Practical examples that point to the value of open reviews.

"The Scholarly Communication in Africa Programme (SCAP) was a three-year research and implementation initiative that took place between March 2010 and August 2013. Hosted by the University of Cape Town, the programme engaged the Universities of Botswana, Namibia and Mauritius in a process aimed at better understanding the dynamics around scholarly communication in the Southern African higher education environment and advancing the open access agenda for the purpose of increasing the visibility of African research. This work was made possible by a grant from the Canadian International Development Research Center (IDRC). This report synthesizes research and findings from the four institutional case studies conducted at the Universities of Botswana, Cape Town, Mauritius and Namibia. It provides an overview the scholarly communication activity systems at work in these four Southern African universities."

Thanks for this article. I think it gives a great overview of the current landscape of scholarly publishing in Africa, and concisely states the problems of visibilities (or the lack thereof).

Mahara is an open source ePortfolio and social networking web application. Hoy me gustaría haceros llegar una aplicación que utilizamos en la Universidad de Málaga para que los alumnos hagan los Portfolios relacionados con la asignatura que estén tratando, incluso permitiendo la relación entre contenidos de distintas asignaturas. Podéis ver la aplicación en la página web: https://mahara.org/ Mahara permite crear, controlar y desarrollar tu propio portfolio electrónico. Permite, asimismo, organizar las páginas que el alumno va creando, organizando su propio portafolio en páginas, permitiéndole crear las páginas que estime necesarias y adaptándolas al público que el alumno decida tener en cada página. En este sentido, le permite elegir qué elementos mostrar, cómo y cuando. Finalmente, y como algo muy positivo y dinámico, permite compartir con la red el contenido que hace el alumno, hacer amistades, participar en los grupos y, finalmente exportar todo el contenido en una página web que, posteriormente, puede ser compartida en Internet. Desde la Universidad de Málaga hacemos uso de esta herramienta y nos sirve como herramienta de evaluación de nuestros alumnos, donde vemos su capacidad de síntesis, comprensión y reflexión sobre las distintas materias que vamos tratando.

I was reading one of the week 12 additional resources, PKP School: Becoming a Reviewer http://pkpschool.sfu.ca/becoming-a-reviewer/ and came across the term Predatory Open Access Publishing. I guess no matter what, someone is going to try to make a buck. There is also a site that others have posted here, http://scholarlyoa.com/publishers/ that is where Beall's list is housed. Beall's list is a list of potential, possible, or probable predatory scholarly open-access publishers - a good place to check if you are thinking of writing or reviewing for a journal, if it's on the list do more digging and research on the journal itself before committing to anything. The journal names all sound pretty impressive so you can't tell by name alone.

With a corpus of open data, semantic search technologies can be employed to determine patterns in data that would take years for scientists to make. Publishing has transited from traditional to Electronic format making information resources available to users without much subscription. E-publishing is engendered by the introduction of information and communication technology (ICT), this development has brought about increase in the number of scholarly communication in circulation. The awareness and rate of e-publishing differs among faculties, it based on this that this study was carried out to survey the situation of e-publishing and open access of librarians in three federal universities in Southern Nigeria, five research questions were formulated to guide the study. The methodology adopted is descriptive survey, questionnaire was given to a total population of 64 librarians consisting of librarians from the institutions understudy, the data collected from the study shows that though librarians are aware of e-publishing but they have not being publishing as should have been expected in University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) out of the 95% that aware of electronic publishing only 30% have published there articles electronically, in University of Lagos (UNILAG) 100% indicated that they have published electronically while in University of Benin (UNIBEN) 45.4% percent indicated yes while 54.5% said they have not published their articles electronically. On availability of open access it was discovered that they have access as a total of 84% from UNN responded Yes, UNILAG 100% said Yes while in UNIBEN 90.9%. The following problems based on their scoring militating against e-publishing and open access in Nigeria. Inadequate power supply; inadequate computer terminals; inadequate funding for subscription payment.

Does anyone know about Global eJournals Library? It seems to be a subscription-based discovery service that indexes all of the open access or post-embargo journal articles it can find. The two private companies that operate this service, from the UK and India, are not very clear. It claims to have indexed many more articles (7 million) and journals than DOAJ (almost 2 million). I'm curious about the whole thing!

Free internet for Africa

The sooner Africa gets the internet the better. The cost of internet is too high and out of reach for many people. Free internet will facilitate access to information. I hope this will reach rural areas and maginalised communities.

yes, it is very good to get free internet for Africa so that knowledge dissipation happens and open knowledge can will be useful to all of them and also benefit from that OK. IT infrastructure and internet is required to benefit from open accessible open knowledge.

Open information allows better informed decisions.

Open culture in a different sense. Help in Pakistan offered to anyone, independent of culture, religion, gender or age. Crown funded. Even the poorest of the poor give. However, they tend not to accept donations from foreign agencies...
