    It is well known among secondary teachers that an increasing number of students are ill equipped to read and comprehend the textbooks designed for proficient secondary readers.  Reading instruction is a responsibility shared by all teachers, regardless of level or content. Educators who accept this idea are already a step ahead - but for secondary teachers who may have never had the opportunity to learn how to teach basic reading strategies, the task is daunting.  This session will examine Before, During, and After reading strategies that can be applied in all content area classrooms and support increased comprehension of the text. When all subject area teachers have students use common strategies, it leads to greater independence, more responsibility in the learning, and increased student outcomes for all students.

    Teasing, taunting, bullying, harassment, and physical aggression are pervasive problems with children and adolescents across the country and in our communities today. To address these problems, schools need comprehensive, evidence-based, and ecologically-sound assessment to intervention approaches at the primary (e.g., whole school or school linked to community), secondary (e.g., early intervention groups for potential or "early-indication" bullies or victims), and tertiary (e.g., direct services for existing bullies) levels of prevention. This webinar will present strategies at each of these intervention levels using Project ACHIEVE's "Special Situation Analysis" approach. More specifically, the webinar will discuss ways to leverage social skills training, peer-mediated approaches, school-wide accountability systems, school safety systems, and home-school collaboration such that teasing, taunting, bullying, harassment, and physical aggression is either prevented or addressed. Especially emphasized will be the importance of differentiating approaches to address the bullies, victims, and bystanders who are involved in these inappropriate interactions.     When upper elementary or secondary students fail written assessments, teachers often assume it's because they lack specific content knowledge. But what if it's simply because they cannot read the multisyllabic words? All reading consists of three components: word identification, vocabulary, and comprehension. Word identification is often overlooked and can be the root of students' failure. Hear about new evidence-based data on prefixes, suffixes, and Greek roots occurring most often in content-area words that supports a shared responsibility for strengthening students' literacy skills. Discover quick, formative assessments for upper elementary and secondary teachers that measure students' ability to use knowledge of syllable types, syllable division patterns, and common morphemes (e.g., prefixes, suffixes, Greek roots) to decode multisyllabic words. The CORE Teaching Reading Sourcebook, a comprehensive resource in teaching research based reading instruction, is used during the session as a resource in helping teachers improve instruction in multisyllabic word instruction.

EIPA 2012-2013 Video Conference Series DVD's - 0 views

    What:
    The Montana Office of Public Instruction is happy to announce that a series of DVD Video Conferences and other interpreter training materials from Boys Town and Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) are now available to be checked-out by interpreters, teachers of the deaf and other people with interest in the education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

    How to borrow the DVDs:
    The OPI library loans materials to other libraries and not to individual borrowers. To borrow the DVDs, please contact your local school or public library to request any of the titles below. The EIPA Video Conference series will be circulated as a set (4 DVDs) for each year. The interpreting series (2 DVDs) will be cataloged as elementary and secondary. Because OPI will be granting renewal credits and needs verification of circulation, the Resource Center will send a letter on OPI letterhead to the borrowing library with the DVD(s) verifying the DVD title(s) was checked out. The borrowing library will fill in the patron's name and give the letter to the patron with the loaned DVD(s). It will be the patron's responsibility to present the letter to OPI for Renewal Units (CEUs). The videos will be loaned on a "first-come, first-served" basis for a period of 2 weeks. Renewals after the two-week period will be granted if there is no waiting list.

Implementing Secondary Transition Assessments: Case Study Group - Billings - Nov. 15, 2010 - 0 views

  • Region III CSPD, in cooperation with OPI, is offering a hands-on training for special education teachers working with students ages 15 and older. Participants will have an opportunity to network with other special education teachers and share ideas and discuss best practices. Participants are required to bring two or three student files which they will work on during the session. Teachers participating in this training are required to watch the four OPI Secondary Transition webinars located on the OPI website prior to attending the Implementing Secondary Transition: Case Study Group. Participants are required to complete a brief evaluation to document attendance and participation for each webinar.

Secondary Transition Para-Academy - Billings/Missoula - Jan. 11-12, 2011 / Feb. 10-11, ... - 0 views

  • The Division of Special Education and the Comprehensive System of Personnel Development (CSPD) are offering a new para-educator academy on Secondary Transition. Two in-person workshops will occur this year.  In addition, there will be a follow-up webinar.  Secondary transition education settings require that the para-educators assist the certified teacher with a number of instructional and employment-related activities such as: implementing school and community-based instruction; implementing employment sampling and job trainings programs; and monitoring and collecting instructional data. This transition academy is designed to provide participants with the tools to effectively work as a member of a team in a transition setting. After he retired, the Montana Office of Public Instruction asked him to participate in a variety of projects such as the Montana Behavioral Initiative. Margaret Tryon has been a special education teacher for 17 years, special education director 15 years, and school psychologist 9 years. Transition from High School - Webinar - Multiple Dates - 0 views

  • The OPI-Division of Special Education will be offering a series of 5 webinars on secondary transition.  Providing great secondary transition services to high school youth can be challenging.  This webinar series, presented by Montana teachers and providers, will give multiple strategies on implementing secondary transition in a rural district or a large district that has provided great results for the Montana school districts that have used them.  A flyer with descriptions of each of the webinars can be found at: http://www.opi.mt.gov/pdf/SpecED/Link/10NovWebinarBestPractices.pdf The webinars are free and no registration is required.     The first presentation will feature Nic Dibble from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction who will share how Wisconsin is building on existing mental health initiatives to use a Response to Intervention (RtI) framework to help schools support students affected by trauma. Resources that will be shared include Wisconsin's toolkit for schools, links to publications and websites that describe how schools can become more trauma-informed, and specific strategies schools can adopt to be more trauma-sensitive. The second presentation will feature Erin Butts from the University of Montana Institute for Educational Research and Service who will discuss secondary traumatic stress (STS), burnout, and self-care. She will identify STS signs and symptoms, discuss their significance, and provide recommendations for self-care. Her presentation will include an interactive exercise that can be used during stressful situations.

    The ADA National Network Audio Conference is being offered in collaboration with the Inclusive Fitness Coalition in response to the recent guidance provided by the Office for Civil Rights clarifying public elementary and secondary schools obligations under the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 to provide extracurricular athletic opportunities for students with disabilities. This session will discuss key points that are addressed in this new resource. The session will provide attendees with practical advice on how schools can better integrate students with disabilities into mainstream athletic programs and as well as how to create adapted programs. The goal of this session is to raise awareness of the obligation to provide opportunities in athletics and to encourage change at the school level.
