    Thankfully, Caleb Trujillo over at Molecular Life Sciences has created this handy infographic, that lists the top five misconceptions about evolution, and explains (with diagrams!) why they're wrong. And it's designed to be shared - as Trujillo explained over at Version 1.0 of the infographic: "From my experience, most people who misunderstand evolution are actually misinformed about what science is and how it operates."

    The theory of evolution by natural selection is simple, elegant, and profound. Yet, a large number of undergraduate students including biology majors, medical students, and pre-service science teachers maintain a large set of misconceptions that interfere with a solid understanding of the process of natural selection. It is also well known that lecturing is an insufficient strategy to help students confront and correct these misconceptions. This activity uses the evolution of coat color in oldfield mice (Peromyscus polionotus) as the basis of a case study in which students investigate the role of variation, heritability, and selection in the evolution of a trait. Students examine graphs, data, and excerpts from a series of papers that have been published about this system over the last 100 years. The content is delivered as an interrupted case and encourages peer-to-peer teaching and interaction. The case is appropriate for use in non-major, introductory, or advanced biology courses.

    In the wake of a potential global crisis we will investigate the biology of infectious diseases to better understand how they transmit, replicate and induce an immune response in humans. Our objective is to pose solutions to the Ebola outbreak in the United States by studying other infectious diseases. We will investigate infectious diseases and the development of vaccines to show how they have changed the course of human health and populations as a whole. We will determine public perceptions about infectious diseases and identify misconceptions. Ultimately, we will develop community awareness information to manage and in future prevent an outbreak of Ebola.

    Human populations have adapted to varying intensities of sunlight with varying tones of skin coloration. The balanced interplay between melanin content and UV absorption allowed populations to successfully migrate from sub-Saharan Africa by influencing levels of two key vitamins: vitamin D and folic acid. This case study explores the evolutionary advantage of different skin tones for the human race; it also emphasizes the absence of scientific evidence for the correlation of abilities, talents, and other complex traits to skin color, and exposes certain social misconceptions linking skin color to specific traits. Although the discussion of race is not always a comfortable fit for science and biology courses, this case study uses the topic as an inherently interesting and important subject for applying basic biological concepts of DNA, the central dogma, and mutations to real world questions of physical difference and skin color. This case has been used in biology courses for non-science majors but would also be appropriate for advanced high school students.

    A common misconception is that Darwin suggested that something as complex as the eye could not have evolved through natural selection. While the misunderstanding often comes from an incomplete reading of his argument, we have long known that intermediate varieties of eyes (e.g., eyespots, cupped eyes, and complex camera-type eyes) exist in a variety of organisms. Eyes are so common that it was thought that they had evolved independently 40-60 times. More recent molecular work, however, has identified the role of Pax6 genes and their homologs in the formation of eyes during development. The basic information for eye formation appears to have been present in the common ancestor to all bilaterans, and perhaps may be more ancient than that. This interrupted case study examines the history of evidence for eye evolution from Darwin's initial postulates, through evidence of multiple intermediate forms, concluding in an examination of Pax6 homologs. The case is primarily for an introductory biology class but an additional section would be appropriate for upper-level evolution or developmental biology courses.
