  I don't mean to belittle the successes that my fellow museum educators have achieved in advocating for the public dimension over the years. But, as one colleague put it when I discussed this blog with her - "[museum educators] have changed the identity of museums, but perhaps have not gained power."  Without this power, in my view, advocates of the public dimension have had and will continue to have great difficulty in fundamentally transforming their institutions. And most of our museums, exhibitions  and programs will continue to look and operate pretty much the same as they always have.

Here is a post to inform you of two conferences that will take place at the end of November and beginning of December, one in London, one in Paris. Both are organised by the Wikimedia Foundation in partnership with arts institutions who will be presenting and discussing their experiences on knowledge sharing and partnerships with Wikimedia in that regard. As structured organisations with a deep sense of hierarchy and copyright protection of their pieces and collections,  arts organisations tend to present themselves as essentially resisting these notions, although avid readers of Museum 2.0, Museum 3.0, and French speaking readers of Mixeum are fully aware that the picture of museums today on these issues is a fragmented one.

The annual UKMW conferences, convened by the Museums Computer Group, have long been the place for high quality presentations and discussions on the matters that are shaping museums online today. As the UK heritage sector continues to live through difficult times, this year's conference is an opportunity to reflect on the new landscape museums are now in, learn from inspiring speakers and network with your peers.

The next Stage: Moving from isolated digital Collections to Interoperable Digital Libraries: Online collections do not yet function like conventional libraries. Many digital collections are experimental and lack service components, and few have preservation components. The function of searching across collections is a dream frequently discussed but seldom realized at a robust level. This paper places a conceptual framework upon digital library development, and discusses how we might move from isolated digital collections to interoperable digital libraries.

I've spent much of the past three years on the road giving workshops and talks about audience participation in museums. This post shares some of the most interesting questions I've heard throughout these experiences. I like to use half of any allotted time slot to talk and half for Q&A, so we usually have time to get into meaty discussions. Feel free to add your own questions and answers in the comments!

For Walker Open Field, we wanted a way to collect community submitted events and display them on our site. We have our own calendar and we discussed whether adding the events to our internal Calendar CMS was the best way, or if using an outside calendar solution was the direction to go. In the end, we decided to do both, using Google Calendar for community events and our own calendar CMS for Walker-programmed events.

Sparked by previous discussions, I wonder if anyone is aware of any successful projects/tools that allow users to geotag resources on the web (or to contribute corrections/enhancements to things already tagged)

There has been a lot of buzz lately about mobile technology with the release of mobile apps by some major museums like MoMA, The Brooklyn Museum, and the Museum of Natural History. Reviews have been mixed, but the discussion about the way mobile technology should be used in museums has definitely picked up speed.

BarCamp Community-Wiki: ... is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos and interaction from participants who are the main actors of the event.
