Jamestown and the Virginia Experiment The Virtual Jamestown Archive is a digital research, teaching and learning project that explores the legacies of the Jamestown settlement and "the Virginia experiment." As a work in progress, Virtual Jamestown aims to shape the national dialogue on the occasion of the four hundred-year anniversary observance in 2007 of the founding of the Jamestown colony.

There are a couple of pages on this site which might be useful for history teachers in challenging us to reflect on our practice. I don't know about you, but too often I get so caught up in the bureaucratic paperwork and day-to-day of teaching I forget to reflect on the big picture of what teaching history is all about...

Scholars of ancient history and IT experts at Stanford University have collaborated to create a novel way to study Ancient Rome. ORBIS, a geospatial network model, allows visitors to experience the strategy behind travel in antiquity. (Find a handy tutorial for using the system on the Web and YouTube). The ORBIS map includes about 750 mostly urban settlements of the Roman period

Much of the content on this website has been specially tailored for a secondary school audience. It aims to teach students about the process of archaeology and about the Geometric settlement of Zagora (c 900-700 BCE) on the Greek Aegean island of Andros.

This site rocks. A collection of excellent sources very well-organised and covering each period of US history since British settlement right up to the twenty-first century.

Looks a bit more like a WebQuest type of site rather than a source collection, however has a timeline and some images. Seeings there is so little on the topic of New World colonisation generally I decided to add it.

Maps, newspaper articles, sketches and official documents related to that 'other' first English settlement in the Americas.

Something to put alongside the towering pile of Mayflower Compact lessons. Much more detailed, pertinent and worthwhile, this short record with excerpts from laws, ordinances and listings will open the Plymouth to student's understanding in ways that Compact won't.
