writing emails for a while, that we know how to make them effective. I would definitely share this at work!

ADDIE Model | Instructional Systems Design ISD - 1 views

  •
This is a pretty accessible, concise outline for using ADDIE for project management in ID. I find it interesting because there is criticism that ADDIE is not adequate for project management, but I am still not entirely sure why. This adaptation looks pretty sound.

Quizlet - 1 views

This is a pretty neat tool I came across the other day. It's called Quizlet, and it lets you create flashcards and other games... for Free! I like it because you could use it to send out some pre pr post training materials, (acronyms, terms, ect.)
  •
This is great! I use Brainscape.com to put in flashcards for my Spanish students. There is an app in the app store that pairs with it called "Flashcardlet" so that you can do flashcards on your mobile. I don't know if there is android app for it, but I'm sure there is.

His book helps team members to realize the importance of emotions when working with a team. I use this book in my administration class because we must always remember the human factor when working in groups to accomplish a task.

Make Your Emotions Work for You in Negotiations - 2 views

  •
#2 is important to recognize. When one can identify emotional triggers then it is easier to learn to work with others who may accidentally set off those emotions without meaning too. Human beings unconsciously reflection and interpret others emotions so it is important to understand your own.

#1 Mindfulness meditation has been practiced by the buddhist monks for centuries. Brain imaging studies show that an eight week course of this meditation can affect the brain by reducing flight/fight and increasing concentration http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/guest-blog/2014/06/12/what-does-mindfulness-meditation-do-to-your-brain/
  •
Can't agree more with the idea that we need to reflect on and recognize our emotions. We spend far too much time doing it to others, but often forget to look inside.

Teambox - 2 views

  •
Teambox is an online tool for project management. It's free for up to 5 members on a team, so it's great for small projects. I love apps and websites that help keep me organized, so I am all over Teambox. The downside is that currently there isn't a gantt chart function, but It looks like they may release one in the next update.
