* Lawrence Royal & Cabinet Collections The Lawrence Collection consists of 40,000 glass plate negatives from 1870-1914. The images were produced commercially and capture topographical scenes of that period throughout Ireland. The entire Lawrence Royal collection (10,784 plates) and part of the Lawrence Cabinet collection (2,040 plates) are available here to view online. * Poole Whole Plate Collection The Poole collection comprises 65,000 glass plate negatives and was created by the family firm of A.H. Poole in Waterford between 1884-1954. The majority of images in the collection are studio portraits but the Poole Whole Plate subset which consists of 5,119 images, reflects the diversity of the collection with studio portraits, social and political events and also images of architecture and industry in the south east of Ireland. * Independent H Collection The Independent Newspaper collection of some 300,000 images, is made up of glass plates, plastic negatives and a small number of prints. The Independent H collection is a subset of the collection and contains 3,250 glass plates negatives dating from 1912-1936. It provides a record of many aspects of 20th century Irish life, and is particularly strong in the coverage of politics and sport in Ireland.

Digital Past is a digitization initiative undertaken by libraries, historical societies, museums, and other cultural venues throughout Illinois in partnership with the North Suburban Library System (NSLS) in Wheeling, Illinois. It began in 1998 with a grant from the Illinois State Library and has become a popular resource for researchers of all ages and interests including schoolchildren, genealogists, historians, authors, producers, and special interest groups. Digital Past contains collections from over 40 institutions of varying topics and formats including over 136,000+ records.

The British School at Rome Archive (BSR) thanks to the Getty Foundation, made freely available digital copies of the John Bryan Ward-Perkins photographic collection. A website of the "BSR digital collections was created to present not only the photographic material (Photographs) but also other types of resources which follow into different categories: Maps, Prints, Documents, Postcards, Drawings, Paintings and Manuscripts". But "the majority of the digital images displayed on the website are represented by the photographic prints and negatives from unique historic collections, including calotypes, glass and film negatives, slides and lantern slides."

Seems to focus more on the history of the British School at Rome rather than Roman history. Should revise the tags at this point but this summer heat here in Queensland is making me lazy...

Another one of the precious collections provided by that most excellent of libraries, Harvard University Library. It's so great that they don't just lock it up and be snobs. Good on them.

Many of the broadsides vividly describe the results of sentences handed down at London's central criminal court, the Old Bailey, the proceedings of which are now available online at http://www.oldbaileyonline.org.

Great place to start your search for digitized collections/archives. These collections are housed at historical and academic institutions of all kinds, and contain primary sources that can include original historical documents, images, audio, artifacts, etc.

Search for and view images of medieval and Renaissance manuscripts in the British Library. Detailed descriptions and bibliographies also included for each image. "Images can be accessed, printed and downloaded in unaltered form with copyright acknowledged, on a temporary basis for personal study"--See the British Library's copyright notice for more details.

Not easily browseable however you can search the collection, so I guess if you know what you're looking for it could be useful.

The LA84 Foundation has undertaken an ambitious project to convert portions of its traditional library collection to digital format. The growing digital collection now contains more than 300,000 pages, stored in over 75,000 PDF files.

Might be useful in showing your students that everything before the 1950s didn't happen in black and white. A humbly titled collection.

A digital history site that includes images and historical essays on crowds and crowd violence during the French Revolution, developed by the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University and the Department of History, University of California, Los Angeles.

A MASSIVE number of links to sites with images related to all areas and periods of history. You might need a spare week or two to go through all of them though. Gee, the internet's big!

The English Emblem Book Project of the Penn State University Libraries in Pennsylvania, USA, has digitized older form of texts, the emblem books, for the 16th to the 19th centuries. "An emblem book is a collection of images with adjoining text. In an emblem there is a dialog or tension between image and word. Emblems are frequently allegorical in theme. Emblem books are a form of text not altogether familiar to us today. An emblem book represents a particular kind of reading. Unlike today, the eye is not intended to move rapidly from page to page. The emblem is meant to arrest the sense, to lead into the text, to the richness of its associations. An emblem is something like a riddle, a "hieroglyph" in the Renaissance vocabulary -- what many readers considered to be a form of natural language."

Couldn't agree more. They reckon their collection will grow to over 10 million texts. An electronic Alexandria. It's the ability to sort the wheat from the chaff that makes Diigo such a powerful tool. Especially now it looks so sexy!
