Mobile Commerce and Payments: Not Quite Ready For Prime Time? - 0 views

  •
Despite the fact 50 % of guests use their smart phones to book hotels, recent research reveals they are not ready to pay for their rooms after they stay with the same phones. Near Field Communication (NFC) would allow guests to simply wave their phones at a kiosk to check out instantly paying and updating the hotels accounts. Fear of cellphones being stolen are the general apprehensions of this new technology that would eliminate carrying a credit card. After the smart phone market matures hotels airlines and restaurants will be able to take advantage of the swift mobile payment technology.

  •
Hotel system contains various information and personnel privacy related to customers so that it is easy to be stolen or make use of by criminals. "Industry leaders speak openly that data security is a crucial part of running a business". But this issue is becoming more and more important and also take in to consideration in customers' mind. This article pointed out that there are three ways to decrease the threaten of data security which are preparation, response and post-mortem. The preparation is invisible but very significant effort to prevent attack. When a hotel experience a breach, system and employee can react immediately and take a right and quick step to kick the hacker out of system and protect data. And for post-mortem, both leaders and employee should learn something from this kind of event and update all plans and training.

The Pros and Cons of Cloud Computing for Hotels - 0 views

  • starters, automatic scaling can make people extremely lazy. If you’re not paying attention to your usage, you just might get a huge surprise on your next bill. One thing that’s a rising concern is that hackers can run up their victims’ hosting bills. One method that’s being used by hackers is a simple low-level DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service), which won’t take your site down but will keep your server very busy. Since you pay for usage with cloud hosting, your costs can spin wildly out of control. So if you’re using cloud hosting, make sure to pay daily attention to your usage.
  • Your data might not be cloud-worthy. By all means, don't put an application that provides competitive advantage or contains customer-sensitive information in the public cloud. Your application could be too big to scale. The bigger you are, the bigger your IT resource pool. And the bigger your IT resource pool, the less likely it is you'll see any enormous financial advantage in outsourcing to the cloud.
  • Every cloud computing service provider you come across will promise to deliver your demanded services. However, the reality is they provide different levels of quality and services when it comes to actually installing them. Thus, finding a reliable service provider is a tiring and time-consuming job.

  • The Pros and Cons of Cloud Computing for Hotels
  •
This article lists pros and cons of Cloud Computing for Hotels. What is surprising is that Cloud Computing can be costly as opposed to the common belief that Cloud Computing is a great cost saver. According to this article, if your IT resource pool is too big, it is less likely that you'll see any enormous financial advantage in outsourcing to the cloud. In addition, there is a method being used by hackers to increase your Cloud usage significantly and make you end up paying a lot for it. The method is called DDoS(Distributed Denial of Service). Even a low-level of this can keep your server busy and give you an enormous bill. Sure, these problems can be prevented and benefits of Cloud Computing can outweigh them. However, this technology is quite new, you need to think strategically before you pounce on  it.
  •
This article introduced the result of a survey for the adaptation of cloud computing global wise. 68% of the global organizations want to adapt this new tech but 51% have concerns that their old system may not be enough for the adaptation.  Then the article describes the pros and cons with cloud computing and solutions for hoteliers.  The pros are : no need to buy many expensive hardware, lower maintenance expense and software installing and updating fee, Cons: security, which is the biggest concern, redundancy, and other things.

World Travel Market Vision Conference-Florence May 23, 2012 The travel and tourism industry's longer-term prospects are good, delegates were told last week at the World Travel Market (WTM )Vision Conference-Florence. Despite the global financial problems, which continue to impact the industry, Euromonitor International Travel and Tourism Analyst Angelo Rossini predicted the "the next 5 years would look brighter."

This article is good news for all of us in the hospitality industry. There are "growing middle classes and they are hungry for travel." The article suggests that within the next five years people will be looking to vacation on short costs, most likely traveling on short breaks or low-cost holidays. This article also brings attention to the technology aspect in this rapidly growing industry. They say that the technology is very far behind and needs to be updated to better suit people's needs. Overall, even though the tourism industry is headed in the right direction there are still many things that need to be updated on a periodic basis to keep up with the changing times.

Point of Sale Technology: New Developments - 0 views

  • Hotel
  • A hotels Point of Sale (POS) system is vital to the running of the business and crucial to how a hotelier monitors things like sales, bookings and staff performance. Recent advances in technology have helped to revolutionise the hospitality sector, decreasing service times and increasing the efficiency of sales when completing transactions.
  • The growing trend of a new technology called Near Field Communications (NFC) is hoped to eliminate the necessity for customers to carry money or credit/debit cards to pay their bills. This NFC technology allows consumers to use mobile devices to process all their transactions, for instance by swiping their smartphone across a special kiosk at the counter, with all the information sent to a central processing system for payment.
  •
This article was very enlightening on the recent advances of POS technology in the hospitality industry and the new developments that keep evolving. The article presents areas were recent advances have helped to improve the "effectiveness of a business and relationship with their customers". As stated in the article with the use of "cloud-based systems, the latest i-trends and the growth of Near Field Communications", the hospitality industry POS technology will move very far. Three key areas were discussed; "Point of Sale on the move" which referred to using a browser on any mobile device to obtain necessary information while you are on the move or away from the business. The second area was using a POS system on a tablet or smartphone that would be able to provide more useful information than tradition POS systems in a lightweight manner with more flexibility. I can attest to the real need for this advancement because working in an establishment that has the traditional POS systems has proven when there is a problem trouble shooting can be very difficult. A process as simple as getting your technical support team to make changes in your POS system can be a nightmare, when your system does not have updated software. We experienced that issue this week, when technical support attempted to access the system and could not locate the license agreement after hours of searching for a key we found a device that was attached to the printer cable in the back of the CPU. All of the unnecessary time spent on that one event could have been eliminated if some of this new technology was in place. The last area the article referred to is "Marrying POS and NFC". This new development is hoping to eliminate the need for carrying money or credit/debit cards and enable consumers to use mobile devices to process all transactions. I believe this would be very beneficial in the hospitality industry not only from the point credit card fraud but also it eliminate

Visit Baltimore launches 3D map app for city tourists - Baltimore Business Journal - 3 views

  • Ayers Saint Gross used a combination of satellite, GIS and aircraft imaging to create the 3D map, which can be constantly updated as new buildings arise and others are torn down.
  • Ayers Saint Gross is in the process of working with Apple and Android to create smart phone versions of the app, and could not give an estimate of when it would be ready for the public.
  • Not only does it allow tourists to navigate the city, but it also sells the city to potential clients interested in bringing their meetings and events to Baltimore, he said.

  • Potential visitors can search for rooms for conventions, find restaurants near their hotels and see nearby transportation options from the bird’s eye or a street view. Noonan can even create custom virtual tours to showcase local attractions that particular groups might be interested in, allowing new visitors to understand the lay of the land before they’ve set foot on it.
  •
This article introduce a very nice, brand new 3D application that can help many tourists when they arrive, in Baltimore. As useful as the app may be to tourists, it's pretty sad that they have all these lovely features for one city and nowhere else.We can see that from google map to this 3D map, seems like it is a trend that the companies are developing theapplication of navigating tourists. However, I'm glad that they haven't revealed this app to the App Store or Play Store yet for the public because they need to expand their horizons before they even think to release it to the market. But as long as they improve this app and release to the public, it will be great convenience for the tourists.

I highlighted the two passages I found to be most interesting in blue. I read that the system will update it's self every 24 hours but I'm wondering if that would include the forecast and traffic conditions. Does this also offer some type of naviagation device weather it be by car or foot? Baltimore, can be a rather rough city at time. I know that it will high light tourist attractions, convention centers, etc. But will it highlight street names and areas that travelers should stay away from?

Infor a provider for application software has created a special edition of its software to help multiple departments within hotels operate from one application. With this specialized hospitality edition hotels now reduce costs with through this management system, streamline functions in multiple departments. and tools for timely customer service. In addition this system will help in tracking their use of natural resources and use that information to help better manage costs. This system will provide hotel management with the necessary and real time information to help operate on a more efficient basis such as issues with maintenance alerts, guests services, notices on equipment reliability. Although the use of this technology promises to help with efficiency and cut costs to help management the cost of maintaining and updating such an application could be costly. In addition with all of the functions being operated on through the use of one application what are the fail-safe tools in place if such an application were to be compromised or go down. The entire hotel's business can be affected.

Hotel systems weighed down by booking requests - 0 views

  • The ratio has been growing at an average pace of 20% year over year and continues at a steady climb
  • Travelers are increasingly looking for value in their travel experience and continue to do more shopping before booking, meaning the number of information requests is expected to continue rising
  •
In Dallas, hotels are trying to bring in technology to make things easier while bringing in a CRS system has just made it more complicated. Since there are so many online requests for hotel rooms the Central Reservation System cannot necessarily keep up with that which could be problem because if it cannot keep up then it is not going to be in a search for a new guest. InterContinental Hotels Groups is updating their CRS with a newer one that can handle the large amount of requests at one time but there is still a problem of speed. We like to see things happen immediately when we want it done and if it does not happen like that we might decide to leave the page and go somewhere else to book causing the company to lose out business. Before the internet when people needed to book hotel rooms and they went to a travel agent the agent would have to call around to see which property had availability, then find out if they property they wanted had specific rooms and rates they are looking for and then finally book the room at the specified rate. As soon as the internet came along the process became easier because it was all right there except not that much easier because it still could not do everything that we wanted it to.
  •
Central Reservation Systems via the internet are good when they want to be and bad when they want to be. If there is a huge meeting booked last minute in a popular city during peak time there is going to be a huge influx of people trying to book hotels online at the same time and the CRS might not work as people would like it to causing people to get angry and not want to go to that specific hotel.
  •
Central Reservation System is really a very good system which can improve the efficiency and speed of the hotel reservation.

IATA & GDS Companies Butt Heads - 1 views

  • IATA waded into the controversy over the optimal method of distributing ancillary products, claiming that GDSs “are unable to handle the rapidly increasing range of product offerings from airlines.” In an article in its Airlines International magazine, IATA said that “a GDS screen today looks much like a screen from the 1970s.” The article included lengthy quotes from Montie Brewer, former chief executive officer of Air Canada and a long-time critic of GDSs.
  •
In this article, Michele McDonald describes how the IATA Organization which represents thousands of travel agents across the world and GDS Companies are butting head over merchandising capabilities with GDS systems. Travel Agents are starting to feel the impact of technology with GDS systems. The IATA organization describes today's GDS screen much like a screen from the 1970's. The IATA members' main concern is the capability of the system; Brewer a member of the advisory board of Everbread, an air fare shopping company explains how airlines and consumers are becoming more sophisticated with technology and with the outdated GDS's systems consumer trends are being hindered. The major GDS's companies do not agree with the IATA organization, they feel that their systems are adequately able to perform the role. Should GDS's companies switch to more web-based systems allowing travel agents to perform their roles more efficiently? This is probably a question that Sabre, Amadeus, and other companies should keep in mind as technology continues to advance. I also feel that both the airlines and GDS's companies should partner with the workforce; the travel agents who are the frontline to determine what things should be updated if needed.

  • More importantly, a good POS system is capable of improving the efficiency of the F&B operation and increasing the productivity of employees.
  • A good POS system should let you focus on your customers, not your POS system,
  •
This article discusses how new demand of customers within the hospitality industry is driving current point of sale systems such as micros to re-term their systems to focus more on customers. It includes several factors that are potentially driving POS systems to be revolutionized. The possibility of POS systems becoming more "from the palm of your hand" is growing each day as more POS systems are converging with wireless devices. As other outside factors influence hoteliers to emerge and update their POS systems, the development and progress of having the most profitable POS systems requires close examination of what works best for each company. One example the article touched on was the change from regular cashier systems to IPad based interactive systems and interactive kiosks. In addition, the enhancements of POS systems overall seem to be increasing F&B profit-a section of the financial statement that was historically less profitable. As with all technology, It is best to refrain from making a large capital investment into emerging systems, starting slow and monitoring how the bottom line is increasing and specific areas such as Room revenue or F&B revenue is the ideal choice.

Such a great article I forwarded it to my client. Working in the corporate food service industry, my location lacks the technology of a POS system. Yes, we still use a Sharp cash regristar which makes sales tracking nearly impossible. The potential to drive sales with the use of a POS system and other technologies that continue to develop would be of great benefit. A POS system that tracked, sales, comps, discount, high and low seller would be great from the management side but a cashless system or a intergrated CC machine would increase speed of service thus satisfying the customer.
  •
Excellent Article! POS systems are becoming more user friendly than before. The systems allow companies to track revenue and inventory at the same time. The Walt Disney World Resort tested a POS system that allowed hotel guests to simply flash their room key and the charges would go directly into the POS system then PMS. Hotels have added POS systems to spas, recreation locations and retail stores...(http://www.restaurant.org/nra_news_blog/2012/04/pos-systems-must-accommodate-new-secure-payment-technology.cfm).

Theodore your article proves a great point on the benefits of POS technology. Having a POS system adds more value that will cover its initial cost. Handles greater product volumes. Makes complex business logic possible. Provides more management possibilities of your daily operations such as sales tracking, refunds, time clocks, menus, pricing, revenue maximization, etc.Provides advanced functionalities such as reservation and table management for restaurants, hotels, bars, and any business in the food service industry. Realizes enhanced savings with greater efficiency. Delivers better workflow for staff. Improves customer service and increases customer through-put. Easily manage large numbers of customers and groups. Allows restaurant businesses to combine multiple services into a single invoice (hotel room, meals, events, services). Graphical management of store assets such as table, rooms, bar, etc. Delivers superior reporting and analysis features. Streamlines inventory management. Back Office integration. The purpose of POS system is to accommodate your employees and your customers. If you have happy employees this results in customers having a smile. You have to spend money (POS SYSTEM) in order to make money.

To design a website hardware and software tools are needed. A computer with a large hard disk, Random Access Memory to store data, high processing speed and large storage capacity is necessary to be able to process large video files that you would need to put on these websites. with videos, its best to take them yourself so as to lessen the cost of production. Two servers are needed both hardware and software. Microsoft front page is a software needed before constructing the site because it is a website design and management tool that is used to add, rename, delete or move around files. It also contains web pages, graphics, documents and multimedia. A good anti-virus or software is important to have for web design to prevent external threats. Backing up the website should be done through emails, where it can be restored if any problems occur.
