"Spatial Database Tips and Tricks Workshop Mapping APIs are great for data display and capture, but how do you build applications that allow query and geoprocessing of spatial data without becoming a Java or C++ programming guru? How about using the power of SQL, the standard database query language, and the spatial extensions provided by SQL Server, Oracle Spatial and PostGIS."

Microsoft reveals zero-day attacks against Word | Larry Seltzer ZDNet 2014-03-24 - 0 views

  •
"By Larry Seltzer for Zero Day | March 24, 2014 -- 19:16 GMT (12:16 PDT) Microsoft announced today that an unpatched vulnerability in Microsoft Word is being exploited in the wild. All versions of Microsoft Word, both Mac and Windows, and several related programs like the Word Viewer and Word Automation Services on Microsoft SharePoint Server are also vulnerable, but the current attacks are directed at Microsoft Word 2010. Exploits such as these are often version-specific, and in targeted attacks, such as this appears to be, the attacker may already know which version he needs to exploit. Microsoft also says that Microsoft Outlook could also be exploited with such an RTF file if Word were set as the viewer for Outlook. In the default configuration Word is the viewer in Outlook 2007, 2010 and 2013."

Odds And Not Ends: Automated translation: Babelfish 101 - DDN C. Almansi 2005-03-04 - 0 views

"Babelfish 101 (also appliable to the Google translator) Babelfish is not a little polyglot genius lurking in your computer or in cyberspace Babelfish is A computer program made of lists of words and phrases in different languages complex, but not all-covering, rules applied to these lists in order to produce translations Babelfish will not give you a publishable or even editable version of your text in another language analyse and render correctly complex sentence structures always choose the meaning you had it mind if two or more words have the same spelling confuse two words due to approximate memory Babelfish will produce apparent gibberish give you a rough idea of what someone else's original text is about Therefore, when dealing with Babelfish, you must use commonsense Don't use Babelfish to produce a translation into another language, especially if you don't know that language If you know others will use Babelfish to read you, use simple sentence structure and avoid terms that can have several meanings If you read something absurd or outrageous in a Babelfish translation, don't immediately attribute the absurdity or outrage to the author. Try to guess from the context what the author might have meant Compare what the author might have meant with what you know of Babelfish's limitations, to see if these limitations are the likely cause of the apparent absurdity or outrage be wary of commonsense The author may indeed have expressed something that would baffle you even if you both used the same language: because your cultural references are different, because s/he is using irony because (make your own list) ask when in doubt ;-)" Avevo scritto questo post su un blog del Digital Divide Network (DDN) che non c'è più. ELAN description | The Language Archive - 2 views

  •
"ELAN is a professional tool for the creation of complex annotations on video and audio resources. With ELAN a user can add an unlimited number of annotations to audio and/or video streams. An annotation can be a sentence, word or gloss, a comment, translation or a description of any feature observed in the media. Annotations can be created on multiple layers, called tiers. Tiers can be hierarchically interconnected. An annotation can either be time-aligned to the media or it can refer to other existing annotations. The textual content of annotations is always in Unicode and the transcription is stored in an XML format. ELAN provides several different views on the annotations, each view is connected and synchronized to the media playhead. Up to 4 video files can be associated with an annotation document. Each video can be integrated in the main document window or displayed in its own resizable window. ELAN delegates media playback to an existing media framework, like Windows Media Player, QuickTime or JMF (Java Media Framework). As a result a wide variety of audio and video formats is supported and high performance media playback can be achieved. ELAN is written in the Java programming language and the sources are available for non-commercial use. It runs on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Main other features navigate through the media with different step sizes easy navigation through existing annotations waveform visualization of .wav files support for template documents input methods for a variety of script systems multi-tier regular expression search, within a single document or in a selection of annotation documents support for user definable Controlled Vocabularies import and export of Shoebox/Toolbox, CHAT, Transcriber (import only), Praat and csv/tab-delimited text files export to interlinear text, html, smil and subtitles text printing of the annotations multiple undo/redo Download ELAN"

The good, not so good, and long view on Bmail « The Berkeley Blog - Chris Hoo... - 0 views

  •
Chris Hoofnagle, director of BCLT's privacy programs | 3/6/13 "...We need to be less infatuated with "the cloud," which to some extent is a marketing fad. Many of the putative benefits of the cloud are disclaimed in these services' terms of service. For instance, a 2009 survey of 31 contracts found that, "…In effect, a number of providers of consumer-oriented Cloud services appear to disclaim the specific fitness of their services for the purpose(s) for which many customers will have specifically signed up to use them." The same researchers found that providers' business models were related to the generosity of terms. This militates towards providers that charge some fee for service as opposed to "free" ones that monetize user data. We should charge our IT professionals with the duty of documenting problems with outsourced services. To more objectively understand the cloud phenomenon, we should track the real costs associated with outsourcing, including outages, the costs of managing the relationship with Google, and the technical problems that users experience. Outsourcing is not costless. We could learn that employees have simply been transferred from the operation of CalMail to the management of bMail. We should not assume that systems mean fewer people-they may appropriately require meaningful staffing to fulfill our needs. As the expiration date of system wide Google contract approaches in June 2015, these metrics will help us make an economical decision. Finally, there are technical approaches that, if effective, could blunt, but not completely eliminate, the privacy problems created by cloud services. Encryption tools, such as CipherCloud, exist to mask data from Google itself. This can help hide the content of messages, reduce data mining risks from Google, and cause the government to have to come to Berkeley officials to gain access to content. The emergence of these services indicates that there is a shared concern about s

You can also choose to explore the course for free, in which case you'll have full access to videos, discussions, and practice assignments, and view-only access to graded assignments. You'll see the options for each individual course when you click "enroll" on the course information page; courses that aren't part of this change will continue to show the options to enroll in the course either with or without a Certificate. Most courses that are part of Specializations will begin offering this new experience this week, and certain other courses will follow later this year."

Theater School: Students as Actors and Writers for the Stage - 0 views

  •
The "Teatro a Scuola" (Theater School) project, directed at 14-18 year-old, Real innovation lies in the involvement of students as writers, in a collaborative theatrical storytelling. During the theater workshop the teacher in charge of the project planned and implemented with the participants experimental activity that was inserted within the Italian program. Its purpose is to stimulate participants' creativity. It aims at to become an integral part of the activities foreseen by the school syllabus and to offer, next to the traditional learning method, a form of learning by doing. The project consists in three distinct, yet interdependent, moments: a first theoretical stage, which foresees a short series of lessons on the history of theater; a second stage dedicated to a theater workshop (elocution, lively reading, mime, song, dance etc.); and a final show, i.e. a genuine theatrical representation for the whole school and all citizens. Characteristics of innovation and experimentation of the project were that: students were not only actors but also authors and screenwriters; also, the project involved elders of the University of the Third Age (NGO)
