U.S. National Debt Clock : Real Time - 3 views

It's not strictly speaking history-related however most of us also teach social studies or something similar and it was just too cool to pass up. An excellent way of demonstrating to students the issues regarding the current Western economic model and the Chimerica conundrum. Scary.

Internet Global History Sourcebook - 7 views

I'm still looking for quality source sites relating to indigenous history and although this site is still under construction it looks like it will be a valuable contribution. Blessed be Paul Halsall and his History Sourcebooks project, the bane of textbook tyranny everywhere!

Site looks well-maintained and the games seem to be of a good quality. I think it's free, too. That's always a bonus.

Indian Ocean History - 8 views

An excellent resource for teaching the history of the Indian Ocean Basin. It has some great flash-based maps where you can click on funky-looking icons and get some detailed historical information. Very Gen-Y friendly and there seemed to be some quality history in there. The whole site too is based on a historiographic approach of understanding (and teaching) history as organised around oceans rather than continents or civilisations or periods. An interesting approach I think, especially for showing historical connections between otherwise distinct peoples.

CMCU Workshops - 12 views

Is primarily focussed on Islam and religion however it has a wealth of general history links and lesson plans for history teachers. The lesson plans seem quite up-to-date in their pedagogic strategies and should be useful to the teacher who's looking for a 'planning-lite' solution to their lesson delivery needs. (I promised one of the people who designed the site that I'd give it a plug. It really is good.)

Subject:History - Wikibooks, collection of open-content textbooks - 9 views

Still into the wikis. This collection doesn't show evidence of much development yet, however it could grow into a quality collection in future. Some of the topics are a little obscure. 'A History of Nejd'. Not quite sure on that one.

Has plenty of links to sites with historical images; very useful when creating resources for classes. I'm into Wikimedia stuff tonight. Sorry if you hate it.

Portal:History - Wikiversity - 4 views

Wikis in general tend to arouse some strong reactions in teachers (I guess we've all seen what Google and Wikipedia have done to research in many history and social studies classrooms...) yet I thought some people might find this useful, especially towards the start of the year when you look back over your units. Which of course we all do. Of course.

Has a rather extensive collection of historical stamps available online.

Digital History - 11 views

Has a funky graphic interface connected to different types of resources to do with digital history. From what I can tell this is a bit of a buzzword (term?): 'digital history'. It seems if you're doing anything educational online put 'digital' in front of it and you're in the 21st century. Simple, really...

Has access to online history scholarship, although by the looks of it some of the materials there can only be accessed after you've paid membership.

Freely available; you can download individual articles as pdfs. Looks like they take submissions too.

I hadn't realised how much full text stuff is available from ERIC otherwise I would have added it sooner. Just do a full-text advanced search for 'history' and Bob's your uncle. It's always good to know what the smart people are saying we should be doing. I don't know about you though, but sometimes those smart people strike me as a little stupid...

Excellent collection of history sites well-organised under a diverse range of topics. Yet another brilliant open-source history resource provided by the good people at George Mason University. They rock!

Looks like it might be useful in a computer room, having the students work through the site for all or part of a lesson. It takes them through the research process as they try to reconstruct the historical circumstances of Martha Ballard through primary documents. Quite cool.

Raid on Deerfield: the Many Stories of 1704 - 3 views

Looks a bit more like a WebQuest type of site rather than a source collection, however has a timeline and some images. Seeings there is so little on the topic of New World colonisation generally I decided to add it.
