"Amerigo Vespucci (1452-1512): Account of His First Voyage, 1497 Amerigo Vespucci (born in Florence in 1452), whose name was given to the American continents by Waldsmuller in 1507, worked in Seville (where he died) in the business house which fitted out Columbus' second expedition. Here he gives an account of the first of his own four voyages. If his claims are accurate he reached the mainland of the Americas shortly before Cabot, and at least 14 months before Columbus. "This material covers the historical background of the Korean War, including the division of Korea at the 38th Parallel between US and Soviet occupation forces; reparations reports involving Korea and economic surveys of Korea following World War II; the United Nations Korean Commission and Reconstruction Agency; Office of Strategic Srevices [OSS] reports on Korea; and relations with Republic of Korea (ROK) President Syngman Rhee. The material on the Korean War itself includes a chronology of events relating to the war in the papers of George M. The Korean War material also includes information about General of the Army Douglas MacArthur and his dismissal as Supreme Commander Allied Powers; Commander in Chief, United Nations Command; Commander in Chief, Far East; and Commanding General, U.S Army, Far East."

On Feb. 17, 1972, President Richard Nixon embarked on a diplomatic mission to normalize relations with the People's Republic of China.

"Millions of Americans fought and died during the Civil War, and the legacy of the Civil War remains in the poetry and music left behind. Music was used extensively during the Civil War as a means of inspiring loyalty among the troops, and as a source of inspiration and motivation during marching. Poetry was written to encourage unity, to document the experiences of soldiers, and to share women's place in the war. Bands on both sides would frequently borrow songs and lyrics from the other side, using them as parodies. One such tune was "Dixie", though the song was created some period of time before the Civil War, it gained in popularity during this time. "Dixie" originally tells the story of a freed black slave yearning to return home to the simple life of the plantation, both the North and South however, created their own wartime versions. "The Battle Cry of Freedom" and "Home Sweet Home" also featured both Union and Confederate versions. "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "The Southern Cross," were poems that were later set to music."

At the beginning of the 20th century, China was divided into sphere of influence with each powerful Western nation trying to exert as much control over it as possible. The Chinese resented foreigners control and expressed this at the beginning of the 20th century with the Boxer Rebellion. At the same time, the traditional government of China began to fail in the early years. The Chinese people, being resentful of foreigners and dissatisfied with inability of the present government to throw them out, initiated the Revolution of 1911, replacing the Chinese 2000 year old imperial system with the Republic of China headed by Sun Yat-sen.

This looks like an absolute treasure of a find, however the list does not lead to actual image, only descriptions of artefacts. They say they're still adding to it, perhaps that's why the images aren't up? I guess the pace of change is slower for classicists. Anyway, if they ever add those images this site will be an Ancient History teacher's dream. Fingers crossed.

What an excellent resource! It has a funky interactive map with little information windows that pop up as you mouse over them, and then if you click it gives you more detailed information. Definitely useful for student research or a classroom activity. The maps are quite beautiful.

Usually I avoid adding secondary sources (a good school library can fulfil that function) but the information here looks pretty good and covers topics students usually find interesting.

Fire destroyed the office of the War Department and all its files in 1800, and for decades historians believed that the collection, and the window it provided into the workings of the early federal government, was lost forever. Thanks to a decade-long effort to retrieve copies of the files scattered in archives across the country, the collection has been reconstituted and is offered here as a fully-searchable digital database.
