Objective To help trainees initiate careers in cardiovascular and stroke research while obtaining significant research results under the supervision of a sponsor or mentor; supports individuals before they're ready for some stage of independent research. Science Focus Research broadly related to cardiovascular function and disease and stroke, or to related clinical, basic science, bioengineering or biotechnology, and public health problems, including multidisciplinary efforts.

It has been suggested that generic iron complex formulations could have higher levels of labile iron, leading to the formation of a greater amount of non-transferrin bound iron (NTBI) in vivo than the reference listed drug (RLD) that would potentiate oxidative stress and inflammation, then resulting in direct cellular damage. The objectives of this study are to evaluate various in-vitro methods of determining labile iron in the parenteral iron complex formulations and develop a bio-relevant in-vitro method to predict the amount of NTBI in vivo. Such a predictive in-vitro method will allow for linkage of FDA's equivalence standards to in vivo performance.

The FaceBase Consortium is developing a variety of comprehensive datasets on midfacial development that are available to the wider scientific community at www.facebase.org. This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) will support meritorious research projects that conduct secondary data analyses of these FaceBase datasets relevant to craniofacial development, human craniofacial conditions or traits, and animal models of those craniofacial conditions. Informatics projects that integrate data from multiple FaceBase datasets are especially encouraged.

This Developmental Research Funding Opportunity intends to support gene function studies in collaboration with the Undiagnosed Diseases Network (UDN) building upon the NIH Intramural Research Programs Undiagnosed Diseases Program (NIH-UDP). Responsive applications will propose to investigate the underlying genetics, biochemistry and/or pathophysiology of newly diagnosed diseases in association with the respective gene variant(s) identified through the UDN. In recent years, gene function studies combined with genetic and genomic analyses and metabolic studies have greatly improved diagnoses of these very rare diseases and advanced scientific knowledge of the underlying pathogenesis. This initiative is funded through the NIH Common Fund, which supports cross-cutting programs that are expected to have exceptionally high impact.

The BioWatch Program is a cornerstone of the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) comprehensive strategy for countering biological terrorism. The BioWatch Program is an early warning system that is designed to detect the intentional release of select aerosolized biological agents. The BioWatch Program's mission is to provide and maintain a continuous bio-terrorism air monitoring system in metropolitan areas and coordinate with state and local public health communities to prepare for and respond to a bioterrorist event. This mission is accomplished by serving as an early warning system which enhances the security of jurisdictions by providing the needed time to execute their comprehensive concept of operations plans to counter biological terrorism. The Biowatch Program is a critical part of an ongoing national effort to build and sustain preparedness which helps the United States to maintain momentum through targeted jurisdictional planning that highlights preventative actions necessary to allow for a proper and timely response and begin the process to recovery from a biological agent release.

This NASA Research Announcement (NRA) solicits proposals for supporting basic and applied research and technology across a broad range of Earth and space science program elements relevant to one or more of the following NASA Research Programs: Earth Science, Heliophysics, Planetary Science, and Astrophysics. The Melanoma Research Foundation is accepting applications from emerging and established scientific investigators for research projects that explore new avenues in melanoma biology, prevention and treatments, with the goal of finding a cure. The foundation makes grants in four areas: Career Development Awards, Established Investigator Awards, Career Investigator CURE OM Awards, and Established Investigator CURE OM Awards. Career Development Awards provide funding of up to $50,000 a year for two years to junior investigators who are beginning a research career emphasizing melanoma-related projects and have not yet secured strong federal funding for their research. Established Investigator Awards provide funding of up to $100,000 a year for two years to established melanoma researchers or senior researchers working in closely related fields who wish to move into melanoma research. Career Development CURE OM Awards provide funding of up to $50,000 a year for two years to junior investigators in the ocular/uveal melanoma field. he NIDCR-funded FaceBase Consortium (www.facebase.org) was established in 2009 to advance craniofacial research by creating comprehensive datasets on craniofacial development and dysmorphologies and disseminating them to the wider craniofacial research community. Operationally, the Consortium links individual spoke projects, each creating and contributing comprehensive datasets, analytic tools, and other resources to a central data management and integration hub which, in turn, disseminates them publicly. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits grant applications for a new round of spoke projects that will comprise the Consortiums second iteration. New projects should be consistent with FaceBases overall goals of experimental data collection and annotation, data coordination, and integration. New projects should also be complementary to, rather than duplicative of, the types of data, analytic tools, and resources already available through FaceBase. The Consortium will continue to focus on normal craniofacial development and dysmorphology but this FOA is open to applications investigating parts of the skull beyond the midface and palate. High programmatic priority will be given to studies of facial, palatal, and cranial vault development and dysmorphology.

The Environmental Health and Safety of Nanotechnology (Nano EHS) program provides support to examine and mitigate the environmental effects of nanotechnologies. Fundamental research is sought to understand, evaluate, and lessen the impact of nanotechnology on the environment and biological systems. The program emphasizes engineering principles underlying the environmental health and safety impacts of nanotechnology. Innovative methods related to clean nanomaterials production processes, waste reduction, recycling, and industrial ecology of nanotechnology are also of interest.

The Thermal Transport Processes program supports engineering research aimed at gaining a basic understanding of the thermal transport phenomena at nano/micro and macro scales in (1) cooling and heating of equipment and devices, (2) energy conversion, power generation and thermal energy storage and conservation, (3) the synthesis and processing of materials including advanced manufacturing, (4) the propulsion of air and land-based vehicles, and (5) thermal phenomena in biological systems.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to encourage new research into integrative cancer biology by fostering collaborations between investigators currently supported through the Integrative Cancer Biology Program (ICBP) and those currently unaffiliated with the ICBP. These collaborative projects should leverage the existing expertise and resources from within the ICBP research community and combine those with new approaches, technologies or methods to address compelling cancer questions. Therefore, the proposed research projects must involve partnerships between investigators currently supported by ICBP and investigators currently unaffiliated with the program. Applications that focus on projects which neither involve integrative cancer biology research, nor expand individual ICBP investigators' research by adding additional expertise, resources, or approaches, or without affiliation to existing ICBP personnel, are not appropriate to this FOA.

The Navy Experimental Diving Unit (NEDU) is soliciting pre-proposals and proposals for applied Biomedical Research and Diving Equipment Development with a focus on Submarine Escape and Rescue, Diving Safety, and Diving Effectiveness.

The Fluid Dynamics program supports fundamental research and education on mechanisms and phenomena governing fluid flow. Proposed research should contribute to basic understanding; thus enabling the better design; predictability; efficiency; and control of systems that involve fluids. Encouraged are proposals that address innovative uses of fluids in materials development; manufacturing; biotechnology; nanotechnology; clinical diagnostics and drug delivery; sensor development and integration; energy and the environment. While the research should focus on fundamentals, a clear connection to potential application should be outlined.

The Particulate and Multiphase Processes program supports fundamental and applied research on phenomena governing particulate and multiphase processes, including flows of suspensions of particles, drops or bubbles, granular and granular-fluid flows, flow behavior of micro or nano-structured fluids, aerosol science and technology, and self- and directed-assembly processes involving particulates. Innovative research is sought that contributes to improving the basic understanding, design, predictability, efficiency, and control of particulate and multiphase processes with particular emphasis on: novel manufacturing techniques, multiphase systems of relevance to energy harvesting, multiphase transport in biological systems or biotechnology, and environmental sustainability.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications for target discovery and validation, lead discovery and optimization, preclinical and/or clinical development of safe and effective male contraceptive products.  This program aims to support a wide range of research, both basic and applied, with the goal of developing clinically useful male contraceptive products.  There is no safe, effective and reversible male contraceptive drug product in the market.  Thus, this program is critical in support of research with the goal of identifying male contraceptive targets and developing products to alleviate this problematic challenge.  

Grants of up to $1.62 million over five to seven years will be awarded to support investigators with an innovative basic, clinical, translational, epidemiological, or health services research initiative relevant to any diabetes type, diabetes-related disease state, or diabetes complication. The program seeks to bring new perspectives to diabetes research by offering three types of funding: support for the transition from trainee to independent investigator, support for early-career diabetes investigators, and support for established investigators new to diabetes research.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), issued by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), is to encourage research projects which focus on the interactions of carcinogenic pathogens with the human microbiome and the host for the detection of pathogen-induced cancer (DPIC). This FOA encourages research to assess molecular signatures associated with risk and early detection of pathogen-induced cancer and chronic inflammation associated with progression to invasive cancer.
