Podcast hosted by four music educators who are early in their teaching careers. Various topics of use to a new music teacher as each host has a different background and teaching assignment (choral, band, strings).

The Rhythm Trainer is a simple flash-based game that reinforces rhythm concepts. Students can either enter the rhythm that they hear, or choose the correct audio that matches the rhythm they see. Each example is four beats long, and there are a limited number of rhythms available. Students can select any or all of the 8 rhythms available to practice. Results can be emailed to the student's teacher.

The Rhythm trainer is another great source for helping students learn the principles of ear training. Teachers can load listening examples of varying rhythmic figures which students can respond to picking the examples they think best fit. Students can choose two modes of rhythm training which either provide them with choices for answers or require them build their answers based on the specific rhythms they are being trained on. The Rhythm Trainer does require the use Adobe Flash Player in order to play the examples but can be great for anyone teaching or learning the very basics developing good ear training skills.

This is a great tool to have to teach students rhythm. I use this to teach my private students to strengthen their ability to read rhythm. They find this website quite fun, and they enjoy all of the practices in which assign.

Music history and elements of theory, as approached from rock music. Useful for the older students, who would appreciate seeing a connection between classical music and what they (or their peers) listen to.

This website is a fantastic resource for teaching backgrounds about Rock n Roll. I've used this as a web quest assignment for students, but could easily be adapted to full-class instruction. Offers engaging videos with great examples and connections.

Hooktheory is a DAW that allows musicians to create music based on chords. They offer access to two volumes of music theory book for students and teachers, as well as the ability to create assignments and keep a grade book for music teachers.

Apronus Piano is an online piano that works on both touchscreens and with piano keyboards. As opposed to some online keyboard that play C when you press the letter C, D when you press the letter D, it uses the keyboard as close to a piano as possible. The second row of keys corresponds to the white keys on the piano and the number row corresponds to the black keys as they occur (with one or two exceptions). The bottom two rows can be used to play chords. The range of the keyboard can be adjusted to hear different notes. This online piano can be used as extra practice for general music or piano students or as a substitution for a real piano if keyboards are not available but computers are available. It could also be used in conjunction with composition assignments or for choral students to practice vocal lines.

This website offers information about hearing and how to preserve your hearing, which can be a useful lesson for many student musicians.

Pertinent information about ear health as it pertains to listening to audio with headphones and preventing ear loss. Could be a good resource for music teachers who engage in individual listening assignments, helping students to understand the importance of turning the volume down when things get too loud, etc.

This website was created by Jon F. Mueller, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at North Central College in Illinois. Mueller discusses the differences between traditional assessment and authentic assessment - two different concepts that have different long-term goals and outcomes for students. Mueller, a strong advocate for authentic assessment, provides various examples to illustrate the pros and cons of both methods of assessment at different levels and fields of education, while providing data and research to support his stance. Mueller also provides information and structured examples on how educators can incorporate authentic assessment (in many forms) in their classrooms.

A website to help create and utilize musical assessments. A teacher can learn about new assessments, compare state and national music standards, and learn about the most up-to-date musical research.

This site provides several useful resources for educators. It is an authentic assessment toolbox filled with tips to help teachers create rubrics, include standards in their assignments, and examples of assessments to use.

Google Classroom is a fantastic way to manage your classroom, engage students, and have assignments posted and submitted without any papers being lost. A lot of music teachers have no idea where to start with this software. This article posted by NAfME details four ways to integrate Google Classroom into your music classroom.

Flat is a cloud-based online music notation software. This is another alternative to Finale Notepad, MuseScore, and Noteflight.

FLAT is essentially Google's attempt at notation software. Thus, it is extremely intuitive. Though more limited than other programs, it essentially does everything a student composer would need. Students can sign up for an account with a Gmail address and can easily share their scores with each other and their teacher.

Music notation softwares like Finale and Sibelius are quite costly for students to purchase and use. Flat.io is a free online music notation software that allows you to notate music online, and share it with your friends in the cloud. It is collaborative in a way that people get to comment on your music, and you also get to comment on other people's compositions. All you need is to sign up with either google, facebook, or with your email address. It is a good resource for teachers to set notation assignments, and while students do the assignments, they learn many concepts in music such as tempo, speed, dynamics, phrasing, structure, to mention but a few.

Through this site, students can engage in a variety of music theory or aural skills activities. Using the program's interface, one can engage with activities such as melodic, harmonic, two-part, and rhythmic dictation as well as chord analysis. It uses a click-drag method to assign notes and/or pitches to an exercise.

This website is an extensive list of music apps that have been reviewed for entertainment and educational value. The site shows apps by category and even has a free app section. The app reviews are informative and the author actually tests them on children.

This website provides suggestions of apps that can be used in the classroom. The creator reviews apps and suggests how they can be used in a variety of classrooms. This is where I found the app I reviewed for this week's assignment!

open source music software.  I did not like the earlier versions, but I think it may be time to check it out again.

This website is a good music notation program. Students can use it to make original scores or copy something for an assignment. The free download is a bonus.

Well structured practice is the key to improvement

Music Learning Community is a site for music educators and music students that includes a great deal of information on computer-based learning. Included are games and activities that teach theory and build aural skills. There is a free trial but the site requires a membership fee.

This website offers hundreds of interactive games to teach students music theory, rhythms, ear-training, sight-reading, and notation analysis. Designed to make learning musical concepts and take-home assignments more fun and engaging, these games are broken down into various levels for students. Lower levels can be effective for early elementary students, and higher levels can be effective for students in high school. Games are colorful and entertaining, and they list certain scores that students should strive to achieve. Most games have a lesson version, a practice version, and a quiz version. Teachers can track scores and data of individual students to see strengths and weaknesses.

This website has many games that can be used to learn various musical concepts. Some games are free, but there are more games with the paid subscription. You can pay monthly or yearly and it can be used for 5 to 50 people.

Resource for UF Masters in Music Education. Smartmusic is an incredible resource that can be used in the classroom to aid in individual assessment. It allows for a student to be accompanied and even record assignments to be turned into the teacher. This program greatly reduces class time spent on assessment!

Resource for UF Masters in Music Education. I love this resource primarily for the fun and interactive nature that the games provide to my classroom. There are plenty of resources such as lessons, pre-made assessment, and videos. However, the games allow students to enjoy learning through assessment and interactive scenarios.

This website is a great resource for beginning to integrate technology into your classroom. There are ready-made lesson plans, as well as fun activities to do with your students. There are worksheets on theory, lessons on piano, and so much more.

SmartMusic has interactive, web-based editions of many popular instrumental, band, chorus, and orchestra method books, as well as a massive collection of sheet music. Students can listen, loop, record and submit pieces they are working on. A neat feature of SmartMusic is that students can click on a single note and hear how it is supposed to sound, and how to finger that note on their instrument. Students can adjust tempo, play with a metronome, use a tuner to check pitch, and more. A paid subscription allows teachers to create online classrooms for assigning and assessing work, and have access to the entire SmartMusic catalog.

SmartMusic is music learning software for music teachers and students. It makes music learning easy and fun. Students can continue their learning outside school. Teachers can also assess students outside the school wall. Smart music is good for rehearsals because a student can rehearse at home when the teacher is listening in and correcting him/her from anywhere else. It is easy to access and a good resource for music classes.

The purpose of the resource is for student and teacher practice/classroom tools. The content included in this source is a subscription to a web-based service that allows students and educators access to sight-reading material, repertoire accompaniments, and method books. Could be useful for encouraging student practice

This site is stocked full of useful features for students in the form of games, quizzes, and a great flash keyboard with music to match. Using the number keys, students can practice even if they don't have a piano keyboard. There are also lessons and resources for teachers, too.

This website is suitable for teachers who give students free time to work on music games. Many different music topics are taught by the music teachers and a better way for students to retain the information would include turning some of their assignments into competition. One thing i have learned, elementary students love to be competitive, so if the students are able to get high scores on music games, then they are retaining and getting the information.

The creator of this site, Karen Garrett, has compiled different games and quizzes to make her music class more interactive. Students can access games about different instruments, note naming, rhythm, and even composers. There are also theory quizzes and worksheets that anyone can access.

This is a terrific collection of music listening activities compiled by a music teacher. These would be great for elementary and middle school students - a fun collection of ideas is here!
