Guest Column: How Distribution Systems Are Like Seat Belts - Business Travel News - 0 views

My article this week is about how GDS (Global Distribution Systems) can be compared to a seatbelt. The author opens the article discussing the main reasons we still continue to use seatbelts; even though they aren't the most comfortable or fashionable items to use, they still do their jobs in saving our lives when it comes to a collision of some sort. The author is in favor of GDS and makes the claim that like seatbelts, the GDS may not be the most up-to-date or may not appear to be as nice as other local systems to each individual airline, but they get the job done and there are no other systems out there like it that we know of (no other systems that do everything he GDS system does that is). The main topic of discussion that the article is concerned with is the recent decision made by the company Lufthansa to start charging its customers an additional surcharge for using GDS systems instead of going through its own system. The author clearly makes it know that she doesn't believe Lufthansa when they say they are charging this additional surcharge because GDS is the most expensive channel to go through. "Because there's no reason to think that an airline should expect to distribute its products without any cost, Lufthansa's recent gambit seems more of a tactic for increasing lagging direct distribution... Its strategy seems to rest in shifting distribution costs to corporate buyers" claims Rose, the author of the article. The author also points out some of the draw backs of using agency portals, the main reason being that a customer cannot compare rates of other competitors and that agency portals cannot handle high volume transactions like the GDS can. It is also made known that there are costs that come with other channels as well, like the prices you pay for building airline websites and keeping them updated. The author concludes that "Given the history of negotiations between airlines and GDSs, it's impossible to know whether Lufthansa is using DCC as

Technology in the Hospitality Industry - Highlights from Deloitte's 2017 Outlook &#8211... - 0 views

The innovation of information technology is a trend in the hospitality industry. Information technology can improve market growth. Investment in technology can be exemplified by restaurants' expenditure on IT. One chart showed that there are 26% restaurant investment between 1%-2% of revenue on IT. 25% invest between 2%-3% of revenue on IT. Only 6% investment greater than 6% of revenue on IT. IT investment of portion takes really low in all different kinds of the sector of investment. But in my opinion, IT investment is necessary for the hospitality industry. It deserves to invest more. Because people rely on technology information and product more and more.

What Are the Accounting Procedures in the Hospitality Industry? | Bizfluent - 1 views

  • Recording Revenue
  • For both restaurants and hotels, revenue is earned when the meal or the hotel stay occurs. It is important to note that reservations often include a deposit for the first night's stay.
  • Payments received for deposits are considered deferred revenue until they are earned.

  • Costs of Sales
  • Common operating expenses in the hospitality industry are rent, insurance and non-client service salary expenses.
  • Operating Expenses
  • Non-guest and patron costs of the company are reflected in the company's operating expense accounts.
  • Major costs in the hospitality industry include costs of food and labor. Food costs, depending on the type of restaurant or resort, can be nearly half of a company's expenses. Costs of sales should be recorded in line with revenue recognized.
  • Capital Purchases
  • Industrial linen washers, stove tops, mixers and computers are all viewed as capital expenditures. These items, which benefit more than one accounting period, are recorded with a debit to fixed assets and a credit to cash at the time of purchase. Over the useful life of the equipment the item is depreciated.
  • The accumulated depreciation and the fixed asset account offset each other on the company's financial statements, so the equipments' value is always reported as cost less accumulated depreciation.
  •
Not everyone may not familiar with the accounting journal entries that happened in restaurants and hotels since food sales and staying at a hotel are not quite the same as normal goods being sold in a retail sore. In this article, the author has introduced the accounting records and record journal entries which restaurants and hotels set to keep track of business transactions. The whole process includes four main parts: recording revenue, costs of sales, operating expenses, and capital purchases.

Going Green: An Eco-Friendly Hotel Saves Money | Reliable Water - 1 views

  • The two top drivers of any hotel business are to bring money in and keep money from going out. Right now, there’s a way to kill two birds with one stone. Featuring an eco-friendly agenda attracts guests and cuts costs. Guests feel good about staying at an eco-friendly hotel because they like your company giving back to the community.
  • If you have the economic clout and capital, consider investing in solar panels on your roof. These cut down on your power expenditures, which are often between 4-6% of revenue. If your building is large enough, you can even sell back some of your excess energy for energy credits from your local power provider.
  • Las Vegas is known for its conspicuous consumption, but even their high rollers are coming around to saving the environment. Several Las Vegas buildings have been LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified by the U.S. Green Building Council. Casinos like the Venetian and the Encore recycle food waste, make sure their HVAC systems hit high standards, and keep valuable water from being wasted.

Going green not only helps the environment, but it invests in communities and the environment.  Many guests are looking for places to stay that offer more green trends.

Single domestic GDS platform, better aircraft utilisation help Air India cut expenses -... - 0 views

I think this is an interesting read about a smaller airline that ended up saving money by switching to only GDS ticketing. Their largest profit margins are found in domestic but have kept only their most popular flights. I think that this is an interesting way of maximizing profits but i think it would only work because they do not have a fully automated system. If they tried to expand their airline, i bet they would run into bigger problems with GDS.
  •
This article demonstrates the significance of GDS in cutting cut the operation costs in the airline industry, and thus, improves profitability. The article explains that Air India solved its financial problems by implementing GDS. The use of GDS in domestic ticketing helped the company to reduce its expenditure and earn more revenue. Thus, this is an effective method that modern airlines can use to increase their profit margins.

This article was very interesting because it shows how the maintenance of the hospitality facilities can really impact a business. We learned in this article that insufficient maintenance can render a lower profit for an investor or the owner regardless whether they want to sell the hotel or not later. We learned that proper upkeep reduces the expense of improvement projects. What can help run a sustained well-run hospitality operation is a preventative program. The only thing that can help you control your maintenance budget is a preventative maintenance program that can help you calculate when to replace carpeting, air conditioner, etc. Meeting up with the hotel supervisors repeatedly allows facility managers to really have a good evaluation on maintenance issues.

I like you opinion that is scalablility. It needs inclination probably. In technology field many Cloud computings are cooperating with estimations. It needs more view points to prove that it's a strength for Cloud computing. According to Cloud computing methods, some chances based on one register matching to one password are possible. I think it's a fresh era to talk about many computers operating together to consider whether some jobs for related people could work together. Thinking about more sensitive site of cloud network. They are efficient in bank running. I think it's a relative reason to help people to know more about scalability in Cloud computing hospitality area. To make it more appearing to customers, the manager should take a purchase options on the view side that I love it. It's multi task. It's enterprising. According to passages, many opinions could be choosing from tabs due to period and seasons. I want to make sure about scalability that clients and customers are good enough for them to make more multiple options to take a preference look. It's financial economic computing assistance too maybe according to cost I think. In words, I think technology should keep scalability to let other clients and customers to put favors on it. No matter Sundays or cruise days.

This article discusses how cloud computing is already taken into affect in the hotel industry. They used examples such as mobile check-ins using the online system. I can vouch for this because in my current hotel we use the mobile key service and this creates a contactless check in process. On our end of the stick we process the credit card on file and check them in and email the guest a welcome letter and advising they may use the mobile key to enter their room. This has benefited customer service experience especially with COVID still being a conflict in our industry. The cloud computing caters to the need of new access as this article states.

Choosing the right IT and cloud services provider post-Covid: A guide - Cloud Computing... - 1 views

  • Now, as most economic indicators begin to trend positive, companies are once again ramping up their IT projects. Long term solutions are necessary at the scale required for sustained operations and cost effectiveness.
  • In this article, we look at three options – IT consulting firms, IT outsourcing companies, and cloud systems integrators
  • There’s also the reality that many of the larger consultancies really aren’t positioned to efficiently or cost effectively help organisations implement necessary IT strategies. Their areas of expertise lie in assurance services, taxation, management consulting, advisory, actuarial, corporate finance and legal services, to name a few.
  • ...12 more annotations...
  • They may have the staff to take on something like a cloud migration or cloud-native application development project. But technology implementation is not a strategic part of their business, so they aren’t necessarily eager to take on these types of projects — particularly if they aren’t of a scale that would allow them to make a sizable profit.
  • They have to rely on proven, repeatable methodology to remain efficient — even if it’s at the expense of better project outcomes for their customers.
  • Companies that specialise in IT outsourcing aren’t faring much better than the big consultancies. While they may be more cost effective than a large professional services provider or consultancy, many potential clients are becoming hesitant about working with them.
  • That’s not to say there still isn’t a place for the large technology consulting firms or IT outsourcing companies. But for companies that want the flexibility, scalability and cost benefits that cloud services provide, working with a company specialising in cloud technologies – as a true, long-time strategic business partner, rather than just a point-in-time technical resource – may be the optimal solution.
  • A viable option may be to go with a mid-sized company that specialises in technology implementation — particularly in the areas of cloud migration and cloud-native app development.
  • Cloud systems integrators are able to be more innovative than larger companies that have no wiggle room for experimentation or exploring new methodologies.
  • These companies develop solutions that can meet current requirements and adapt as those new requirements emerge. For many, their work for a customer is just the beginning of a much longer partnership that will evolve to help that customer continually leverage cloud technologies to meet changing needs.
  • However, many of the cloud-centric companies have chosen to focus their efforts on specific platforms, such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Microsoft, enabling them to gain familiarity with and expertise in the many tools and services those particular platforms offer. They can effectively leverage those resources to help their customers implement targeted, effective solutions.
  • Like the large technology consulting and professional services companies, the IT outsourcing companies also tend to rely on standard processes that can be repeated over and over to keep costs down. There’s no room for innovation.
  • Pandemic or not, hiring a big-name IT consulting firm often comes with an equally big price tag. Forgoing work with these higher-priced companies or simply cancelling projects reduces expenditures.
    • vanessavioli

Cost is something that is a very serious part of any technological consideration by management. Will that investment be worth it in the long run and pay for itself. Smaller businesses cannot afford a misstep.
  • Few, if any, industries escaped the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. Even in the technology sector, where change is a normal part of business, many professional services and technology consulting firms struggled to cope with the disruption.
    • vanessavioli

COVID-19 was/is the ultimate disruptor. It affected every single industry, but affected the hospitality industry in the most profound ways.
  • Yet another potential downside: larger firms tend to be less agile than their smaller counterparts. While they sell innovation to their customers, they are often too big and cumbersome to embrace the new ways of working and thinking that they promote on the consulting side.
    • vanessavioli

It is interesting that it actually takes larger businesses to adapt to new technology, however once again it must come down to cost. Revamping a large company technologically is extremely costly and a very long complicated project.
  •
This article provides insight on three various types of IT providers and there methodologies. It definitely emphasizes the benefits of specialized companies that focus on cloud computing as their IT service and business model and their ability to b=continually adapt to the changing environment and their desire to create long term relationships. It also talks about how larger IT companies are more focused on strategy rather than implementation of systems. It also talks about how the larger IT companies are much more focused on their own profit than providing services to the client and how cheaper off shore IT companies basically provide the same services at a lesser quality

As many cars are embracing smart features, Ford an American vehicle is implementing the smart feature as well, at one point on star was prevalent however applications have emerged
  • Amazon's popular Alexa voice assistant is about to hitch a ride in a lot more Ford vehicles. On Thursday, the automaker announced upcoming over-the-air software updates will bring Alexa to 700,000 vehicles this year. Millions of other vehicles will gain access in the coming years after Ford inked a deeper "strategic engagement" with Amazon for the next six years.
  • The strategy includes the possibility of releasing Alexa skills (Alexa's equivalent of apps) specific to Ford vehicles. Maybe Alexa will be able to flick on Ford's BlueCruise hands-free driving system. That'd be pretty cool. For now, though, the goal is to simply put the voice assistant into Ford vehicles via "Power Ups," as Ford calls its over-the-air software updates.

As we look at capital expenditures in technology vs income we see that many vehicles are implementing apps. On star was thriving at one point and available in many American made cars however due to the sudden fall off, other replacements have come up. Ford has now emerged to put in place amazon Alexa in over 700,000 of their vehicles. this will offer an Alexa skill that coincides with the vehicles smarts features and offer a much easier use of car adjustments and car controls for many ford owners.

The Different Types of Cloud Computing and How They Differ - 0 views

  • clouds, in the tech sense, are incredibly versatile
  • Cloud computing still relies upon the same physical server hardware that forms the backbone of any computer network. The difference is that cloud architecture makes the processing power and storage capacity of that hardware available over the internet.
  • Cloud deployment describes the way a cloud platform is implemented

  • , how it’s hosted, and who has access to it.
  • A completely on-premises cloud may be the preferred solution for businesses with very tight regulatory requirements,
  • The great advantage of a public cloud is its versatility and “pay as you go” structure that allows customers to provision more capacity on demand.
  • On the downside, the essential infrastructure and operating system of the public cloud remain under full control of the cloud provider
  • Public clouds typically have massive amounts of available space, which translates into easy scalability
  • A cloudbursting model uses the public cloud’s computing resources to supplement the private cloud, allowing the company to handle increased traffic without having to purchase new servers or other infrastructure.
  • less economical model than the public cloud
  • private clouds lack the versatility of public clouds
  • Simply put, hybrid clouds combine public clouds with private clouds
  • The primary advantage of a hybrid cloud model is its ability to provide the scalable computing power of a public cloud with the security and control of a private cloud
  • A misconception about both colocation and the cloud is that they’re an “either-or” investment. As mentioned, the two can be deployed together as part of a hybrid cloud model, enabling more streamlined application management
  • it can be cost effective, though the initial expenditure for the private cloud should be considered
  • work with a service provider who has significant experience in the the hybrid cloud model as there are potential performance and security risk inherent to the need for the two different servers (public and private) to communicate and share data.
  • Although not as commonly used as the other three models, community clouds are a collaborative, multi-tenant platform used by several distinct organizations to share the same applications.
  • scalability is a benefit
  • system remains highly flexible,
  • The shared storage and bandwidth can create issues with prioritization and performance as servers adjust to demands
  • In some cases, a single public cloud isn’t enough to meet an organization’s computing needs. They turn instead to multi-clouds, a more complex hybrid cloud example that combines a private cloud with multiple public cloud services
  • IaaS is the most comprehensive and flexible type of cloud service available. Essentially, it provides a completely virtualized computing infrastructure that is provisioned and managed over the internet.
  • Situated a bit higher up the cloud computing pyramid is PaaS
  • PaaS provides the framework needed to build, test, deploy, manage, and update software products
  • SaaS is a fully-developed software solution ready for purchase and use over the internet on a subscription basis
  • If controlling the environment is essential, as are tight security regulations because of your industry, private cloud solutions offer both security and control.
  • when looking for a cloud services provider, you want to choose a company that not only knows, but understands your business or industry
  • The bottom line is this: if you are in the market for a colocation partner, you want to make your research process as exhaustive as possible. Consider all possible scenarios, all possible needs, and how your provider can meet or exceed your service expectations while partnering with you for succes
