Professor Carr explains how the open web we know is just one of many attempts over the last century to build a planet-wide network of information. Why was this one successful? And will it continue to be so? Professor Leslie Carr is a Director of the Web Science Institute at the University of Southampton where he researches the impact of network technologies on our lives and economy, and in particular on the research and knowledge industries. Different parts of society have different objectives and hence incompatible Web requirements, e.g. openness, security, transparency, privacy."

    Thanks to Google Maps Mania I learned about another new tool for creating mapped stories. Heganoo is a tool that allows you to build multimedia placemarks on a map. Your completed map can be displayed in a variety of formats including a slide-by-slide format that allows viewers to see placemark information as slides while viewing the map in the background.

    Thanks for sharing. I like the slideshare website; it was fun to just click through some nicely presented information. I am getting a bit confused with all the core reading and additional reading (!right?) and all the activities and whatnot so this was a good way to end my 1hour scheduled time today for this MOOC. I especially liked the hierarchy vs wirearchy slide. :) Peace.

Twitter feed mined content. Is this IP theft or something that is totally ok to do? - 1 views

    A book containing the twitter statuses of people supposedly working on a novel is presented in this link. I am wondering if this is theft of intelectual property. While writing tweets may be public domain knowledge, making money by copying the exact phrasing into a work of your own seems like plagiarism. What are your takes on this?

    A good example for module 4. I guess, as long as the 2nd creator made a permission to use those tweets before publishing it into book. But that person should also exercise the intellectual property guidelines or norms before anything else.

    Great concept! This goes to show that Open Knowledge does not equate to free and giveaway. I love the blend of effectively using a crowd-funding model through libraries to ensure appropriate fees are paid to cover costs and compensate authors and publishers to enable open access under a CC license across a global library network. It would be interesting to see the follow up to this. I would think this approach would be useful for school libraries in a district or region to use this approach and effectively share the resources.

    Interesting take on what will happen to the future of libraries and how information will be published and sold. It's important to realize that nothing comes free and that we should promote a business model that benefits content-producers as well as consumers.

A view from Canada on open educational resources (OER) - 0 views

    I've been employing Mr Google to try to help me determine how much OER might be used in post-secondary institutions in Canada and came across this document, which I think might be a slide deck turned into a PDF and without the accompanying script it's a little cryptic. The title is misleading, as it's the view from Western Canada, BC in particular. Most of the main OER initiatives I've been hearing about are in the west, I posted links to the BC Open Textbook initiative and to a particular text previously. This particular document
