Strategy of the Civil War. The advantages and disadvantages of the North and South in the American Civil War.

In his study of people who find satisfaction with their lives, Harvard psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi defines as autotelic those who are happiest when they are absorbed in complex activities. By focusing on tasks and outcomes that stretch their skills, these young people are more likely to grow into contented adults. The most significant factor for autotelic development is what Csikszentmihalyi terms attentional capacity.

Interviews with 17 great history teachers. What an excellent idea! The most I have ever learnt about teaching was from watching exceptional teachers, so this should be useful.

In these interviews distinguished teachers share their strategies and techniques. Good teaching is more often honored in rhetoric than reality. And great teachers are generally known locally within their own schools, but less often to a larger group of national colleagues. Our goal in this section is, in part, to identify and honor those people who have taught with excellence, dedication, and distinction.

The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) electronic reading room of the American Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) offers several primary source collections for the study of Central and Eastern Europe during and after the Cold War period. The FOIA Electronic Reading Room web site was established by the CIA "to provide the public with an overview of access to CIA information, including electronic access to previously released documents." Direct web access to the following collections is now possible: # The Soviet and Warsaw Pact Military Journals is a PDF collection of "sensitive Soviet and Warsaw Pact military journals from 1961 to 1984 providing a view into Warsaw Pact military strategy". # Preparing for Martial Law: Through the Eyes of Colonel Ryszard Kuklinski is "a captivating collection of over 75 documents concerning the planning and implementation martial law in Poland from mid-1980 to late 1981. The collection release coincided with a CIA symposium honouring Colonel Ryszard Kuklinski, a member of the Polish Army General Staff and the source of the documents."

Seems to focus especially on the Cold War. Definitely one for the conspirary theorists.

Scholars of ancient history and IT experts at Stanford University have collaborated to create a novel way to study Ancient Rome. ORBIS, a geospatial network model, allows visitors to experience the strategy behind travel in antiquity. (Find a handy tutorial for using the system on the Web and YouTube). The ORBIS map includes about 750 mostly urban settlements of the Roman period

Homefront America in WW II A Document Based Question by Peter Pappas This lesson improves content reading comprehension with an engaging array of source documents - including journals, maps, photos, posters, cartoons, historic data and artifacts. It is framed around essential questions that link the past and present and invite students to reflect on parallel developments in contemporary America.

I've got a new boss these days and she's getting us to use graphic organisers and reading strategies and such things. I was sceptical at first, but now I'm a convert. Do many people use graphic organisers in class?

I use them for thinking maps, to show how concepts and ideas are related, as flow charts when necessary, as a way to show comparisons and contrasts and as a way to show umbrella terms and then related terms.

I'm definitely a convert. I now spend the first half of each lesson going through the content and the second half skills-building using graphic organisers, summarising, etc.

Is primarily focussed on Islam and religion however it has a wealth of general history links and lesson plans for history teachers. The lesson plans seem quite up-to-date in their pedagogic strategies and should be useful to the teacher who's looking for a 'planning-lite' solution to their lesson delivery needs. (I promised one of the people who designed the site that I'd give it a plug. It really is good.)
