    Research shows that individuals who develop strong vocabulary skills are very successful in life. Being able to understand words and phrases to expand knowledge and build linguistic competence is an essential skill for every learner. Moreover, improving vocabulary is imperative for students with special needs. Building vocabulary requires practice and repetition. How can we make such a task more engaging, effective, interactive, and enjoyable? BY USING GAMES. In this session we will explore numerous vocabulary activities that are built in "game type" formats. Participants will learn how to create different activities using apps, web-based tools, and various software applications. We will also discuss how to use such resources in the classroom. In addition, participants will receive templates to build their own vocabulary games.

  • What: Do you need to know more about how to promote successful outcomes for your students in the area of math skills? Come to the MASP Summer Institute to discover how to apply recent research findings in your classroom. Learn the essentials of math preparation that we now know underlie proficiency in mathematics, including the importance of effective instruction. Find out the implications for identifying mathematics disabilities and for planning intervention. This is an important conference because there is a great deal of new evidence about how to foster the acquisition of good math skills, information that is not widely known yet. This will be one of the first opportunities that most people in our audience will have to learn about current knowledge on how children learn mathematics and how that learning can go wrong. Presenter One of the world's leading authorities on how children develop understanding of mathematics, Michèle M.M. Mazzocco is a professor at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She is the principal investigator for the Math Skills Development Project at the Kennedy Krieger School. With Daniel B. Berch, she is the co-editor of Why Is Math So Hard for Some Children?: The Nature and Origins of Mathematical Learning Difficulties and Disabilities, a respected book that provides, in the words of one fan, "an exceptional review of literature on LD in maths." Dr. Mazzocco initiated the Math Skills Development Project in 1997, through which she has followed a group of students from kindergarten through 9th grade (so far!). This project involves an extensive study of normally developing children, children who have learning disability not associated with a genetic condition, and children who have genetic conditions that are known to contribute to math disability. The focus of the research is to seek an understanding of how cognitive, behavioral, and genetic factors contribute toward successful mathematics achievement. Dates and Times: June 12, 13, and 14, 2011 Registration opens at 5 o'clock on Sunday evening, June 12, 2011. The conference begins at 6:30 on Sunday evening and concludes for the evening at 9:30.     What:
    The purpose of Montana PAK is to develop a monthly forum for parents to collaborate and receive information about special education advocacy and the federal/state laws that protect their children. In addition, PAK aims to provide a public medium to discuss educational concerns and to raise awareness about the scope of services, as well as local resources, which are available for children. One of those services is an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). An IEP is meant to be a collaborative process between parents, teachers, officials of the school system, and sometimes others who have expertise in the nature of a child's disability or provision of particular services. Parents are often overwhelmed by the special education process as they seek to improve their child's programming during IEP meetings. As an essential member of the IEP team, parents must have an understanding of the legal requirements which guide a school district's practices. Parents can improve their advocacy skills by obtaining a solid understanding of their child's legal rights under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504), the American with Disabilities Act (ADA), and state laws. Although PAK is an organization for providing training and support program for parents, PAK invites parents, professionals and community members who are interested in improving their knowledge about special education advocacy. PAK meetings will be led by parent advocates who have considerable experience with the special education process with presentations by attorneys, special education advocates, and other professionals.

For transition-age youth with disabilities, issues surrounding managing Personal Assistance Services (PAS) can be intensified by normal developmental concerns such as striking out on your own and navigating the road into adulthood.  Accessing and maintaining long-term supports, such as PAS, has often been a significant barrier to employment youth and adults with disabilities. This new guide assists youth in strengthening some of the most fundamental skills essential for successfully managing their own PAS: effective communication, time-management, working with others, and establishing professional relationships.  Such skills are key to not only enhancing independence, but also thriving in the workplace and growing professionally.
