    This site is a great resource to help students get into the minds of their favorite pop artists. Students often find it easier to connect to pop tunes than to classical music. This site provides a list of different pop tunes/artists along with descriptions about those pieces and artists. This helps students realize the thought behind creating music, which they can then transfer to their school music class. This site also includes blogs about songwriter interviews, quizzes, and song facts to name a few. The featured songs fall into the category "daily top ten" or "weekyl top ten," keeping the songs up-to-date and easy for young students to recognize/connect with.

The site is directed toward elementary age students, though you could get away with middle school students too. High school teachers might want to create their own games.

    Amazing resource for lesson plans, worksheets, and games to teach students about a wide variety of music topics. This website would be great for creating lesson plans for subs and would also be a great resource if you can't find printed worksheets that address theory. The games are also fun and educational, asking students to identify instruments, tempos, etc. and can act as quizzes that can be scored and printed out. Great resource!

    Music Tech Teacher is an open resource offered by Karen Garrett as an extension of her own music classes she had previously been teaching. Ms. Garrett offers free lessons, worksheets and assessments that can be downloaded as .pdfs and used by any teachers looking for materials that could be used within their own classrooms. Ms. Garrett's resources also have a strong focus on teachers looking to specifically make use of technology in their classes.

    The Army's music is a source for several beneficial resources. You can find upcoming performances for all of the bands to find a performance closes to you. These bands include the active bands, Army Reserve Bands, National Guard bands, and the U.S. Army School of Music Band. Each band will also have smaller ensembles such as jazz bands and rock bands. The site also has recordings of the Army band performing some traditional ceremonial songs including marches, fanfares, and even bugle calls that are found on the music tab. This is very beneficial if you are are trying to perform a patriotic show or performing for the school's JROTC programs. There are pages for the National Anthem and The Army Song that provides the history of the songs as well as the lyrics and recordings. You can click on the songs titles to download mp3 files. The education tab is great because it has a list of U.S. Army Music Master Classes for every instrument and covers a wide range of topics. From basics and fundamentals to practicing to percussion. Master classes are added periodically. When you click on the title of the master class, a PDF will download. You can also request for a clinicians, clinic teams, master classes, or guest conductors to come out to your school. The only expense you might have to pay is for travel expenses if they are not in the area.

    As a beginning band teacher, this program is incredibly valuable. Be Part of the Band is a fantastic resource to aide music educators in the recruitment process. The program offers high quality tools to help attract as many students to the band program as possible. Proper recruitment is crucial to the success of a program but is sometimes overlooked, and this program has a variety of ways to help bridge the gap between participating and non-participating students. On top of everything, the resources on this website are completely free of charge.

This website provides free resources for both recruitment and organization for bands. Individuals are able to make donations to the program, but no payment is required. Beapartoftheband.com not only provides demonstration videos for each instrument, the site also provides eighteen documents to assist with the recruitment process.

    Band recruitment is the biggest event in the life of a band director.  This site features high quality tools to help make our lives easier. It also features famous people that have been band members.  Students need to relate to the bigger picture sometimes.  They need to see that big athletic stars can be in the band as well.  I am always looking for new perspective to recruitment.

    Soundation is a fully functioning cloud-based DAW, similar to Soundtrap. The look is darker and more professional, and the effects processing is more sophisticated. This could be a good option for college-level recording and collaboration, whereas Soundtrap's colorful look and simplicity would be more appropriate for middle- and high-school use.

    Soundation is a Digital Audio Workstation similar to sound trap though soundation appears more professional, and the effects are more sophisticated. With soundation, students learn to do recording, editing, mixing, instrument patches, and MIDI input. Soundation is good for university level whereas Soundtrap's simplicity is good for middle and high school. Like soundtrap, it has a free one month trial with limited accessibility and to access the full premium, one has to pay. Soundation helps students acquire the 4Cs i.e Collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. It is a good resource for teaching studio composition and for enhancing the musicianship of non traditional music students.

    SmartMusic has interactive, web-based editions of many popular instrumental, band, chorus, and orchestra method books, as well as a massive collection of sheet music. Students can listen, loop, record and submit pieces they are working on. A neat feature of SmartMusic is that students can click on a single note and hear how it is supposed to sound, and how to finger that note on their instrument. Students can adjust tempo, play with a metronome, use a tuner to check pitch, and more. A paid subscription allows teachers to create online classrooms for assigning and assessing work, and have access to the entire SmartMusic catalog.

    SmartMusic is a fantastic subscription based software that can be purchased by schools to assist with lesson book and repertoire study. I have used it with my students and our sight reading skills have been tremendously better. We have also performed better at adjudications due to the amount of sight reading exercises available.

  • Fixed Do ( used in a lot of the European countries ) where they actually use the sol-fa note names to identify notes rather than letter names (C-D-E etc.) &nbsp;So this means the note names remain the same regardless of the key that is being played.

      An old professor told me fixed Do was helpful for producing musicians with perfect pitch, however that is not my goal when teaching solfege.
  • Movable Do &nbsp;where&nbsp;Do&nbsp;is always the tonic. For example, in C major, C is&nbsp;do; in D major, D is&nbsp;do; in E-flat minor, E-flat is&nbsp;do, and so on. And the sol-fa syllables always stay the same when going from one key to the next regardless if there are sharps or flats.

    The Violin Site is a website with many titles of free sheet music. The music is organized by composer's last name. There is music from composers such as Vivaldi, Bach, Beethoven, Accolay, and Haydn. For some pieces, students are provided with the violin and piano part and for other pieces, students are only provided with the violin part.

We can become so absorbed with getting our students to do well that we may forget to actually tell them when they do well. It may seem small, but simply acknowledging when a student does what is asked of them can keep them motivated to keep doing it.

    Online Practice Record is a fantastic tool to aide performers of all levels with keeping a record of their practice. The program is easy to use and tracks practice time, music practiced, and questions or comments the user might have to refer to later. The records can be printed or emailed to others, which is an important feature for teachers. The teacher even has the option of entering comments directly into a practice record.

    This site is great for teachers looking to motivate students to practice more consistently. Its purpose is to make practicing more interactive by providing a record of student practicing and the opportunity for teachers to view and comment on the student's practicing. The recourses include practice logs, comments by teachers, student-set goals, and the pieces practiced. This site is very student-directed in the sense that the students set their own practice goals and must be motivated to be more successful in their practicing in order to make progress in their record of practicing statistics. Although you do have to register to use this site, there is no charge and it allows teachers to provdie students with some guidance in their practicing.

This site is always under development. A person can be a member, donate, or use the many free interactive links.     Teoria is a Music Theory website (similar to musictheory.com) that offers step-by-step instructions on a wide variety of music theory concepts. The quizzes are helpful in assessing students in their understanding of theory concepts and allow the teacher to edit the types of questions on the quiz, the time limits, and the opportunity to correct the answers.

    This website is suitable for teachers who give students free time to work on music games. Many different music topics are taught by the music teachers and a better way for students to retain the information would include turning some of their assignments into competition. One thing i have learned, elementary students love to be competitive, so if the students are able to get high scores on music games, then they are retaining and getting the information.
