Title: Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Theory Author: Dede Paquette and John Ryan Date Published: 2001 Why Relevant and Summary: Explains Bronfenbrenner's theory and connects it to modern child development and compares this to child development when the economy was more industrial, less technological. It also explains Bronfenbrenner's concerns with our technological world. The 5th page looks at the human body as a part of a person's microsystem, which was fascinating, especially since the textbook doesn't seem to consider this. How This Influenced My Thinking: Introduced the idea of the human body as being part of the microsystem - new to me! Also, I learned that this model can play a big role in influencing public policies, which is refreshing because as a student, it's easy to get caught up in this thinking that the classroom stuff isn't relevant or doesn't easily apply to the real world… but it can! Credibility of Source: Pretty good - the work cites a lot of educational resources, and I read the company profile, which seems to be run by qualified people.

How This Influenced My Thinking: It hasn't particularly influenced my thinking but has given a better understanding of how the theory applies. Credibility of Source: Good- (.edu website)

As well as stating what the theory is, the site also goes over in detail, all the different systems associated with Bronfenbrenner's ecological theory. There is also an illustration with various terms that provides links to sites that explain the implications of each theory. How it influenced my thinking: This site influenced my thinking in a positive way because it broke down what each system was, what it entailed, and gave examples of what was being discussed. Credibility of source: The source is very credible and is riddled with citations and works cited pages. The link to it also ends in usd.edu which means it is probably a site made by colleges for colleges.

Why Relevant and Summary: This covers the basics of what temperament is, and how to tell what temperament a child might fall under. It describes the different traits of temperament and how to react to them. How this Influenced my Thinking: I wasn't aware of how many various traits a child can have that can determine their temperament, i generally believed you either had a well-behaved child, or a fussy child. This gives more dimension to temperament and shows how there are varying levels to a temperament as well. Credibility of Source: Has references; linked to Ohio State University; somewhat dated information, but information that is still relevant.

It also walks through the different stages of attachment and where children are at in different points in their lives How This Influenced My Thinking: I felt like it gave a little more information and helped to clear some things up that I was wondering about in the textbook. Credibility of Source: pretty good, well written and well cited information in the article.

How this influenced my thinking: I found it very interesting that Bowlby thought that there is a link between separations with the mom at an early age and maladjustments later on. Credibility of Source: It is from the simply psychology website, seems credible.

Title: ADHD Overview Author: Jacob Silverman Date Published: No date Why relevant and summary: This is a comprehensive overview of ADHD, the causes, symptoms, diagnoses, treatments and related disorders. There are also a number of other highly relevant articles that are easily accessible on this site. How this influenced my thinking: There is a lot of information about raising a child with ADHD. I've never had experience with this in regards to my own children, but as a former teacher I have been aware of the 'basics' for many years. There is so much to learn and understand on this topic, especially so that caregivers can be more understanding of individualized needs and be less likely to judge or treat children with ADHD differently. Credibility of source: This is a Discovery Health article. It may not be highly credible in it's own right, but likely pulled it's information from scholarly/medical/research based resources.

Title: Baby Delight Author: unknown Date Published: 2013 Why Relevant & Summary: Upon studying the benefits but potential dangers of cosleeping, I was interested in how I could find a safe way to cosleep with my baby that would give me a feeling of safety but also the closeness I'd like to have with my baby. This product is simple, there are two different models, but basically allow baby the safety of sleeping with mom and dad while being close. How This Influenced My Thinking: Knowing the potential dangers of cosleeping, I would encourage friends and family to consider this option for their baby, and for myself in the future. ADHD is most common in children and those children can cause a lot of chaos. How This Influenced My Thinking: I learned more about ADHD which helped me think about how those with ADHD act and feel. Credibility of Source: 5 because it is very detailed.

It also gives important statistics about kids and how often they are diagnosed with this disease. How This Influenced My Thinking: This article got me thinking about children with ADHD and how much more common it is these days. Also I learned that this disease could start as soon as the brain begins developing which was very surprising. Credibility of Source: This article contains references to give credit to all the facts regarding ADHD and it has also been reviewed by numerous MD's.

It discusses the physical and primary sexual changes, emotional changes, and gives time frames for these changes. how this influenced my thinking:This influenced my thinking because I had forgotten that men go through spermarche which is similar to a woman's menarche, so men and woman both go through these sexual changes at about age 13 credibility of source:This source was credible, it was from a mental health website

Most parents dont discuss sex topics and their children are already gaining sexual experience without safe background knowledge. How This Influenced My Thinking: i knew sex was always an awkward topic, but when i was young my dad explained to me what it was, and discussed puberty with me and it was normal and not odd. as i grew into adolescence it became wierd to talk to my parents. this just showed me that parents can find it difficult to the point where they ignore the issue and dont bother discussing it. It discusses why kids bully, signs of bullying, and strategies to stop bullying. How this influenced my thinking:I love that this article says to be brave and walk away. Never confront the bully. Sometimes, the bully is just looking to get a reaction out of you. Credibility of source:Credible

Title- why religion matters author-Patrick F. Fagan date-Jan 25th 1996 why relevant and summary- this site provided many supporting examples as to how religion influences a child's upbringing. This give my paper some depth and intertwined different view points. how this influenced me- i wasn't really influenced by this site because it didn't add anything that i hadn't heard before. It might influence a person more if they are not as familiar with religion, specifically Christianity, as i was. credibility-the site seems pretty credible. It is a .org website, and was written by someone with a PHD in his area of study.

It helps to focus on what can really affect the child when religion is involved in a family life. How this influenced my thinking: It just helps me to look at what I can help my children with when they reach that age and may be faced with these issues as well. Credibility of Source: I've used this site many times for references and it seems to be credible.

How this influenced my thinking: I have never really put alot of thought into what i would do when my parents got older and now i can understand better the pros and cons of putting them in a nursing home or caring for them myself. Credibility: Seems credible

Title: A review of successful aging models: Proposing proactive coping as an important additional strategy Author: Carolijn Ouwehand, Denise T.D. de Ridder, Jozien M. Bensing Date Published: Aug. 3, 2006 Why relevant and summary: This is a really great look into aging successfully and what that process entails. It delves into selective optimization with compensation. The authors argue that proactive coping - attempting to prevent potential stressors that are the cause of this decrease in resources - may be a valuable strategy for successful aging. The authors also present this theory as a method of postponing disengagement from daily activities. How this influenced my thinking: I have not given much thought to aging, although I know it is happening and will continue to happen. I've always just kind of viewed the elderly with a distant form of respect coupled with a bit of sorrow. Let's face it, who wants to get old? Yet, this will happen to all of us unless (god forbid) some unforseen tragedy strikes first. Reading about ways to gracefully and successfully age and avoid or postpone disengagement, will go a long way as people enter older adulthood. When I reach older adulthood, I hope to be as active as that 106 year old man who started running marathons in his 80s!

Morris Date Published: 2008 Why Relevant and Summary: Does a nice job in explaining autism, Asperger's, and related disorders. It identifies means for classification and diagnosis, associated characteristics and tendencies; what to expect from someone with one of these diseases. How This Influenced My Thinking: Educated me about autism, Asperger's, and related disorders... helped me to see from another perspective life with this kind of disorder. Credibility of Source: Pretty credible and valuable.

Title: Staying Healthy Author: Mayo Clinic Staff Date Published: March 19, 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: Explains what to expect from your body in middle adulthood, how you can maintain good health in middle adulthood, and the different areas with which maintenance will be necessary. How This Influenced My Thinking: I was able to relate the information from this source to my experience or observance of parents' experience with body changes in middle adulthood; I was able to learn tips for them that they combat old age with. Credibility of Source: Mayo Clinic

Title: The Tribal Mind: Moral Reasoning and Public Discourse Author: Arnold Kling Date Published: April 26, 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: As soon as I saw this article I thought it was great. In a very interesting way it explain what moral reasoning is and how it is developed, influenced upon and used in today's complicated world. It taps on issues that we are faced with daily, especially coming after a presidential election where the "morals" of each side where being discussed and with a fierce public discourse. This essay also discusses some great books written about the topic and the author does a great job at explaining how our own personal moral values and beliefs are used to justify our behavior and manipulate others; and also how these moral decisions are very often based on instinct and rapid judgment rather than rational thought. The author maintains the position that even though we have come along as a society we still behave sometimes in tribal manner, and that goes not only for how we conduct business or personal relationships but also how this great country of ours is run. How This Influenced My Thinking: As a young person, and as a mother of two young boys, I took in all the information that I got from this article; I think I am going to read it again and also read the books that were used to support some of the thinking behind it. I believe that when someone truly understand where someone else is coming from it will be easier to comprehend their thinking and the commitment that they have to their moral compass. Also interesting to find out was how often rushed moral judgment occurs in our society, and how that directly impact all of us. It was a great article with a great deal of food for thought. Credibility of Source: It was published on "The American" an online magazine of the American Enterprise Institute and its author is a member of the Financial Markets Working Group at the Mercatus Center of George Mason University

Title: Annie Murphy Paul: What we learn before we're born Author: Annie Murphy Paul. Date Published: 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: The journalist and mother expounds upon the different research and studies that give insight into what a fetus experiences and learns in-utero. How This Influenced My Thinking: The last part of this talk discusses the "Hunger Winter" study and how prenatal exposure to famine effected health in adult life, and how 9/11 fetuses of mother who experienced the trauma, had babies with greater susceptibility to PTSD. Credibility of Source: Highly credible with verifiable references

Title: Annie Murphy Paul: What we learn before we're born Author: Annie Murphy Paul. Date Published: Nov. 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: As a science reporter and mother Paul combined her experience as a pregnant woman with her love of research to write about what a fetus is learning in the womb and what a mother teaches through their shared experience. How This Influenced My Thinking: there was a lot of interesting and pertinent information shared within this video. The shared experiences of a mother are vast. A fetus learns from a mother's voice, food preferences, language and culture to environmental events such as famine, war, fear and stress.
