An App That Encrypts, Shreds, Hashes and Salts - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  • A group of computer security experts want to turn that model on its head with Wickr, a new mobile app that they hope will set a new standard for how personal data is disseminated. Wickr’s motto: The Internet is forever. Your private conversations don’t need to be. The app, which became available in Apple’s iTunes store on Tuesday, lets users transmit texts, photos and videos through secure and anonymous means previously reserved for the likes of the military and intelligence operatives. Text messages, photos and videos sent via Wickr are secured using military-grade encryption and never stored. The service camouflages user names and other identifiable information, such as a phone’s identification number, by appending several random digits to each value, then mashing them up with a mathematical algorithm, a process security experts refer to as “salting” and “hashing.” Wickr hashes and salts that information several times and only stores the encoded result.

Cisco gives stores more info on shopper location and habits with ThinkSmart buy | VentureBeat - 0 views

  •
Cisco is buying Wi-Fi analytics company ThinkSmart Technologies for an unspecified amount. By analyzing Wi-Fi data, Cicso says retailers should get a better scoop on how quickly consumers move in stores, when they're the most crowded, and where consumers go when they shop. (Of course, this assumes that most shoppers are carrying smartphones with them, which is likely the case.)

Why Burberry Wants to Bring the Online Experience to Stores - 3 views

  •
burberry's strategy: The flagship, by Burberry's description, has seamlessly integrated technology throughout. Full-length screens wrap the store, transitioning between audio-visual content displays, live-streaming hubs and and mirrors. Radio-frequency identification (RFID) chips have been attached to certain clothes and accessories so that when a customer approaches one of the screens in a fitting room, specific content - say, information about a bag's stitching and craftsmanship, or a video showing how a skirt was worn on the catwalk - will appear.
