Comparing Computer based learning needs of Primary and Early Years.

Joanne Dwyer (2004) writes that some schools seem to give its students in the upper primary years priority over students in the early school years resulting in a reduced potential for learning with computer based technologies in the school environment. She expresses the concern that for equitability all students regardless of age or learning needs should be given maximum support and access to computer-based learning environments. This is obviously an issue that needs to be addressed as we intergrate ICT in to the curriculum. Nice read Kate. Thanks.

Unfortunately early years education often takes a back burner to higher levels of primary education across a range of areas and especially with regard to ICT. I am not sure whether it is a lack of understanding of the importance of early childhood education or just battling to get resources. Even with all of the research about the advantages of good quality early childhood education many still see these years as not containing any 'real' learning, just play. If young learners are viewed as 'just playing' then why would people use ICT budgets on them? As early years teachers one of our biggest battles will be to fight for recognition of early childhood education and the resources to support it.

Another good online resource.  This one is free and while it is British Based it covers most year levels; Early Years, Key Stage 1 (yr1-2), Key Stage 2 (yr3-6).  I have used a few of the early years resources and found the very useful.

Hi I accidently stumbled across Educreators (similiar to Edublogs on a goggle search late at night). It is amazing I even watched a lesson about fractions. Its great to hear people say that we need to work together. I remember years ago a friend of mine (who was a Grade 6 teacher) told me of her frustration when she would encourage her students and they were alive with excitement to learn and explore and the work they handed in was exceptional from her point of view. However, six months into the next year she would be so disappointed because the grades of the Year 7 students would be declining and their attitude was one of apathy. What she wanted to do was to work with the Year 7 teacher so with a combined effort they could assist the students to continue their positive attitude throughout their time at upper primary school. The Year 7 teacher felt threatened and the sad cycle continued. Kids are crazy for technology! And it's important to provide early learners with time to simply play, create and use their imaginations. However, teachers must also ensure that students learn to use current technology in this constantly-evolving world.

This is what is expected of early childhood teachers to learn about the benefits of integrating technology and how it reinforces key technical skills to thrive in coming ages where technology is becoming a necessity.

This Assistant Teacher works in Kindergarten and is always on the look out for ways to integrate ICT into the children's learning and the kindergarten curriculum. I'm really looking forward to reading through her past and future blog posts, in the hope of getting some inspiration and ideas on how I can use ICT in the early childhood context. I follow this group on Facebook and love seeing all,of their post. They post ideas and believes that should just be second nature to all childhood teachers though sadly are not. Play really does hold such an important role in the learning of young children, whether it is using the natural environment or ICT resources, allow children to be children and enjoy their childhood and let them learn naturally not through over processed activities designed by teachers that just need to meet paper work requirements.

ICT and the Early Years

Hi, I liked reading your article about bringing ICT into the early years education and how it can work as another teacher. In Australian schools as most pre-service teachers and if you are a parent would probably know. The children are using Reading Eggs and Matheletics. My children are in years 1 and 3 and have found these programs easy to follow and navigate through the levels with a lot of success in their learning. They can also log-in on our home computer to extend their learning further. Programs such as these are a great tool in encouraging the skills of reading and learning maths without overloading them with too much computer time.

Using technology in the early years

The abstract for this sounds interesting Can popular culture and information communication technologies (ICT) broaden early years' multiliteracies experiences? This paper presents a case study that begins with boys role-playing Star Wars action scenes at the commencement of the school year, and concludes with an end-of-year school community celebration of a new DVD Star Wars movie sequel, designed and performed by the boys. The Children's Star Wars Project was developed in a small Western Australian independent community school committed to the Reggio Emilia educational philosophy. The case study provides an exemplar of the integral relationship between early childhood pedagogy, multiliteracies metalanguage, and multimodal designs of meaning. Implications for educational research are that popular culture and ICT can be readily integrated with early childhood education (ECE) to broaden multiliteracies experiences. As shown in this case study, these experiences facilitate the achievement of The Early Years Learning Framework for Australia outcomes.

Thanks for sharing! My professional experience will be in a Preschool setting so it is wonderful to see how other Preschool educators have been integrating ICTs and a rationale behind their use. I've read a few articles now regarding ICT in Preschool settings an it is interesting to note that most have been from NZ! Hi Kate I also found this site very informative and used this in my blog. I love photos and I strongly believe that digital cameras play an important role in early childhood settings and advocate the importantance of allowing children to explore their world through using digital camera. Working in 3-5 room I have seen many positive expereinces, including behaviour management, as children use digital camera. Sadly the new qualified teacher the centre has employed views camera for "teachers' only (not even assistants can use them) and only one photo per month per child and no viewing them on the television.
