Combating Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria (CARB) Biopharmaceutical Accelerator - 0 views

    The current pipeline of candidate antimicrobial products is insufficient to counter the threat of antimicrobial resistance . A novel collaborative model is needed to spur innovation and investment towards new antimicrobial products to repopulate the early development pipeline. In 2014, the United States Government released the National Strategy for Combating Antimicrobial Resistant Bacteria. A component of the National Strategy is to establish a Biopharmaceutical Accelerator for Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria [Accelerator] to fund Research and Development (R&D) activities to help progress candidate products from the proof-of-concept stage through pre-clinical development. Candidates that graduate from the Accelerator will be better positioned for R&D investment and clinical development. There are various Accelerator models in the marketplace. The Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Accelerator will be a non-equity accelerator that provides non-dilutive funding to product developers for R&D activities and enables the product developers to retain full ownership and control of their company. The Accelerator for CARB will be focusing only on antibacterial products. BARDA will provide direct funding and NIAID will provide in-kind services (e.g. preclinical services, technical expertise) to the Accelerator [the cooperative agreement recipient] that will manage a portfolio of investments of early stage antimicrobial product candidates.

Molecular Atlas of Lung Development Program (LungMAP) Phase 2 - Human Tissue Core (U01-... - 0 views

    The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute invites cooperative agreement (U01) applications to serve as the Research Center (RC) for the Molecular Atlas of Lung Development Program (LungMAP), Phase 2. The overall objective of LungMAP is to better understand human lung development through building an open-access reference resource of a comprehensive, dynamic, 3-D molecular atlas of the late-stage developing human lung with data and reagents available to the research community. Phase 2 of LungMAP will continue to generate and integrate high-resolution, multiscale molecular profiles associated with spatial information to provide molecular characterizations of functionally and anatomically defined cell types in the developing human lung. Phase 2 of LungMAP will focus on human lung only and will extend the scope to cover normal lung development into early adulthood (up to 25 years old), as well as abnormal lung development in selected neonatal and pediatric rare lung diseases. The purpose of the LungMAP RCs will be to generate the molecular profiling data of the developing human lung. Applicants are not required to have been funded in Phase 1 (RFA-HL-14-008) in order to submit applications for Phase 2.

    The Therapeutic Idea Award is designed to promote new ideas aimed at drug, treatment, and target discovery that are still in the early stages of development.     In May of 2013 the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), with input from the National Institute on Aging (NIA), held an Alzheimer's Disease-Related Dementias Conference in response to the National Plan to Address Alzheimer's Disease. The Conference brought together national and international experts and members of the public to develop research priorities for accelerating the development of therapies for the Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (ADRDs). The ADRD 2013 research recommendations that resulted are part of the National Plan to Address Alzheimer's Disease. This FOA addresses the National Plan's highest priority for human-based research on vascular contributions to cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID): to develop noninvasive markers of key vascular processes related to VCID in Alzheimer's and related dementias. The research program initiated here underscores the need to facilitate the development of biomarkers to improve the efficiency and outcome of Phase II and III clinical trials and advance therapeutic development. These companion FOAs (RFA-NS-16-019, i.e. this FOA; and RFA-NS-16-020 for the Biomarkers Development Projects) establish the Small Vessel VCID Biomarkers Consortium, and are focused on small vessel (i.e. arterioles, capillaries, and venules) VCID in vascular cognitive impairment (VCI), vascular dementia, and all mixed and pure cognitive impairment and dementias with contributing small vessel vascular disease, including such as commonly occurs in sporadic Alzheimer's disease. Awards funded under these two FOAs create a consortium and infrastructure to complete development projects as well as planning that will enable follow-up activities (to be carried out under future separate funding; for example large scale multi-site validation studies and other activities, for future FDA qualification of small vessel VCID biomarkers and use in clinical trials).

    During the last nine years, the U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has worked with nations around the world to build capacity to prepare, detect, and respond to pandemics. Through previous funding opportunity announcements (FOA) and subsequent cooperative agreements, CDC and its international partners and national ministries of health focused on three pillars: 1) preparedness and communication; 2) surveillance and detection; 3) response and containment. The success of this developed capacity is evident across the globe. Through these cooperative agreements, CDC and partners have: Developed national government public-health pandemic preparedness plans Developed pandemic communication plans Improved laboratory capacity and infrastructure for influenza virologic surveillance Enhanced epidemiology capacity and infrastructure for disease surveillance Developed sentinel, hospital-based surveillance for severe acute respiratory illness (SARI) Enhanced integration of laboratory and epidemiologic surveillance for influenza Developed surveillance for cases and clusters of respiratory and febrile illnesses that could represent emerging new pandemics. Trained local rapid-response and containment teams. Developed infection control guidelines in public health-care settings for the prevention of avian and pandemic flu. It is critical that these new capacities be sustained and strengthened over time to ensure global capacity to detect and respond to pandemic influenza effectively.

    The NIH is interested in promoting a broad base of research and development of technologies in biomedical computing, informatics, and Big Data Science that will support rapid progress in areas of scientific opportunity in biomedical research. Field Initiated Projects Program: Minority-Serving Institution (MSI) - Development - 0 views

    The purpose of the Field Initiated (FI) Projects program is to develop methods, procedures, and rehabilitation technology that maximize the full inclusion and integration into society, employment, independent living, family support, and economic and social self-sufficiency of individuals with disabilities, especially individuals with the most severe disabilities. Another purpose of the FI Projects program is to improve the effectiveness of services authorized under the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended. The purpose of this MSI-FI competition is to improve the capacity of minority entities to engage in disability and rehabilitation research and development activities. NIDILRR will accomplish this by limiting eligibility for this completion to minority entities and Indian tribes in a manner consistent with Sections 21(b)(2)(A) of the Act, which authorizes NIDILRR to make awards to minority entities and Indian tribes to carry out activities authorized under Title II of the Act. NIDILRR is particularly interested in applications from individual minority entities that have historically been underrepresented in the Federally-sponsored research arena. In carrying out a development activity under a FI Projects development grant, a grantee must use knowledge and understanding gained from research to create materials, devices, systems, methods, measures, techniques, tools, protypes, processes, or intervention protocols that are beneficial to the target population. Please note that this will be the funding opportunity for FI development proposals for minority-serving institutions.
