    What:
    Using play to meet goals will address why children play and how we as therapists can plan and facilitate playful activities to help the children we work with meet their goals. Video clips of therapists in several disciplines will be used to support webinar content. This webinar will help teachers, health care providers, therapists, parents/families, and caregivers expand their knowledge on how and why children play. This information can assist children with disabilities starting from birth and carry on through their adolescence. This training will help attendees better understand play and utilize the tools that they have in their home to offer children of all abilities at any age and stage.

    Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a professional advocate? What kind of training is needed? How do I attract clients? What do I do after I'm hired? What about billing? And how do I avoid burn-out? This session provides a starting point to answer these questions. Many parents, therapists, retired school district staff, and others routinely ask me how to become a professional advocate. Of course, there is no One Right Way to do this, no certification, no road map. . . and so the goal is to help participants consider the next steps, to provide them with some information about what has worked for some professional advocates, and to connect them with resources. This presentation will cover the following issues, among others: role of the advocate, sources/types of training, work environments, attracting clients, advocate's intake and next steps, maintaining records and confidentiality, billing, pro bono work, the importance of boundaries, and networking resources. The presentation will also reference COPAA's Voluntary Code of Ethics for advocates.

    The AUCD is hosting thier fourth student webinar series. This webinar will focus on aging with an intellectual disability, topics could include health disparities or health promotion.  The next webinar will take place on Wednesday July 31 from 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm Mountain.

    The webinar is sponsored by The Arc for People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.  Our last webinar participants included doctors, a dentist, therapists, students, Arc chapter employees, and state/local health department employees- so a pretty broad audience. The webinar will be live captioned.

    If you are a student or know of any students who might be interested in presenting, please let us know. Each presentation is 15 minutes long (3 presenters) with five minutes of questions at the end.

    This group is designed for parents who are dealing with specific challenges usually encountered once their adoptees are settled in (~ 1 year or more into the adoption), for parents with challenging children and interested others. CONNECT (formerly Together in Parenting) is a process-based support group lead by a licensed therapist that gives parents a venue in which to form an emotional connection with other parents experiencing similar issues with their children. Each month, we address concerns of parents who are present via peer support and therapeutic suggestions. Parents who are experiencing challenging times with their children find the support of other parents who have been on the adoption and parenting journey for some time to be invaluable.     Children with autism and related neurodevelopmental disorders present numerous challenges for therapists and educators. They have significant processing deficits that impact their functioning across domains, and can stretch the knowledge and resources of even experienced practitioners. Often viewed through the lens of "behavior," the symptoms these children display are more accurately described as manifestations of inefficient and ineffective processing. Understanding how information processing deficits impact these children paves the way for applying a new generation of strategies designed to address core processing problems and promote meaningful skill development. Objectives include: Describe the connection between information processing deficits and symptoms in autism/related disorders. Differentiate between methods that promote rote behavior and those that develop meaningful thinking. Explain how to adjust the pacing of activities to improve processing, communication and behavior. Discuss communication modifications that support processing speed and effectiveness. Describe how processing problems impact behavior and hot to respond in ways that diffuse behavior more quickly.
