What Is a Telecommunications Network? - 1 views

  • it is now understood to include Internet, microwave, and wireless equipment as well as the more traditional forms of telephony.
  • The main function of any telecommunications network is to provide efficient transmission of information from a point of origin to a point of termination.
  • Along with the PSTA, or public switched telephone network, that most people are familiar with, there is also the Internet, a medium that is increasingly used for both voice and visual communications. Private computer networks are a common tool in many businesses today, as well as many institutions of higher learning. These basic types are all classified into several categories, which include such options as wide area networks, local area networks, and virtual private networks.

It is common in our daily life but we seldom recoganize.
  • As long as the form of communication allows for the real-time electronic exchange of audio, visual, and data transmissions, there is a good chance that method of communicating can be classified as a telecommunications network.

A telecommunication network used to refer to the collection of switches of wirings used by telephone service; it is now include internet, microwave and wireless equipment as well as telephony. The main function of a telecommunication network is to provide efficient and effect transmission of information. A telecommunication network can set up as WAN and LAN. A telecommunication set up as WAN allows reliable communication between nodes that are geographically located across large distance. Hotels chains that located in different area would like to use this network model. With the same level of security, a telecommunication network set up as LAN is used on a smaller geographic area. It provides phone, data, and internet within an enclosed setting. One example is a hotel, where the phones and internet access are all routed through a network located within a hotel. As technologies continue to advance, the definition and the scope of the telecommunication network will also continue to change. But what will remain the same is the core concept. Before I read this paper, my opinion on a telecommunication network is always indicates telephone service, and now I understand it also include internet, microwave and wireless equipment. I have to say that technology have been changed very fast so that we must keep in mind to update our knowledge on these new technology as well.

Hotels going the "Green" way with Technology - 1 views

  • The industry is growing rapidly and as a large consumer of resources, especially water and energy, green sustainable technology is high on the agenda
  • use a technology powered system for heating which starts up when a guest enters a room, and turns down when they leave
  • much of the pressure to go ‘green’ has come from environmentally sensitive guests who are growing in number
  • ...9 more annotations...
  • Today, green initiatives which were once the USP of luxury hotel segment has spread across the industry and hotels of all sizes are adopting environmentally friendly practices
  • to curb energy consumption, some hotels use wireless controllers that control the Key Card, lighting and air conditioning in rooms.
  • The device requires no additional wiring, saves energy, and does not add numbers to operating costs.
  • others have gone ‘zero garbage’ with vermicomposting, recycling and using biodegradable products.
  • green technology in-house like compact hot water distribution systems that allow hot water to reach end users faster; high performance fireplaces that eliminate air leakages; and dual-flush toilets that use less water than standard toilet
  • While energy-efficient equipment may be costlier both in terms of installation and capital costs
  • long term benefits to be reaped in terms of reduced maintenance and energy saving, especially when energy costs are escalating
  • In some countries, there are also government disincentives for over-consumption of water and energy
  • Numerous hotels are looking to leverage their choices for solar energy, LED lighting, water recycling
  •
This article is very interesting because it does not focus solely on one type of technology, but rather summarizes several technologies and discusses the importance of their uses. Green technologies in hotels can vary from anything affecting the water heating system to air ventilation and even plumbing systems in hotels. As stated in the article, it is extremely important for hoteliers to be aware of these changes that are occurring. Hoteliers may not have to immediately alter their current systems but they should definitely be aware and in tuned to the ever-changing "green" technologies - for if they don't they may be putting their hotels at risk.

In this article the importance of hotels to turn green is highlighted. According to the article more and more people are becoming conscious about the environment and therefore prefer hotels were green practices are being used. In the past the cost of green technologies made them only available for luxury hotels. This has been changing mainly because of the high prices of energy. Now, acquiring green technology is seen as an investment for the future and as a way to reduce costs. Some of these new technologies are wireless controllers that control the Key Card, lighting and air conditioning in rooms. Lights and other devices in the room automatically turn off when guests leaves, and turn on when it comes back. Automatic heating systems and dual-flush toilets, that use less water. Other technologies which hotels are considering are solar energy, LED lightning and the recycling of water within the property.
  •
This article is basically talking about the different green ways that a hotel can operate. For instance in Denmark they have stations set up where a guest can pedal stationary bikes to produce energy which in exchange they receive a free meal from the restaurant. To make hotels more green the hotels are using higher technological systems like changing the ventilation systems that provide fresh air indoors and have timers on the exhaust in the bathrooms. These technological advances to the properties will be more pricey than normal systems but in the long run they will save these hotels money and help them be more earth friendly.
  •
Having worked in the meetings industry for 5 years now, we have also seen the increase of the more eco friendly traveler/meeting planner/attendee. Our accommodations have taken an active stance to incorporate more of the green friendly features to meet the needs of this traveler, but also to cut costs and increase operations efficiency.

Editors Weblog - Immediacy v accuracy: the challenges of information validation - 0 views

  • Twitter is the world news wire of the twenty-first century;
  • Everyone knows exactly how useful microblogging can be when reporting on everything from major world events, such as natural disasters and social upheaval, to local happenings - but the challenge of real-time reporting is not gaining access to information, but rather verifying it.
  • It is not necessary to choose between accuracy and immediacy; the future of quality journalism, which at the current times seems so marred by unethical practice, lies in a successful combination of the two.
  •
Immediacy vs Accuracy, which would you go with? The media is rushing everyday to deal with the two and make up a news report that consists of the two. Whoever has it broadcasting first is the winner. This article speaks on how twitter has changed the way we find about information now and days. Although Twitter will have a news shooting around the world in less than a minute. How accurate is the information? Stars have been killed by twitters power to spread the news of the stars death faster than the news station can get it on the tv screens. Is the information accurate? unfortunately not. This is where twitter as well as other media sites should manage what gets put out there before it gets publish. Just like what tv stations do. They verify and then they broadcast. As well as wikipedia. Someone should verify the information on each page and should not allow users to change or input information into that webpage.

Recludo introduces time-controlled biometric access system | Hotel Management - 0 views

  • With the time-controlled fingerprint access system, the fingerprint is stored locally in the lock and only for the duration of the stay. After this, the memory is automatically erased.
  • an added advantage of the Recludo lock is that guests can by-pass the front desk and go directly to the room which is accessed with a code sent to the guest during the booking process.
  •
"Recludo's time controlled, biometric fingerprint access system lets the guest unlock any door with the tip of their finger"
  •
The Recludo security system introduces a minimum operating cost for hotel managers. This device is built in the lock so there is no need for wires or network to connect to a computer. This security system will help the hotels reduce money in the long run. However, the question is how accurate will the finger prints will be if the guest does not have to go by the front desk? Additionally, the biometric fingerprint access system also included a pin code or RFID access that the hotel can provide the guest before arrival to use when they go to their hotel rooms. This way they do not have to stop by the front desk even if their finger prints do not work. "This multi-choice system allows the hotel to offer their guests a product they already know while getting them used to the biometric fingerprint access system." as the article states. The finger prints and access codes are only valid during the stay of the guest, when the duration of the stay is over the finger print or access code will not work on opening the door.

Luxury Hotel Transforms Guest Experience Through Technology - Cisco - 0 views

  • The hotels’ target market consists of highly accomplished, technology-savvy guests who expect the world’s best business tools, room amenities, and business services.
  • They envisioned using advanced video, collaboration, and networking technologies to create a unique and exciting experience throughout the property, delighting leisure travelers and providing world-class collaboration capabilities for business travelers.
  • The venture would require exquisitely coordinated interactions between high-bandwidth wired and wireless networks, multiple business video and collaboration applications, and endpoints such as video displays and IP phones.
  •
The JW Marriott Marquis Miami and Hotel Beaux Arts Miami are three Marriott hotel brands that have been combined as the setting to create a revolutionized guest experience experience with the use of technology throughout the property. Not just technology here and there, but rather technology as the primary provider of the experience. This is evidenced by the conference room amenities: Virtual Meetings by Marriott, mobile video concierge, world's largest video powered by Cisco, digital signage, and wireless IP phones for guest use (which allow guest to order room service, check the weather, special offers, etc.). The goal and vision of the property is to allow guests to experience the advantages of technology to interact with other guets, co-workers, and hotel employees, in hopes that they will enjoy new ways to communicate, as well as have more fun. The hotel has already experienced several benefits and other favourable results: a one-of-a-kind experience for guests, effective marketing of hotel services, operational efficiency from working with one vendor, and increased guest safety thanks to 70 surveillance cameras deployed throughout public areas of the property and monitored by Cisco, who will notify hotel personnel immediately of any emergencies.

Revel Systems Unveils IPad Point-of-Sale Solution For Food Trucks With Twitter Integrat... - 0 views

  • Revel Systems announced the release of an iPad-based restaurant POS system specially designed for food trucks on the go, complete with Twitter integration
  • The food-truck solution is the latest flavor in Revel Systems' revolutionary point-of-sale software line-up, which includes versions for quick-service restaurants (QSR), counter service restaurants and retail.
  • The food truck edition of the POS terminal with the Revel Router is currently available is for $1,999, plus a small monthly software as a service fee.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • The food-truck solution includes Revel Systems' new Revel Router—a "made-for-iPad" device developed by Revel Systems in conjunction with Apple that allows customers to run their iPad POS systems without additional Internet connection hardware or wiring.
  • Instead, Revel Router accesses an Internet connection directly via the user's Verizon 3G- or 4G-enabled Apple iPad, eliminating the need for an Ethernet router or a MiFi 3G hotspot.
  • "Being able to Tweet within the point-of-sale system on the iPad has generated a tremendously enthusiastic response from our food truck restaurant POS solution beta testers, who until now have had to put up with bulky connectivity hardware such as routers and cabling. It's a simple way for them to attract more customers."
  •
Food Trucks no longer have to worry about internet connections, cables and loss of power. This system is on the go and perfect for them and even has a way for them to reach out to customers when they are in a slow time. If food trucks are having a slow day they can just tweet to all of their followers special deals or locations even to attract more business.
  •
Having the iPad POS system in the food trucks is a great idea because the owners no longer have to worry about lots of hardware in the truck just to be able to take payment from customers.
  •
Technology continues to advance in every aspect of the hospitality field even for food trucks businesses. The Revel System has released a new iPad-based restaurant POS system. This system is very convenient for food truck employees. There is no longer need to worry about the hustle and bustle of loose cables and poor router connection. As social media plays an important role in today's day and age the new POS system is equip with Twitter. Food trucks owners can send a tweet out about promotions, discounts, and their current location. This is very much an innovation for food truck businesses.

6 Mega-Trends in Hotel Technology | News | Hospitality Magazine (HT) - 2 views

  • Mobile ubiquity.
  • To meet escalating guest expectations, 54% of hotels will spend more on technology this year, according to HT’s 2016 Lodging Technology Study. Their biggest priorities for technology spending, in order, are: payment security, guest room tech, bandwidth, and mobile engagement
  • Mobile solutions in particular will dominate the list of capital investments this year — six of the top new rollouts have a mobile component, ranging from mobile keys, to mobile payments, to location-based technology (see fig. 2 below). Also high on to-do lists are improving data accessibility and security.

Go Green! I read on an article that Starwood has made strong progress towards reducing their carbon emissions. They have invested in the HCMI (Hotel Carbon Measurement Initiative).
  • Beefing up security.
  • Security is garnering investment particularly as payment becomes increasingly mobile and new non-bank payment vehicles emerge. Providing for more secure payments and data is the top objective driving technology investments for the hotels in HT’s study.
  • Future-proofing networks
  • Fiber, or passive optical LAN, is quickly becoming the standard for new builds and retrofits, either all the way to the room or as part of fiber/copper hybrid networks. According to Corning (www.corning.com) and VT Group (www.vt-group.com), rather than running new cabling every four to five years, hotels can tap fiber’s high capacity to install once and gain huge increases in capacity and reach, since unlike copper, bandwidth is unlimited and does not degrade over distance. A single fiber optic cable can replace separate wiring for WiFi and cellular backhaul, building controls and triple-play networks, freeing up space and increasing performance while enabling parallel redundancy.
  •
I found this article very interesting as it covers some of the next technological changes the hotel industry would see. Hotel companies and property owners are spending lots of money to ensure they are able to satisfy modern day traveler's needs. As technology advances and more and more studies show travelers prefer to use their own mobile devices, companies have to constantly improve their mobile platform. Sooner or later hotels will have mobile keys that work via a phone on the customers phone or tabloid. Features like mobile keys, check-in, and communications via a mobile app will all require significant amount of investments by major hotel chains. All of these new types of feature also require more advanced security to protect hotel stayers while using the hotels' mobile apps. Over the long run the investment will pay off for large hotel companies as they will gain tons of data and data is very powerful and useful. I am interested to see how this affects small-scale motels as the investment in mobile platforms may not be feasible for an independent motel.
  •
This article discusses six of the new upcoming trends in the hospitality industry in regards to technology. The first is mobile ubiquity - meaning the amount of usability of guests using mobile devices to check in, make a reservation, or purchase. The second is integrating mobile data and the integration of such valuable data. Third would be the Enabling of guest room technology, such as on-demand content and room features. Fourth would be Future-proofing networks and ensuring safety from hackers or malwares. Fifth would be beefing up security. Sixth would be energy conservation to save money on wastes and energy consumption.
  •
Future proofing or building a more robust network infrastructure is the backbone and the most important part of any network model. It seems that newer buildings will have an advantage as they will have fiber optic installed as they are constructed which would be cheaper than replacing an entire existing copper network. This trend, will enable companies that have newer hotels to offer more services and meet the technological demand that their customers now expect.

For decades Starwood hotels had been investing in a technology transformation program to move Starwood properties from their old mainframe technology to a more modern reservation system called Valhalla. Valhalla is an all in one system and manages reservations, call center, eCommerce Web, Property management and Rev mgmt systems. One would expect Mariott to migrate their current properties to Starwoods PMS however this was not the case. After the merger Mariott announced that they would be migrating the 1200 acquired Starwood properties to their reservation system. I don't understand why Mariott would do this as this would be a backward move. It's a bit strange because their purchase price for Starwood factored in a $500 million Starwood IP technology value which was not owned by Mariott.

The Importance of Infrastructure: Planning for the Future - 0 views

  • Unlike a commercial building where cabling systems have an economic life of 5 to 10 years, the physical plant of a hotel is much more difficult to change in the future.
  • hotels still require an increasingly sophisticated cable plant.
  • This network complexity should be addressed sooner rather than later in the building process and pre-opening phase.

  • It’s time that hoteliers stopped overlooking the importance of infrastructure, and start ensuring it is addressed during a major renovation or re-development project.
  • It is much more expensive and very difficult to re-wire a hotel in the future, than it is to plan ahead for changes.
  •
The article discusses how the physical plant of a hotel is important to consider during the early phases of building the establishment because it can get much more expensive later on if it is not dealt with from the beginning. The author believed that this simple detail is what separates a prosperous hotel a part from a retired hotel company. They also noted that trying to take care of the physical plant during a remodeling phase or a major renovation project would be a good alternative to ensure that the physical plant is thought out appropriately.

This article discuss how both new software and hardware is being utilized in the hospitality industry to expedite the process of guests checking in and out of hotels. The article is about NORTHWIND, a company well known for having developed "Maestro" a property management software suite that enables hotels, resorts, and multi-property organizations to manage their facilities. Specifically the article mentions how NORTHWIND is introducing "Xpress Check-In" an tablet specific software that will increase the speed and ease with which guests are able to enter and exit the hotel. This goes to show how the company is keeping abreast with the recent and growing trend of portable tablet/touch screen hardware devices. This software and hardware combination enables desk agents to operate away from their desk allowing for more intimate and personalized service with guests. I think the most unique and amazing feature of this system is that it will allow hotel agents to check in and process large groups such as conference attendees quickly and efficiently. The "Maestro Xpress Check-In" system can not only check guests in, but also encode their room key card, as well as process credit card transactions and capture their signature. All of these things can be completed even before conference attendees disembark from the bus and enter the hotel. I believe that hotels who choose to invest and employ technologies like this will distinguish themselves from other establishments because their service will be much better and smoother, both for guests and the hotel. These unique services will also be key in driving revenue and increasing productivity. NORTHWIND is well recognized in the hospitality industry for providing real-time technology solutions that help users control and manage their business effectively.

Maestro, a company specializing in property management and hotel software is launching a new face in property management productivity by introducing the Maestro Ipad Xpress App. With the popularity of tablet computers such as IPads and android platform tablets rising, Northwind has decided to launch a system through Maestro to make the check-in and check-out process in a hotel as simple and efficient as possible. Northwind ultimately hopes that the Xpress check-in app will not only be more efficient for guests but also optimize revenue and productivity in the hotel. The new app allows guests to complete the check-in and check-out process anywhere a wireless signal is available. Lets say for example, a large group of employees are attending an out of state conference and when they arrive at the hotel, there are over fifty of them that have to go through the check-in process. With the Xpress check-in app, these individuals could check in on their way to the hotel and by the time they get there they will save time and effort by not having to wait in line and go through the entire check in process one by one. For this reason the Maestro Xpress Check-In App is perfect for handling large groups of people arriving at the same time. The Xpress app creates a more personalized service for the customer making the entire check-in and check-out process much more convenient for the guest and productive for the hotel.
