Investing in Hotel Technology- Guest Needs Versus Franchise Demands - 1 views

  • How does a hotel owner follow franchisors brand standards, whilst managing potential conflict with guest needs and ensuring a good return on investment?
  • otel technology is one of the key areas in which conflict between individual owner/operators and franchisors crops up, with both sides very territorial over how much ground (and control) they yield to the other party.
  • By joining a major hotel chain, these individual owners benefit from the brand association they get from being under such a well-known corporate umbrella, broader consumer recognition, plus access to well-established centralised reservation and booking systems.

  • The big franchisors maintain that owners must follow their brand standards to the letter, a situation that inevitably leads to conflict over things like in-room technology. When it comes to investing in hotel technology, owners can be loathe to implement anything that doesn’t offer a good return on investment.
  • hotel owner said
  • “Property exit value is key. No ROI while the asset is in my ownership? No technology project.
  • Around the world, it’s David versus Goliath as franchisors are being challenged as to why certain standards are in place even though, more often than not, these investments have a negligible impact on the ability of the hotelier to bring in additional revenue.
  • While such examples may seem trivial, these are just the tip of the iceberg in the debate currently raging between franchisees and franchisors. Realising the bargaining power that these individual owners have when they speak together with one voice, some of the larger chains like Intercontinental have understood the situation and established owner association meetings in which franchisees can air grievances.
  • An industry forum promoting two-way communication is a step in the right direction and just one tactic among many to address what has become a difficult relationship between two mutually dependant parties.

In the article "Investing in Hotel Technology- Guest Needs Versus Franchise Demands" it talks about how hotel owners follow brand standards while managing potential conflict with guests and are making sure they are getting their moneys worth on this investment. Technology is a huge part of hotels today, everything is done from the Internet and it even helps employees organize all of their information in an easy, user friendly way. Over the past years many hotel owners have opted to become franchisees of big name industries. "By joining a major hotel chain, these individual owners benefit from the brand association they get from being under such a well-known corporate umbrella, broader consumer recognition, plus access to well-established centralized reservation and booking systems." When hotel owners opt to become franchises of these bigger hotels they also give up their right to make certain decisions for their own hotel. Although this could be a downfall for the owner, "these investments have a negligible impact on the ability of the hotelier to bring in additional revenue," which is something that the hotel needs help with. Overall, when small hotels opt out and decide to become franchisees of big name hotels like the Hilton, it has both its advantages and disadvantages.

  •
Lawrence Cohen, an Executive Consultant and Hospitality Group Leader recently examined the conflicts of interest that hotel owners face when hiring third party management companies. According to Cohen, owing a hotel requires both strategic and operational decisions to be made in real time. The problem occurs when real estate owners go from owning commercial property to owning hotels and are not used to making decisions on a daily basis. As a result, the most critical daily decisions that determine the success of the hotel do not fall into the hands of ownership but rather to a third party management company. These third party relationships may result in hotel management staff being loyal only to the management company rather than the hotel itself. Hotel owners could benefit by building a team with experience in the hospitality industry and hiring individuals loyal to the owner.

3 Reasons Why Now Is the Time to Upgrade Your POS | Hospitality Technology - 0 views

This article introduces three reasons to upgrade POS system. Most restaurant owners think traditional POS system is good enough to use because they already used to the system and it has not bothered their business seriously. Even though there are some malfunction problems on POS machine, they just chose to keep using them. However, below three reasons support why restaurant owners need to upgrade POS system. First, owners sometimes neglect small hardware malfunctions such as fuzzy monitors, printers, or connectivity issue. Yet, it will not be fixed automatically and it might cause the worst scenario which affects business negatively. Not only this reason but also the advantages of cloud-based POS system can give more efficiency and safety. By easily replacing the hardware in the event of damage or failure, information can be stored safely. Second, upgraded POS provides the unified system. Even though it still needs third-party apps, these resources are well unified into the core POS software and owners can operate system seamlessly based on user-friendly, and on-brand manual. Third, it is a security issue. Traditional POS system requires simply login/password combination, but advanced system can be protected with stronger security system such as fingerprint scanner or ID card logins. Therefore, important business information can be secured safely and it can prevent the possibility employee accidentally change key settings or information. To sum up, customers demand is changing fast and technology is developing fast to meet the new trend, so it is the time for restaurant owners to check their POS system and update it when it is needed.

New software called Ipet has been launched in 2011. The software gives the pets' owners the ability to interact with their animals while at work. Ipet consists of a video camera, remote-controlled arm with a kitty-toy and software which allow the toy to dance and jiggle. This software allows pet owner to have controlled of their cats or dogs. Since as humans, animals also need companionship and love,  I think it's a great idea to develop this software because  it give pets owners who works long hours , the ability to play  virtually with their animal , and also making sure the animal is eating and well during their absence. This software also has its negative side because if the owners spend too much hours interacting with their pets while at work, their performance at work will be less efficient and may cause the company profit to decrease.

Accounting is often seen as a necessary evil something that is just a fact of business, however, accounting can make ort break a business, having a reliable system to aid in the process can be vital to a company.
  • “That kind of accounting is typically not done by a management company, so you have this gap,”

in particular when there isa management company it is important that the books are kept clean, and open

It's interesting to see a human side of accounting, it is not often that we get the opportunity to see this side and we see accounting as just something else.
  • You can’t do accounting in a bubble. You can’t sit in an office with no relation to the business and do the accounting. Hotels can get complicated. Sometimes you have a simple LLC and it’s easy enough. But when you start getting into REIT structures, there’s an operating lease to account for; somebody needs to read that agreement, understand how it works, and get all the expenses in the right set of books.
    • herzencortes

This is what accounting should be getting involved in operations and seeing where the costs are, where the revenue streams are and getting a grasp on the business
  • First of all, there’s the boring stuff: they’re in compliance. We get their audits done and they don’t have any more issues. They file tax returns on time and quickly. They’re not at risk of REIT non-compliance because everything’s in the right place.

Are digital menus the way to go? - 0 views

  • When it comes to menu boards, going high-tech isn’t always the right choice. Whether it’s digital screens or old-school chalkboards, the decision goes beyond what looks pretty
  • Though digital has its perks, not all operators want to go high-tech.
  •
This article highlights how digital menus can help some restaurants, but at the end of the day, the concept and the hefty investment are not for all restaurant owners. The usage of digital menus can provide customers a more clear view with the menu and it's easy to adjust it to coordinate with POS systems. Restaurant owners also have the benefit of taking items that are not available of the menu within minutes, preventing many customers the trouble of wanting something they cannot have. On the other hand, some restaurant owners just simply do not have the money for the investment and they also do not believe in they will capitalize on the ROI.
