Tagung in Kooperation mit der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Institut für Musikwissenschaft und Medienwissenschaft, Fachgebiet Medienwissenschaft  Im Rahmen einer internationalen Tagung wenden wir uns den netzbedingten Veränderungen musealer Speicher und archivischer Dispositive zu. Sich zunehmend ins Digitale verlagernde Kulturtechniken bedingen Veränderungen der institutionellen Archiv-Verständnisse und damit des Aufbaus und der Nutzung analoger wie digitaler Sammlungsrepräsentationen. Wir fragen, welche Rückwirkungen dieser Wandel auf museale und kulturwissenschaftliche Objektbegriffe (auch technischer Medien) sowie auf künftige kuratorische und wissenschaftliche Tätigkeitsfelder erwarten lässt. Werden die Begriffe Original und Museum mit dem Einzug digitaler Archive und netzbasierter Speicher möglicherweise neu zu definieren sein? Und: Welche Probleme der Re-Präsentation bleiben gegenüber traditionellen Formen der Speicherung und Ordnung bestehen und welche kommen künftig hinzu?

This year MuseumNext will focus on 'What's Next' and will use this call for papers to create a programme that is structured around eight key themes. These will be directed by the proposals submitted from our community to highlight the direction in which museums and technology are heading.

Digital technology has the potential to influence every aspect of the cultural heritage environment. Archaeologists and cultural heritage scientists as well as Information and Communication Technology (ICT) experts have in the past collaborated to find solutions to optimise all aspects of capturing, managing, analysing and delivering cultural information, but many unsolved problems remain. The goal of VAST 2012 will be to build on the open dialogue between these different areas of expertise, and in particular allow ICT experts to have a better understanding of the critical requirements that cultural heritage professionals have for managing and delivering cultural information and for the ICT systems that support these activities.

This conference focuses on the interaction between museums and communities. In times of mobility and change, history museums play an important role in societal questions of social cohesion, identity and belonging. In search of their roots, people turn to heritage. History is popular as never before and it surfaces in all contemporary media. At the same time, the communication era offers new possibilities to form communities, based on common interests and preferences or popular and corporate culture. Museums in general, as part of the public sphere, are an important tool in this dynamic process of heritage formation and the performance of community.  

The first few years of social media brought new approaches to audience engagement, emphasising knowledge sharing through open platforms. As organisations explored the potential of social media, they focused on the impact this would have on their internal practices. Today there is growing emphasis on how these seemingly democratic forms of communication can support and develop culturally diverse audiences.

The conference will focus on building communities, empowering audiences and fundraising all approached from the perspective of new technology and developments on the web

Cultural Heritage and the Semantic Web British Museum & UCL Study Day - Jan 13th The World Wide Web is an essential part of the Museum's toolkit for publishing information, engaging visitors and communicating across the globe. However, museum web sites and information systems are still largely silos that make it difficult for us to realize the benefits of bringing data together. The growing momentum of the Semantic Web movement means a greater investment in the technology and tools needed to convert its potential into practical opportunities that museums can utilise. Und: "A museum object is more like an illustration, or witness of the past, than information in its own right. Cultural historical research means understanding 'possible pasts', the facts, events, material, social and psychological influences and motivations. It lives from understanding contexts, by pulling together bits and pieces of related facts from disparate resources, which can typically not be classified under subjects in an obvious way. It lives from taking into account all known facts."

Hosted by Department of Archaeology, University of Southampton, United Kingdom from 18-19 April 2011, the VIA 2011 Conference marks the culmination of the three year Visualisation in Archaeology project. The Organising Committee is drawn from Visualisation in Archaeology project staff alongside representatives of English Heritage, Institute for Archaeologists (IfA), and Association of Archaeological Illustrators and Surveyors (AAI&S).
