What:
Aurasma is a new free app on the scene for both IOS and Android. It is similar to using QR codes, but without the need to print out or stick a code onto a page. Instead, it uses the image of the page as the "trigger" to play a video, display text, play a sound, etc. when the page or image is viewed using the app, through your device's camera. This session will demonstrate how to use Aurasma, the differences between using it and QR codes to adapt materials, ideas for use and requirements for use.

What:

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a professional advocate? What kind of training is needed? How do I attract clients? What do I do after I'm hired? What about billing? And how do I avoid burn-out? This session provides a starting point to answer these questions. Many parents, therapists, retired school district staff, and others routinely ask me how to become a professional advocate. Of course, there is no One Right Way to do this, no certification, no road map. . . and so the goal is to help participants consider the next steps, to provide them with some information about what has worked for some professional advocates, and to connect them with resources. This presentation will cover the following issues, among others: role of the advocate, sources/types of training, work environments, attracting clients, advocate's intake and next steps, maintaining records and confidentiality, billing, pro bono work, the importance of boundaries, and networking resources. The presentation will also reference COPAA's Voluntary Code of Ethics for advocates.

The first presentation will feature Nic Dibble from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction who will share how Wisconsin is building on existing mental health initiatives to use a Response to Intervention (RtI) framework to help schools support students affected by trauma. Resources that will be shared include Wisconsin's toolkit for schools, links to publications and websites that describe how schools can become more trauma-informed, and specific strategies schools can adopt to be more trauma-sensitive. The second presentation will feature Erin Butts from the University of Montana Institute for Educational Research and Service who will discuss secondary traumatic stress (STS), burnout, and self-care. She will identify STS signs and symptoms, discuss their significance, and provide recommendations for self-care. Her presentation will include an interactive exercise that can be used during stressful situations.

About 10 percent of kids in school--approximately 9-13 million students--struggle with mental health problems. Whether they're running out of a class, not doing their homework, disrupting others, or quietly being defiant, their behavior is often misread and misdiagnosed. The frustration level teachers face can be overwhelming, and traditional behavior approaches not only prove to be unhelpful but can even exacerbate a student's behavior. Jessica Minahan will provide empathetic, flexible, practical, and more importantly, effective strategies for preventing inappropriate behavior from the start in the classroom, and dealing with it once it's already happening.
