    Choice Hotels has been a industry leader in the cloud PMS movement. They identified the opportunity to create their own platform 10 years ago when cloud was barely on the radar and have now successfully distributed it to 5,500 of their properties. Unique functionality built into the system is internet redundancy via cellular data plan, company-wide campaign pop-up messages to staff, interface to Pegasus and revenue management through predictive analytics. The platform has been so successful that, in response to inquiries from other companies who wanted to use Choice's proprietary system themselves, they created an additional revenue stream by establishing a separate company that sells and creates custom cloud PMS systems. One advantage pointed out is that managers no longer need to be on property to access and make changes to their PMS. While this is hugely beneficial to the majority of the industry (who already work long hours and visit the property on their day off), there may be some who take advantage of the situation. If this becomes the case, less oversight at the property means that operations has the potential to slip. It doesn't seem that this is a concern for Choice Hotels but it should be considered.

    Hey all, here is something interesting I found. It is an article that talks about E-waste and how it is being dealt with in the United States. Over the course of the last decade, many people have come to the realization that electronics, such as televisions and computers could be potentially harmful if not disposed of in the right way. States like Maine have implemented laws, where it is mandatory for people to recycle their products. The laws are intended to prevent a torrent of toxic waste and outdated electronic equipment. The article states, throughout the entire nation an average of 99.1 million televisions sit in people's closets and are unused. Places like Washington State have responded well to the problem. Over the course of a few years, Washington has dumped almost 15 million pounds of E-Waste. Other States Like New York and New Jersey, have banned throwing televisions in regular trash. It is mandatory to take them to a recycling station.

With the rapid rate at which technology is being updated, electronic waste will just continue to grow. I am glad that laws are being formed to cope with this tremendous issue. I agree with this statement from the article: '"We think it is unreasonable that an individual industry be designated as trash collector," Mr. Fannon said.' I agree with Fannon's view that local governments should help with recycling electronic waste. I agree because something definitely needs to be done, but the responsibility should not be placed on one group.

      This article circles back to our discussion board about issues in the hospitality industry. 200,000 hotels is not nearly enough and I am certain that there are many more. The idea is wonderful; however, if this is not backed up by the government, then it would not be created as an industry standard. The big companies, such as Marriott, Hilton, etc would most definitely be part of this initiative; however, what about the smaller motels, bed and breakfasts, etc? If there is a fee associated with this (which there would probably be because the database needs to be maintained) then smaller less profitable ones will opt out. - I hope other classmates have updates.

  • Brian Coffelt of Business Data Systems made a cold call to Paddock, shortly after Paddock had taken over the Wilderness Inn. Much of Business Data Systems' business comes from cold calls and referrals. For the past 12 years, the company has installed hospitality POS systems for restaurants in several states, including New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New Jersey.
  • According to Coffelt, adding receipt printers at the bar and in the kitchen helped speed order processing. The printers also tracked food and drink coming out of the kitchen and the bar. This eliminated any chance of theft or, in the case of alcohol, overpouring. According to Coffelt, the installation of and training for the new system were uneventful. People showed up to an empty island with no food, water or basic shelter. Clearly the festival was poorly executed and planned and it was canceled. There was a lack of infrastructure on the island to provide safety for the guests along with a lack of proper water systems and transportation. The event planners had not had a proper back up plan for storms that could potentially hit the island (which happened) which completely set back everything. Many viewed this Fryre Festival as a major scam and were extremely upset, but what it turned out to be was a poorly planned and executed music event.
