These are a set of out-of-print guides made by the NYC Board of Education in 1993-1994. They are full of primary sources, short text selections and activities which many teachers have found very useful. Although designed for 7th and 8th grade they can be modified for high school and elementary school. Many teachers have used these over the last 17 years to help them develop their lessons. They are large files so they will take a few minutes to open. Note that both sets follow the same format but the 8th grade guides were done with a modern text style and therefore "looks" much better.

Com 6 anos de idade, Ruby tornou-se voluntária, pelos seus pais, para participar de um procedimento de integração em uma escola de "All-Whites". O acontecimento foi proporcionado pela NAACP - Associação Nacional para o Progresso de Pessoas de Cor -, tornando Ruby a primeira aluna afro-americana em um escola no sul, chamada "William Frantz Elementary School", de Nova Orleans. Sem dúvida, em palavras o acontecimento tem seus méritos. Contudo, o que pensar se observamos a famosa foto ao lado? Antes de Ruby chegar ao colégio pela primeira vez, os pais entraram nas salas e retiraram seus filhos do local. Os professores também se recusaram a dar aula, com exceção de uma, chamada Barbara Henry. A menina de 6 anos teve "aulas particulares" na escola durante aproximadamente 1 ano com essa professora.

I wonder what everyone else thinks of this type of criticism of education today. Are we watering-down the curriculum due to ideological pre-occupations?

Would be good for elementary/primary or middle school student research for a project or class activity or something like that.

This site looks really elementary, but DON'T be fooled! This company has units for various History subject areas (world, american, gov't, etc) that are based around activities AND taking lessons learned in the activities and making higher order thinking connections. I"m probably not doing the best job annotating this - but i will say this, I have one of the units and my students go NUTS over the activities and with their debriefing worksheets and discussion questions, my students really "get" the concepts and retain the learning.

Is primarily focussed on Islam and religion however it has a wealth of general history links and lesson plans for history teachers. The lesson plans seem quite up-to-date in their pedagogic strategies and should be useful to the teacher who's looking for a 'planning-lite' solution to their lesson delivery needs. (I promised one of the people who designed the site that I'd give it a plug. It really is good.)

It's not strictly speaking history-related however most of us also teach social studies or something similar and it was just too cool to pass up. An excellent way of demonstrating to students the issues regarding the current Western economic model and the Chimerica conundrum. Scary.
