    What:
    Children with autism and related neurodevelopmental disorders present numerous challenges for therapists and educators. They have significant processing deficits that impact their functioning across domains, and can stretch the knowledge and resources of even experienced practitioners. Often viewed through the lens of "behavior," the symptoms these children display are more accurately described as manifestations of inefficient and ineffective processing. Understanding how information processing deficits impact these children paves the way for applying a new generation of strategies designed to address core processing problems and promote meaningful skill development. Objectives include: Describe the connection between information processing deficits and symptoms in autism/related disorders. Differentiate between methods that promote rote behavior and those that develop meaningful thinking. Explain how to adjust the pacing of activities to improve processing, communication and behavior. Discuss communication modifications that support processing speed and effectiveness. Describe how processing problems impact behavior and hot to respond in ways that diffuse behavior more quickly.     Each year the National Native American Parent Center presents an annual conference for Native American family members, tribal leaders, health professionals, mental health professionals, tribal, public school professionals, and others who are interested in ensuring the special education needs for Native American students who are ages 0 - 26.

    Workshops focus on strategies and methods to increase outcomes for Native American students with disabilities, and increase parent involvement in the special education process. We offer information on best practices working with Native American students with disabilities to produce successful educational outcomes. This conference will provide information on: successful strategies that promote collaborative relationships between tribes, schools, and families; successful methods in positive behavioral interventions, the latest research and data on effective classroom practices and strategies for Native American students.

    This group is designed for parents who are dealing with specific challenges usually encountered once their adoptees are settled in (~ 1 year or more into the adoption), for parents with challenging children and interested others. CONNECT (formerly Together in Parenting) is a process-based support group lead by a licensed therapist that gives parents a venue in which to form an emotional connection with other parents experiencing similar issues with their children. Each month, we address concerns of parents who are present via peer support and therapeutic suggestions. Parents who are experiencing challenging times with their children find the support of other parents who have been on the adoption and parenting journey for some time to be invaluable.Therapeutic suggestions are offered when appropriate and helpful. For parents who need the support of other families who are at the beginning of the adoption journey and who would like information and the camaraderie of other families at the same early stage in the process, we offer the EQUIP support group. More information: Summer series - Fall series  What: When a school proposes the disciplinary removal of a student with special needs for more than 10 days, the school must first hold a Manifestation Determination Review meeting. This review process is designed to provide a safeguard to children with special needs to ensure that the school does not excessively punish those children who are misbehaving as a direct result of their disability. If this causal connection can be established, a school cannot issue a removal and must instead provide appropriate behavioral supports and services. In this panel, we will explore the inherent problems with the review process as it currently exists and propose solutions that would provide meaningful protections for children with special needs who have behavioral issues.     What:
    The purpose of Montana PAK is to develop a monthly forum for parents to collaborate and receive information about special education advocacy and the federal/state laws that protect their children. In addition, PAK aims to provide a public medium to discuss educational concerns and to raise awareness about the scope of services, as well as local resources, which are available for children. One of those services is an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). An IEP is meant to be a collaborative process between parents, teachers, officials of the school system, and sometimes others who have expertise in the nature of a child's disability or provision of particular services. Parents are often overwhelmed by the special education process as they seek to improve their child's programming during IEP meetings. As an essential member of the IEP team, parents must have an understanding of the legal requirements which guide a school district's practices. Parents can improve their advocacy skills by obtaining a solid understanding of their child's legal rights under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504), the American with Disabilities Act (ADA), and state laws. Although PAK is an organization for providing training and support program for parents, PAK invites parents, professionals and community members who are interested in improving their knowledge about special education advocacy. PAK meetings will be led by parent advocates who have considerable experience with the special education process with presentations by attorneys, special education advocates, and other professionals.

  • What: All Montana students require equitable access to a variety of resources, encompassing the breadth of human conversations and creations for academic achievement and personal growth.  By learning to access and evaluate information they gain an appreciation and respect for diverse ideas and creative expressions.  By using information literacy skills in all aspects of learning, students become empowered and engaged lifelong learners. To thrive in the 21st Century, students must employ a process of inquiry that can be adapted to any information need.  By learning strategies to manage and ethically use information, Montana students open the door to the world in all its diversity. Teacher librarians, in collaboration with other classroom and content area teachers, empower all students to become information literate. The Library-Information Literacy and Technology (LILT) will assist the state's school districts in meeting the Montana LILT standards by providing training to Montana educators.     The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is holding a series of Affordable Care Act implementation forums throughout the country. We encourage you all to attend these broad policy-focused meetings, as they present a valuable opportunity to insert the consumer voice into the implementation process. Although registration for the Washington, DC session has been closed due to space constraints, it will also be webcast.

    HHS will use these forums to provide information to stakeholders on the Affordable Care Act implementation process. Additionally, they have promised ample time for Q&A, making these events a great opportunity to talk to key federal officials about pressing issues, such as: How you would like to see open exchange policy decisions decided, either for Federally Facilitated and Partnership exchanges, or for unresolved state exchange issues that require federal guidance.     Accessible Instructional Materials (AIM) provide the same content as traditional classroom materials such as textbooks, but deliver the information in a way that students with print-based disabilities can use more easily. Parents, family members, Parent Center staff, and others are invited to attend this webinar to learn about a 4-step process that can be used to determine whether a child with a disability needs AIM and how to work with the school to access them. Presenters from the National Center on Accessible Instructional Materials at CAST and PACER Center will use scenarios of children with different types of disabilities to provide examples of how the AIM decision making process works.
