The National Council on Disability (NCD) will seek proposals for a report series on bioethics and disability. The findings in these reports primarily serve to assist policymakers, including the White House and Congress, with the insight needed to make policy decisions designed to improve medical decision-making regarding persons with disabilities. The reports will also provide state legislatures, medical associations and educators, and persons with disabilities and those who support them, with an understanding of policy, legislation, and initiatives that impact their lives. The report series will examine policies and practices related to the availability of medical interventions and life-saving medical care for persons with disabilities. It will examine five specific areas where disability and bioethics intersect, with a focus on how a person's disability impacts medical decisions, including decisions to provide life-saving care.

NIDILRR proposes to fund two Disability and Rehabilitation Research Projects of three years each to conduct research on opioid use disorder among people with disabilities. Each grant will be funded up to $500,000. Topic of interest include: 1) Systematic review of existing literature on opioid-use disorder and people with disabilities; 2) Prevalence estimates and patterns of opioid use disorder treatment for people with disabilities; 3) Factors associated with increased risk for opioid use disorder; 4) Factors associated with improved access to treatment for opioid use disorder; 5) Interventions that contribute to improved outcomes; and 6) Effects of government policies and programs on access to treatment for people with disabilities who have opioid-use disorders.

TheDisability and Rehabilitation Engineeringprogram is part of the Engineering Biology and Health cluster, which also includes: 1) the Biophotonics program; 2) the Biosensing program; 3) the Cellular and Biochemical Engineering program; and 4) the Engineering of Biomedical Systems program. TheDisability andRehabilitation Engineeringprogram supports fundamental engineering research that will improve the quality of life of persons with disabilities through: development of new technologies, devices, or software; advancement of knowledge regarding healthy or pathological human motion; or understanding of injury mechanisms. Research may be supported that is directed toward the characterization, restoration, rehabilitation, and/or substitution of human functional ability or cognition, or to the interaction between persons with disabilities and their environment. Areas of particular interest are neuroengineering and rehabilitation robotics. The program will also consider research in the areas of: new engineering approaches to understand healthy or pathological motion, both as a target for rehabilitation and as a means to characterize motion related to disability or injury; understanding injury at the tissue- or system-level such that interventions may be developed to reduce the impact of trauma and subsequent disability; or understanding the role of gut microbiota in modulating disability in the context of rehabilitation. Emphasis is placed on significant advancement of fundamental engineering knowledge that facilitates transformative outcomes.

The John Merck Fund has had a longstanding interest in people with intellectual and developmental disorders since its inception in 1970.  In 2012, JMF launched the Developmental Disabilities Translational Research Program, which supports researchers in developing treatments and improving outcomes for individuals with developmental disabilities, particularly Down syndrome and Fragile X syndrome (and FX associated disorders).  The awards are made to the most highly innovative translational research projects that have the greatest potential of investigating rational and effective treatments and interventions for the particular condition being addressed.  The program emphasizes interdisciplinary collaborative grant applications focused primarily on FXS and DS, but the program supports studies focused on other developmental disabilities under special circumstances.  The Fund is particularly interested in translational research that is designed to improve the lives of people with developmental disabilities and their families.  Investigators from a range of disciplines are encouraged to apply.

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) encourages research project grants (R01) investigating the incidence, course, and outcomes of pregnancy among women with disabilities. Areas of interest also include studies to inform preconceptional and antenatal counseling and strategies for addressing barriers to prenatal care, and management of pregnancy, the puerperium, and the transition to parenthood in order to optimize outcomes for women with physical, intellectual and developmental, and/or sensory disabilities and their families. Applicants are encouraged to include women with disabilities and members of the community in the design and conduct of their research.

The purpose of the Field Initiated (FI) Projects program is to develop methods, procedures, and rehabilitation technology that maximize the full inclusion and integration into society, employment, independent living, family support, and economic and social self-sufficiency of individuals with disabilities, especially individuals with the most severe disabilities. Another purpose of the FI Projects program is to improve the effectiveness of services authorized under the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended. The purpose of this MSI-FI competition is to improve the capacity of minority entities to engage in disability and rehabilitation research and development activities. NIDILRR will accomplish this by limiting eligibility for this completion to minority entities and Indian tribes in a manner consistent with Sections 21(b)(2)(A) of the Act, which authorizes NIDILRR to make awards to minority entities and Indian tribes to carry out activities authorized under Title II of the Act. NIDILRR is particularly interested in applications from individual minority entities that have historically been underrepresented in the Federally-sponsored research arena. In carrying out a development activity under a FI Projects development grant, a grantee must use knowledge and understanding gained from research to create materials, devices, systems, methods, measures, techniques, tools, protypes, processes, or intervention protocols that are beneficial to the target population. The Department of Education is issuing a notice inviting applications for new awards for fiscal year (FY) 2018 for Personnel Development to Improve Services and Results for Children with Disabilities-Associate Degree Preservice Program Improvement Grants to Support Personnel Working with Young Children with Disabilities

The Jerome Lejeune Foundation is the world's oldest and largest private funder of research into treatments for intellectual disabilities of genetic origin, especially, but not limited to, Down syndrome. The Foundation's specific research interest is to discover a means of  treating genetic intellectual disabilities in order to improve the memory, speech, and cognition of patients. Researchers who are working in basic or applied science and who have genetic intellectual disabilities (Down syndrome, Fragile X syndrome, Cri-du-Chat syndrome, rare chromosomal anomalies, Rett syndrome, Williams Beuren, Willi Prader, Angelman…) as their therapeutic target  are invited to submit proposals for funding assistance from the Foundation.

Applications submitted to this FOA should propose to develop, validate, and/or calibrate outcome measures, surrogate markers, and biomarkers in model organisms that can inform and effectively translate to human clinical trials for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). In addition, applications may propose to conduct rigorous, controlled and standardized preclinical animal trials designed for safety, toxicity, and efficacy prediction or to perform an independent validation of efficacy in animals prior to human clinical trials. The goal of this FOA is to accelerate and improve the preclinical testing of candidate treatments and therapeutic compounds in order to move promising new drug therapies into clinical trials. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention hereby notify Program Director(s)/Principal Investigator(s) (PD(s)/PI(s)) holding specific types of research grants (activity codes listed above) that funds are available for administrative supplements to enhance the diversity of the research workforce by recruiting and supporting students, postdoctorates, and eligible investigators from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups that have been shown to be underrepresented in health-related research. The purpose of Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to fund and support state controlled institutions of higher education, non-government organizations and private colleges and universities that work with people with mobility limitations and/or intellectual disabilities (ID) and have national reach through a network of 15 or more state/local programs, chapters and/or affiliates across the United States.

The Nano-Biosensing program is part of the Engineering Biology and Health cluster, which includes also 1) Cellular and Biochemical Engineering; 2) Engineering of Biomedical Systems; 3) Biophotonics; and 4) Disability and Rehabilitation Engineering. The Nano-Biosensing program supports fundamental engineering research on devices and methods for measurement and quantification of biological analytes. Proposals that incorporate emerging nanotechnology methods are especially encouraged. Areas of interest include: Multi-purpose sensor platforms that exceed the performance of current state-of-the-art devices. Novel transduction principles, mechanisms and sensor designs suitable for measurement in practical matrix and sample-preparation-free approaches. These include error-free detection of pathogens and toxins in food matrices, waterborne pathogens, parasites, toxins, biomarkers in body fluids, and others that improve human condition. Nano-biosensors that enable measurement of biomolecular interactions in their native states, transmembrane transport, intracellular transport and reactions, and other biological phenomena. Studies that examine intracellular measurements must include discussion on the significance of the measurement.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to invite applications to perform ancillary studies and secondary analyses of data and/or biospecimens from ongoing or completed studies of the effects of inflammation and/or anti-inflammatory agents on geriatric conditions, such as functional decline, mobility disability, fatigue, falls, cognitive decline/dementia, and chronic pain. Data that can inform designs of possible future interventional studies on modulating the effects of chronic inflammation in such conditions are of particular interest. Analyses of both beneficial and harmful effects of modulating chronic inflammation in older individuals are of interest. Other types of studies of interest to NIA include mechanistic studies to explore the pathophysiologic processes by which chronic, low-grade inflammation may accelerate functional decline or other geriatric conditions, and how these pathways may be disrupted by interventions. The secondary analyses and ancillary studies supported by this (FOA) may be based on data and/or biospecimens from either ongoing or completed clinical trials.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to inform the scientific community of the pain research interests of the various Institutes and Centers (ICs) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and to stimulate and foster a wide range of basic, clinical, and translational studies on pain as they relate to the missions of these ICs. New advances are needed in every area of pain research, from the micro perspective of molecular sciences to the macro perspective of behavioral and social sciences. Although great strides have been made in some areas, such as the identification of neural pathways of pain, the experience of pain and the challenge of treatment have remained uniquely individual and unsolved. Furthermore, our understanding of how and why individuals transition to a chronic pain state after an acute injury is limited. Research to address these issues conducted by interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research teams is strongly encouraged, as is research from underrepresented, minority, disabled, or women investigators.
