Se trata de un Manual en el que se presentan los aspectos que hay que tener en cuenta para escribir y publicar artículos científicos con calidad suficiente para que sean aceptados en revistas de impacto elevado. Puede resultar de gran interés para jóvenes investigadores y para todos aquellos que deseen conocer más a fondo el mundo de la publicación científica Entre otros, se tratan los siguientes temas: - Tipos de publicaciones: ponencias, posters, informes y patentes. - Publicación en revistas científicas: identificación de las revistas, criterios de calidad de las revistas tanto internacionales (factor de impacto JCR, SJR, etc.) como nacionales (INREC's, DICE, CIRC…) - Preparación del manuscrito. Recomendaciones sobre la redacción del título, la forma del nombre del autor, la elaboración del resumen, palabras clave, referencias bibliográficas, partes del artículo, redacción del texto, uso de ilustraciones, tablas, gráficos, etc. - Ética de la publicación científica para autores, editores y evaluadores. Conflictos de intereses, detección de plagio. Organismos que velan por la ética en las publicaciones. - Como seleccionar la revista a la que enviar el artículo - Publicar en acceso abierto: El open access y la calidad, editoriales OA, repositorios temáticos e institucionales - Promoción del artículo y marketing profesional. This is my favorite article and it shows that old fashion publisher represent a barrier for knowledge flow, and they were misusing it. "Introduction:There is concern within democratic societies that a growing number of individuals are disconnecting from their role as citizens (Merritt and McCombs 2004: 47, Turner, G., 2005: 135, Dyrenfurth, N., 2005). Much of the blame for this disengagement has fallen upon the gatekeeping practices of journalism (Schechter, D., 2005: 70). These practices are often held to be counterproductive to journalism's primary purpose, which is to create an inclusive and diverse space for conversation between members of society about issues affecting their lives. Gatekeeping practices have the capacity to create gaps and silences, giving voice only to those already holding power. They give media corporations, politicians and large lobby groups the capacity to set the agenda on their terms and in their own best interests (Schechter, D., 2005: 70). "

After watching the Willinsky video, this hit home even more. I think the value of quality education is extremely important, and creating a "global village" of learning is still in its growing pains. Having a face-to-face instructor/professor/facilitator lets you ask the questions that pop to mind and being in a classroom setting allows an idea to flow and develop into other ideas. There are a lot of social media tools that are familiar to a lot of students living in a Western culture, but those social tools are not always available to developing countries; many do not have access to schools or even have a computer - as this article indicates, MOOCs are certainly a venue that opens learning opportunities for those who do not have access to learning in a formal environment, but may have access to the internet. What I particularly found interesting were the various MOOC categories - Gateway: MOOCs for prepping to get into higher learning; Research showcase: promote an institute's research areas; Professional skills: MOOCs for those who need to "upskill" or specialize…and there are others. The main reason for taking this course was to improve my knowledge of what social media is out there (MOOCs are part of it), how it is being used, and how useful is this "new" media is within the publishing realm. It is a challenge.

This weeks module 6 is about Open Science and Open Data. Within the course provided videos and readings do not provide much on Open Data. Open data leads to better science, but a community effort is needed in order to overcoming the barriers to widespread publication and availability of open scientific data.

Open source software also demonstrates how prices fall for consumers in a free and competitive market. Niche markets develop that serve as means of income for developers and programmers. The availability of free distributions serves as advertising for these specialists.

This is an eassy way to undestand what informactio literacy means.

The predatory journal example

In other circumstances it would be a good joke, but in science publishing context very, very sad.

I think this is hilarious but the language is unnecessary.

This video did a great job of illustrating the shift from critical media consumption to more participatory culture. We are no longer just consumers, we are now producers, curators and publishers. We must develop critical digital literacy skills in order to creatively express ourselves online.

I found this article interesting to me as it is some how relevant to digital identity and social media. This is an article from magazine The Atlantic that being published on May 2012, by Stephen Marche. At the beginning of the article Marche represents that over-reliance on social networking has turned people isolated by telling a true story about the Playboy Playmate Vickers's mummified body was found a year after she died and in the months before her death, she had not made any calls to her friends or family but kept in touch with the fans from internet sites. Along with the article, Marche represents that social media such as Facebook have made people networked easier than ever, but at the same time it is also making more and more people lonely. Also, Marche has exemplified a social condition, anomie, which is described as a lack of social norms characterized by breakdown of social bonds. Thus this article has provided relevant resource about anomie which has become part of deterioration to interpersonal relationship with social networking.

Under the new system, planned as a one-year trial, subscribers such as universities and researchers will be able to share a link to a read-only version of a Nature paper with anyone."

This is a great idea - hope to see more follow this model. Ideally, it would be nice to see it open a bit further (to lay persons), but this is a positive move.

In this article, Newman states that smartphones are prominent on campus nowadays. According to the survey that he has mentioned in the article, there are 59% of Tam students own smartphones; and 61% of them think that smartphones do waste their time even though there are 81% of them think that smartphones have made their life easier. Thus is, although most of the smartphone users believe that smartphones do bring them lots of convenience in life, most of them also agrees that smartphone are wasting their time in life especially in users always spend too much time on the smartphone apps and some of them think that smartphones have put a hindrance to human communication as it mentions in the article that "smartphones put a wall between people and the emotions they have". I feel like using smartphone is kinda of a trend in university right now. People can use their phone to search, download and read articles through the phone. Finding a balance with yourself and technoloy is important, however finding a balance for the publisher and technology is also important as knowledge has been quite open access to people on the internet right now.
