Really interesting article on a school district in New Jersey that is testing iPad use across multiple classroom subjects . The district purchased 60 devices for students in the testing program. Pending the results, they are considering providing all of their high school students with the device as early as next year.

Thanks for contributing this great article. I am going to closely monitor this "experiment" and may potentially seek to interview some of the teachers who created this iPad curriculum for the various courses.

I'd really like to see one of these lessons in action- this sounds cool. I wonder, do the ipads stay in the classrooms?

A break from all our optimistic reading to check in with a pessimist.

While this platform has a lot of potential and a lot of positive aspects, I can't help but wonder if it's not just imposing a top-down system of learning. Although it's marketed as helping you form your own opinions, I'd argue that you're shoved in the direction of that opinion.

Why is overhearing a "half-alogue" more annoying than overhearing a dialog? Study shows that it's not a question of volume: hearing a half-alogue causes the brain to work harder to make sense of it, hurting our performance other cognitive tasks. Could this phenomenon be exploited in a positive way in a learning environment? (e.g. make use of the brain's natural tendency to work on filling gaps?)

The further along I go, the more I am realizing that we have fully arrived in the information age. For our nation to compete globally - we must get out of the trap of growing media consumers, technology consumers, and information consumers. We must grow a generation of students who not only use technology, but understand technology so that they can become active technology producers, so that they can create, innovate, imagine, and disrupt. Possibly, understanding computer science will be as important as learning to read and write - the new literacy.

I came across this article that talks about informal education vs. formal education based up on the experience of two siblings. It seems to me that over the past few years, the amount of learning materials has increased exponentially, and the my supplemental-informal education parallels my classroom / formal education. Perhaps it is time to begin to start training students to deal with infinite information, and to make it manageable so that they can begin to supplement their educations in novel ways, on their own terms.
