Serum Vitamin D and Subsequent Occurrence of Type 2 Diabetes : Epidemiology - 0 views

  •
Serum vitamin D and subsequent occurrence of type 2 diabetes. Knekt P, Laaksonen M, Mattila C, Härkänen T, Marniemi J, Heliövaara M, Rissanen H, Montonen J, Reunanen A. Epidemiology. 2008 Sep;19(5):666-71. PMID: 18496468 doi: 10.1097/EDE.0b013e318176b8ad Conclusions: The results support the hypothesis that high vitamin D status provides protection against type 2 diabetes. Residual confounding may contribute to this association.

Serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D Levels and the Prevalence of Peripheral Arterial Disease: Results from NHANES 2001 to 2004 -- Melamed et al. 28 (6): 1179 -- Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology - 0 views

  •
Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and the prevalence of peripheral arterial disease: results from NHANES 2001 to 2004. Melamed ML, Muntner P, Michos ed, Uribarri J, Weber C, Sharma J, Raggi P. Arterioscler Thromb Vasc Biol. 2008 Jun;28(6):1179-85. Epub 2008 Apr 16. PMID: 18417640 doi: 10.1161/ATVBAHA.108.165886 Conclusions- Low serum 25(OH)D levels are associated with a higher prevalence of PAD. Several mechanisms have been invoked in the literature to support a potential antiatherosclerotic activity of vitamin D. Prospective cohort and mechanistic studies should be designed to confirm this association. Vitamin D is an inhibitor of the renin-angiotensin system and has antiinflammatory and anticoagulant properties. Among 4839 NHANES 2001 to 2004 participants, low 25(OH)D levels were associated with a higher prevalence of PAD, after multivariate adjustment. To confirm this association, longitudinal cohort and mechanistic studies are needed.

Geographic variation in breast cancer mortality in the United States: A hypothesis involving exposure to solar radiation - Sciencedirect - Preventive Medicine - 0 views

  •
Geographic variation in breast cancer mortality in the United States: a hypothesis involving exposure to solar radiation. Garland FC, Garland CF, Gorham ed, Young JF. Prev Med. 1990 Nov;19(6):614-22. PMID: 2263572 doi:10.1016/0091-7435(90)90058-R Vitamin D from sunlight exposure may be associated with low risk for fatal breast cancer, and differences in ultraviolet light reaching the United States population may account for the striking regional differences in breast cancer mortality. The ecological nature of this study is emphasized, and the possibility that an indirect association with dietary and socioeconomic factors could explain these findings is discussed.

The role of vitamin D in cancer prevention. Garland CF, Garland FC, Gorham ED, Lipkin M, Newmark H, Mohr SB, Holick MF. Am J Public Health. 2006 Feb;96(2):252-61. Epub 2005 Dec 27. Review. PMID: 16380576 DOI: 10.2105/AJPH.2004.045260 Vitamin D status differs by latitude and race, with residents of the northeastern UnitED States and individuals with more skin pigmentation being at increasED risk of deficiency. A PubMED database search yieldED 63 observational studies of vitamin D status in relation to cancer risk, including 30 of colon, 13 of breast, 26 of prostate, and 7 of ovarian cancer, and several that assessED the association of vitamin D receptor genotype with cancer risk. The majority of studies found a protective relationship between sufficient vitamin D status and lower risk of cancer. The evidence suggests that efforts to improve vitamin D status, for example by vitamin D supplementation, could rEDuce cancer incidence and mortality at low cost, with few or no adverse effects.

Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D and colon cancer: eight-year prospective study. - [Lancet. 1989] - PubMed Result - 0 views

  •
Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D and colon cancer: eight-year prospective study. Garland CF, Comstock GW, Garland FC, Helsing KJ, Shaw EK, Gorham ED. Lancet. 1989 Nov 18;2(8673):1176-8. PMID: 2572900 Blood samples taken in 1974 in Washington County, Maryland, from 25 620 volunteers were usED to investigate the relation of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD) with subsequent risk of getting colon cancer. 34 cases of colon cancer diagnosED between August, 1975, and January, 1983, were matchED to 67 controls by age, race, sex, and month blood was taken. Risk of colon cancer was rEDucED by 75% in the third quintile (27-32 ng/ml) and by 80% in the fourth quintile (33-41 ng/ml) of serum 25-OHD. Risk of getting colon cancer decreasED three-fold in people with a serum 25-OHD concentration of 20 ng/ml or more. The results are consistent with a protective effect of serum 25-OHD on colon cancer.

Sunlight, vitamin D and the prevention of cancer: a systematic review of epidemiological studies. - [Eur J Cancer Prev. 2009] - PubMed Result - 0 views

  •
Sunlight, vitamin D and the prevention of cancer: a systematic review of epidemiological studies. Rhee HV, Coebergh JW, Vries ED. Eur J Cancer Prev. 2009 Aug 26. [Epub ahead of print] PMID: 19730382 We, therefore, conclude that there is accumulating evidence for sunlight as a protective factor for several types of cancer. The same conclusion can be made concerning high vitamin D levels and the risk of colorectal cancer. This evidence, however, is not conclusive, because the number of (good quality) studies is still limitED and publication biases cannot be excludED. The discrepancies between the epidemiological evidence for a possible preventive effect of sunlight and vitamin D and the question of how to apply the findings on the beneficial effects of sunlight to (public) health recommendations are discussED.
