Digital Past is a digitization initiative undertaken by libraries, historical societies, museums, and other cultural venues throughout Illinois in partnership with the North Suburban Library System (NSLS) in Wheeling, Illinois. It began in 1998 with a grant from the Illinois State Library and has become a popular resource for researchers of all ages and interests including schoolchildren, genealogists, historians, authors, producers, and special interest groups. Digital Past contains collections from over 40 institutions of varying topics and formats including over 136,000+ records.

The Library's collection of more than 500 broadsides is one of the largest recorded and the first to be digitized in its entirety. The examples digitized here span the years 1707 to 1891 and include accounts of executions for such crimes as arson, assault, counterfeiting, horse stealing, murder, rape, robbery, and treason. Many of the broadsides vividly describe the results of sentences handed down at London's central criminal court, the Old Bailey, the proceedings of which are now available online at http://www.oldbaileyonline.org.

The British School at Rome Archive (BSR) thanks to the Getty Foundation, made freely available digital copies of the John Bryan Ward-Perkins photographic collection. A website of the "BSR digital collections was created to present not only the photographic material (Photographs) but also other types of resources which follow into different categories: Maps, Prints, Documents, Postcards, Drawings, Paintings and Manuscripts". But "the majority of the digital images displayed on the website are represented by the photographic prints and negatives from unique historic collections, including calotypes, glass and film negatives, slides and lantern slides."

Seems to focus more on the history of the British School at Rome rather than Roman history. Should revise the tags at this point but this summer heat here in Queensland is making me lazy...

The Internet Archive BookServer, A Future for Books, distributed lending & vending on the internet is an Open Web for Books project for worldwide distribution of e-books. BookServer with more than 1,5 millions books is, today, one of the biggest digital libraries offering and sharing free access to digital books both in PDF and ePub format, the latest recommended by the International Digital Publishing Forum a free and open e-book standard with extension ".epub".

The LA84 Foundation has undertaken an ambitious project to convert portions of its traditional library collection to digital format. The growing digital collection now contains more than 300,000 pages, stored in over 75,000 PDF files.

Has a funky graphic interface connected to different types of resources to do with digital history. From what I can tell this is a bit of a buzzword (term?): 'digital history'. It seems if you're doing anything educational online put 'digital' in front of it and you're in the 21st century. Simple, really...

Great place to start your search for digitized collections/archives. These collections are housed at historical and academic institutions of all kinds, and contain primary sources that can include original historical documents, images, audio, artifacts, etc.

A list of digital collections run out of Michigan State University Libraries. Lots of farming stuff, for some reason.

No information on how much is there, but going on the quality of the other source sites provided by Harvard Libraries it should be quite extensive.

Couldn't agree more. They reckon their collection will grow to over 10 million texts. An electronic Alexandria. It's the ability to sort the wheat from the chaff that makes Diigo such a powerful tool. Especially now it looks so sexy!

The Lincoln Archives Digital Project started in 2002 with a simple idea for a vast undertaking: to digitize all federal records that exist from the administration of Abraham Lincoln.  Over 6,000 documents are currently online and over half a million documents are scanned and in the process of being placed online.  People from around the world now have access to the documents of  Abraham Lincoln's administration, including Civil War records.

As my son marvels at the battle diaries, postcards, letters and photographs, and scrupulously unfolds war maps depicting the strategic battlelines in the fields of Gallipoli and the Somme, he surrenders to the pleasure of discovering history by his own hands. The touch, the sight, the smell of these items, each tells a story of their own and he takes his time in absorbing it all. Then in true Gen Y form, he reaches for the digital camera and begins to photograph the maps, crests, war pay books, menus of Christmas dinners - detailed and digital proof that he has, at last found, what he was searching for.
