This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages formative research, intervention development, and pilot-testing of interventions. Primary scientific areas of focus include the feasibility, tolerability, acceptability and safety of novel or adapted interventions that target HIV prevention or treatment. For the purposes of this FOA, "intervention" is defined to include behavioral, social, or structural approaches, as well as combination biomedical and behavioral, social, or structural approaches that prevent acquisition and transmission of HIV infection, or improve clinical outcomes for persons who are HIV infected, or both.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages implementation research projects designed in partnership with global and domestic service providers, to target the particular needs in the selected community, to achieve the 90/90/90 HIV prevention and treatment targets identified by HIV/AIDS global leadership. The targets for HIV testing are that 90% of all persons living with HIV know their status, for treatment initiation that 90% of those diagnosed receive timely and effective antiretroviral treatment (ART), and for optimal treatment and preventive benefit that 90% of those on treatment achieve sustained viral suppression. PA-18-279 uses the R01 grant mechanism while PA-18-280 uses the R21 mechanism. High risk/high payoff projects that lack preliminary data or utilize existing data may be most appropriate for the R21 mechanism, while applicants with preliminary data and/or include longitudinal analysis may wish to apply using the R01 mechanism.

The purpose of the NIH Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00) program is to increase and maintain a strong cohort of new and talented, NIH-supported, independent investigators. This program is designed to facilitate a timely transition of outstanding postdoctoral researchers with a research and/or clinical doctorate degree from mentored, postdoctoral research positions to independent, tenure-track or equivalent faculty positions. The program will provide independent NIH research support during this transition in order to help awardees to launch competitive, independent research careers. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is designed specifically for applicants proposing research that does not involve leading an independent clinical trial, a clinical trial feasibility study, or an ancillary study to a clinical trial. Applicants to this FOA are permitted to propose research experience in a clinical trial led by a mentor or co-mentor. Applicants proposing a clinical trial or an ancillary study to an ongoing clinical trial as lead investigator should apply to the companion FOA (PA-18-397).

The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH. The over-arching goal of this NICHD R25 program is to support educational activities that complement and/or enhance the training of a workforce to meet the nation's biomedical, behavioral and clinical research needs. To accomplish the stated over-arching goal, this FOA will support creative educational activities with a primary focus on Courses for Skills Development, which are encouraged to include hands-on research experiences. This FOA encourages applications to develop and conduct short-term research education programs to improve the knowledge and research skills of biomedical and behavioral scientists conducting research in areas relevant to the mission of NICHD, including reproductive, developmental, behavioral, social, and rehabilitative processes that determine the health and well-being of newborns, infants, children, adults, families, and populations.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to accelerate the discovery and development of medications to treat Cannabis Use Disorders (CUDs) using the UG3/UH3 mechanism. The objective is to advance medications toward the ultimate goal of obtaining FDA approval. Advances in understanding the cannabinoid systems and the effects of marijuana on the brain, coupled with the availability of both novel and marketed medications that may be efficacious to treat these disorders, offer unprecedented opportunities to develop safe and effective pharmacotherapies for CUDs. The compounds to be evaluated can be small molecules or biologics. They can be tested in pre-clinical models and/or for the clinical manifestations of CUDs or their consequences such as withdrawal, craving, or cannabis use relapse. Applications may focus on the development of new chemical entities, new formulations of marketed medications available for other indications, or combinations of medications that hold promise for the treatment of CUDs. The UG3/UH3 Phase Innovation Awards Cooperative Agreement involves 2 phases. The UG3 is to support a project with specific milestones to be accomplished by the end of the 2-year period. The UH3 is to provide funding for 3 years to a project that successfully completed the milestones set in the UG3. UG3 projects that have met their milestones will be administratively considered by NIDA and prioritized for transition to the UH3 phase. Investigators responding to this FOA must address both UG3 and UH3 phases.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages research project applications under the cooperative agreement (UG3/UH3) mechanism to address the development, optimization and validation of quantitative imaging (QI) software tools and methods for prediction and/or measurement of response to cancer therapies or for planning and validating radiation therapy treatment strategies in clinical trials. The scientific scope of this FOA includes: · Development and optimization of QI tools and/or methods for treatment planning, predicting or measuring response to therapy as open source tools that will translate into clinical trial decision support; · Validation of the optimized tools in clinical settings to demonstrate their value for decision support in ongoing single-site or multi-site clinical trials. A phased approach that emphasizes each of these activities must be proposed. Investigators must apply for both the UG3 and UH3 phases together in the single application. The UG3 effort is to be used for the development and optimization of QI tools and methods chosen for study by the investigating team, while the UH3 phase is for the validation of the tools/methods developed in the UG3 phase. The UG3 phase can be no more than 2 years in duration, and the total project cannot exceed 5 years. At completion, UG3 projects will be reviewed by program staff. Those that have met their milestones may be administratively considered by NCI program staff for transition to the UH3 validation phase.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to promote innovative research that addresses one or both of the following objectives: · Devise optimal strategies to improve the identification of persons unaware of their HIV-1 infection and successfully link them to HIV testing, treatment, and prevention interventions. · Develop and examine the feasibility and acceptability of novel integrated interventions of biomedical and behavioral strategies that substantially reduce the likelihood of onward HIV transmission in these populations.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to transition the core resources and biomedical research activities of Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) into independence and sustainability.

As part of the Collaborative Research on Addiction at NIH (CRAN) initiative, NIDA, NIAAA, and NCI join to issue this FOA. The purpose of this FOA is to support the development and testing of interventions, models, and/or frameworks that examine system-level implementation of evidence-based interventions, guidelines, or principles to improve the delivery, uptake, quality, and sustainability of substance use prevention and treatment interventions and services.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) will support innovative research projects that are focused on image-guided drug delivery (IGDD), including real-time image guidance, monitoring, quantitative in vivo characterizations and validation of delivery and response. It will support research in development of integrated imaging-based systems for delivery of drugs or biologics in cancer and other diseases, quantitative imaging assays of drug delivery, and early intervention.

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) of the NIH invites applications for renewal of eligible Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) grants. The objective of the COBRE initiative is to strengthen an institution's biomedical research infrastructure through the establishment of a thematic, multi-disciplinary center and to enhance the ability of investigators to compete independently for National Institutes of Health (NIH) individual research grants or other external peer-reviewed support. COBRE awards are supported through the Institutional Development Award (IDeA) Program, which aims to foster health-related research by increasing the competitiveness of investigators at institutions located in IDeA states.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support the development of infrastructure and other resources required for the conduct of Clinical and Translational Research (CTR) in IDeA-eligible states. IDeA-CTR Centers are expected to provide added value to the biomedical research efforts in the participating institutions through support of activities that cannot easily be provided through standard research grant awards. The proposed activities will provide the infrastructure and resources that will enhance the competitiveness of the investigators to obtain additional funding for clinical and translational research. Applicants must establish a statewide network of collaborating and partnering institutions/organizations. Other institutions/organizations outside the state may be included if forming a network of wider reach. Since only one award will be made per IDeA-eligible state, only one application should be submitted per state.

COBRE awards are supported through the IDeA Program, which aims to foster health-related research by increasing the competitiveness of investigators at institutions located in states with historically low aggregate success rates for grant awards from the NIH.

The Ohio Affiliate of  Prevent Blindness is accepting applications for its 2018 Young Investigator Student Fellowship Awards for Female Scholars in Vision Research. The Fellowship Program is designed to provide support for outstanding female scientists committed to pursuing biomedical, behavioral or clinical research careers relevant to the mission of Prevent Blindness - to prevent blindness and preserve sight.  Grants will be awarded for the summer 2018 session.  Awards will range from $3000-$5000 depending upon the availability of funds. The deadline for receipt of applications is Feb. 15, 2018. Applicants must be post-baccalaureate students enrolled in a master's or doctorate program during the summer of 2018, female, citizens or permanent residents of the United States, and conducting their research with a recognized academic institution in the State of Ohio. Applications from diverse fields in the health sciences including, but not limited to ophthalmology, optometry, nursing, genetics, public health, nutrition, gerontology, and bioengineering, are appropriate to the goals of this fellowship award. The Ohio Affiliate of Prevent Blindness encourages fellowship applications which investigate public health issues related to the burden of eye-related health and safety topics.

NASA's Human Research Program (HRP) has released solicited research response area NRA 80JSC017N0001-BPBA "Topics in Biological, Physiological, and Behavioral Adaptations to Spaceflight: Integrated One Year Mission Project and Other Opportunities" that solicits applied research in support of HRP goals and objectives. The first topic in the solicitation is for proposals in the area of Analyses of the Temporal Nature of Human Adaptation to Long-Duration Low-Earth Orbit Missions. HRP has a requirement for sufficient crewmember experience at one year in spaceflight to demonstrate the presence or absence of unacceptable deleterious physiological, psychological and medical effects of spaceflight on human health and performance beyond the experience base of six-month expeditions and to permit extrapolation to early interplanetary expeditions with durations of up to two to three years. Therefore, HRP is proposing an integrated One-Year Mission Project on the International Space Station (ISS) consisting of five one-year missions five standard-duration six-month missions paralleling the year-long expeditions, and five short-duration crew vehicle exchange expeditions lasting up to two months to occur at the mid-point of each 1YM. Proposals are solicited by NASA in the additional areas of Biological, Physiological, and Behavioral Functions of Mice during Partial (0 - 1) G-Exposures Provided by Centrifugation on the International Space Station; Novel Spaceflight-Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome Hypotheses and Countermeasures; Medical Countermeasures Targeting Multiple Tissues at Risk from Exposure to Space Radiation; Individual and Team Problem-Solving Skills Training for Exploration Missions; Sensory Stimulation for Cognitive and Behavioral Health; and Human Capabilities Assessments for Autonomous Missions (HCAAM) Virtual NASA Specialized Center of Research.

The Fund recognizes that young investigators may find it difficult to remain in pediatric research because of a lack of funding. Therefore, the purpose of this program is to encourage the development of medical research in child health by awarding small grants to new researchers, helping them gain a foothold in this important area. The goal is to fund applicants who will go on to be independent investigators. The Fund will make up to 30 awards total with two funding cycles (15 awards each). The Fund is open to a wide variety of research topics. We do not focus on a particular ​disease, but all our funded projects deal directly with children's health. In the Early Career Award Program, the Fund is particularly interested in applicants that show great potential to impact that field of children's health through medical research. Both an applicant's aptitude and inclination toward research are considered. The quality of the mentor and the mentoring relationship are also considered to be important predictors of success.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support studies that are essential, yet also sufficient, for investigators to make definitive decisions about the designs of important clinical trials within NHLBI's mission, the prevention and treatment of heart, lung, blood, and sleep disorders. This mechanism may be used to test the feasibility of novel and efficient (pragmatic) trial designs, as well as determine the feasibility of an intervention, intervention parameters, subject availability, or other information essential to complete the design of a trial. Applications should demonstrate that the proposed pilot studies are both necessary and sufficient to permit definitive decisions about the design of the subsequent clinical trial. Applicants who propose solely to write a protocol or manual of operations or to develop infrastructure for a clinical trial will not be considered appropriate for this announcement. The NHLBI anticipates that the R34 award period will yield robust investigator-initiated clinical trial grant applications for the evaluation of interventions for the treatment or prevention of heart, lung, blood, or sleep disorders.

The purpose of the NLA Junior Faculty Research is to encourage scholarly advancement of Junior Faculty in the pursuit of a career related to hyperlipidemia and other lipid disorders in humans. The NLA will fund eligible institutions to provide $70,000 per year in salary support for those actively involved in clinical and/or basic science that provides promise of developing new information in fields of study that could advance the diagnosis and management of lipid disorders such as biochemistry, physiology, or genetics as well as interventions that improve therapy. The institutions eligible shall be nonprofit and offer an environment that would logically support a young faculty member with appropriate equipment, space and experienced faculty for proposed studies. The proposal will identify a specific candidate with training and strong signs of early success in an appropriate area of research and with a plan for developing appropriate experiments or clinical studies. To be eligible, an applicant is expected to hold or be eligible for a doctoral level degree (PhD, PharmD or MD) prior to the date of the scheduled award. There must be a record of accomplishment in a relevant research area as manifest by publications or a PhD thesis of high quality. The application for the Basic Science Award may focus on any aspect of lipid metabolism that has relevance to human disease. This may include experiments at the laboratory bench involving structural chemistry, biochemistry, physiology or genetics.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support research that will identify changes in immune mechanisms and markers because of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb) exposure, infection or disease in pediatric populations exposed to or infected with HIV-1.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to solicit applications to continue the Cooperative Centers on Human Immunology (CCHI) program to support studies that will advance understanding of the mechanisms regulating human immune responses. The immediate objective of CCHI is to support mechanistic and hypothesis-testing studies to understand human immunity applicable to the biodefense effort; i.e. innate, adaptive and mucosal immune responses to infection, vaccination and adjuvants. Studies on immune-mediated diseases (e.g. airway allergy, food allergy, autoimmunity, organ transplant rejection) are also of interest, as these data will provide a more comprehensive understanding of the human immune system. The program will also support the centralized infrastructure needed to promote and coordinate multi-disciplinary research in human immunology. Additional objectives are to promote public access to CCHI-supported data and metadata through public portals such as ImmPort, and to develop new technologies to support human immunology research.
