Local Contexts - 3 views

  •
Local Contexts is a new forum for applying Traditional Knowledge licenses or labels to materials from Indigenous communities. They work a lot like Creative Commons licenses. There are often different categories of Indigenous knowledge meant only for the community, or only for women, or only for leaders, and these licenses offer a way to label materials accordingly. These labels and licenses are added onto existing copyright, which is often held by the person who made a tangible material rather than the community where the idea comes from (an anthropologist who filmed a traditional ceremony owns the copyright on the film, and the community has no copyright). These TK labels are asking people who come across materials like this to think about how they are using the materials, and to think about whose intellectual property they are. This is a very new initiative, but a really valuable tool. This is part of a different conversation that challenges how we normally talk about copyright and intellectual property.

True cost of science publishing - 2 views

  •
This is an interesting article about the cost of formal publishing verses open access publishing. Although there seems to be a lot of secrecy around the issue, the research shows that the total cost for open access publishing is a lot less than formal publishing. That appears to bring the perception that the open access works are not as good as those published in formal journals. Despite this factor there is growing encouragement to authors to publish their work in open access sources, but traditional models remain very popular. A large percentage of these journals actually allow people to publish online, although some do ask for a time delay. Despite that, many authors do not proceed to publish online after they have gone through the formal process although some authors are obliged to do so by their institution. It could be a good test to see why these authors do not take the step to publish online. Reasons could range from apathy, to not enough knowledge of the process, to a need not to share the information with everyone. Economically, there is also a concern that open access sources will become more expensive as more authors begin publishing in this way.

COPY-ME Web Series - 0 views

"Copy-me is an animated web series about the sharing of knowledge and open culture. About laws, myths and misconceptions, about the Internet and all the benefits of sharing." The idea was artistically and satirically presented using animation series for better understanding and appreciation of the audience.

Top three reasons we choose illegal downloads - 8 views

This site explains why people choose to illegally downloads, even if some people know that they are breaking the copyright law.

very interesting and I agree with the responses.

Interesting share! Thank you. I didn't realize that illegal downloads also largely and universally happen in North America before I read this article. Since I grew up in China, and now I've been living in Canada for three years. I know that illegal downloading is quite common in China as there are a large number of websites are providing free access to TV shows, movies, and even American dramas movies musics, and I believe they never paid for them. They are distributing them and selling ads to make profit which is illegal. I though this is not common in Canada and America because some of my Canadian friend told me they are used to buying music from iTunes and they were surprised when I show them all the musics they like can be free downloaded from a Chinese App. However now i can see that this also largely happens in North America. I think the article is good in showing why people choose to illegally downloads, and it's quite interesting. But I think it's also worthy to research on what they are doing with those illegally downloaded stuffs. For example, somebody are just downloading for themselves and some people are actually downloading for sharing it, or even selling it, which is definitely illegal.

I agree with resualts of online survey

Interesting read as I'm guilty of illegally downloading/streaming TV and music. Very surprised to see that the rich are the ones who illegally download on a regular basis.
  •
"I'd have to wait too long to see it on TV" is the reason I hear the most about when it comes to illegal downloading. Those people generally do make an effort to watch it when it does officially come out on TV though, to off-set their piracy. The way companies will show something in one country and then sit on it for five months before letting someone in another country watch it seems silly to me at this point, though. Yes digital piracy is illegal, but it seems to be getting to the point of the Prohibition Era in the United States: yes, it's illegal, but everyone's doing it anyway. I think somebody's going to need to change things up here, and it seems doubtful that the companies producing these shows can alter the cultural norms without a lot more work than it seems they're willing to put in.

There has been a recent surge of interest in open source software development, which involves developers at many different locations and organizations sharing code to develop and refine programs. To an economist, the behavior of individual programmers and commercial companies engaged in open source projects is initially startling.

A qualified make-up artist and hair consultant and now studying the performing arts, the 14-year-old Cape Town teen tells Nelia Vivier about stepping up to today's job market and life in future.. "The educational system today only values one type of intelligence - if you do not fit into that mold, you are made to feel unhappy and stupid" "Schools and schooling ar becoming increasingly irrelevant to the great enterprises of the planet. No-one believes anymore that scientists are trained in science classes, or politicians in civic classes, or poets in English classes - John Gatto"."Our school crisis is a reflection of the greater social crisis (in South Africa) - children and old people are penned up and locked away to a dgree without precendent... a community that has no future, no past, only a continuous present". "We live in networks, not communities and everyone I know is lonely...school is a major actor in this tragedy....We appear to be creating a caste system, complete with untouchables who wander..."

Nice find! It has some great examples of American copyright laws and is historically grounded. It's always easier to understand when fun/relevant examples are used (like Rod Stewart's head, in this article!).

Houston, We Have A Public Domain Problem - 5 views

Case study of a copyright take down notice and discussion of copyright and public domain issues.
  •
This is a really excellent article! Access to the public domain and to the things that are in it (or should be, but never are) is at the root of my interest in copyright. I do wish there was more information about how we can fight back, if that's even possible. (I also appreciate the link to the Public Domain review in the article, and that the Public Domain review has a Tumblr. Something to investigate for my final project!)

Curioso caso.

Property Rights for the Future - 1 views

Hi there, I have just find this excelente video about the future os property rihgts and think that may be interesting for you all. "Property Rights Development: Implications for Sustainability | PRESENTER: Brian Kelly, Graduate Student Fellow, MS Candidate in Community Development and Applied Economics | 4/20/12 Modern property rights assignments and regimes are ill-equipped to adapt to increased ecological scarcity, resulting in economically-inefficient outcomes and a systemic inability to enable the development of a green economy. This presentation will discuss how property rights emerge, the viability of rights for future generations, and the how the existence of environmental externalities necessitates the inevitable emergence of common property rights regimes, grounded in the empirical example of Vermont's groundwater". Yes, a very comprehensive resource on Intellectual property. Thanks for sharing. However, I always check to see when a website was last updated (often indicated at the bottom of a page). WIPO does have this here, but on searching the website under 2014, there updates as recent as October 2014.
  •
Agreed that this is a very useful site for intellectual property rights. However a word of caution - there are also differences in the way these rights are dealt with in individual countries, due to those county's laws.
  •
This site is very helpful in terms of resources, such as definitions of terms and seminars for learning how to apply IP

Thanks for sharing this information, it increases the understanding about Intellectual Property.
