Title: How people make their own environments: a theory of genotype → environment effects Author: Sandra Scarr and Kathleen McCartney Date Published: April 1983 Why Relevant and Summary: This is relevant because it goes into much further detail about the genotype → environment effects theory compared to the book. This article proposes that a child's genotype can "directly affect its rearing environment," which is a point that was not as explicit in the textbook. Overall, this article emphasizes a greater role of genotype influence in the process of human development. How This Influenced My Thinking: This influenced my thinking by taking on a more opinionated perspective on the genotype → environment effects theory. The class textbook takes on a very objective approach to explaining, and this article takes it a step further by adding onto it. Although this article is outdated, it still provided me with a new train of thought. I found this to be an interesting article, but at times, hard to read. Credibility of Source: Very good (though outdated).

Title: Changes in Mechanical Control of Movement During the First 5 Months of Independent Walking: A Longitudinal Study. Author: Ann Hallemans Date Published: May 2007 Why Relevant and Summary: This article is relevant to the study because it demonstrate a longitudinal study done on infant of the earlier stages of walking. It also provides research done and the methods that were included as well. How This Influenced My Thinking: This had influence my way of thinking by now knowing that earlier development is in walking is not only with our nervous system but as well with our mental capability. Credibility of Source: Scholarly article found on EBSCOhost.

Title: Brain Keys Language Development Author: Beth Fleming Date Published: 2002 Why Relevant and Summary: This is relevant because it doesn't just breakdown step by step the stages of language development. But it gives examples as to what you can do. It gives research information. It tells you what you can do and what happens if you don't consistently talk to children. It encourages not only ways to help develop language, but to communicate. How This Influenced My Thinking: It influenced my thinking because of my own children. I talk to my children all the time NOW, but had I talked to them more and more when they were smaller, their development would be at different stage now. I agree that the research is consistent with results. Should I have another child, this impacts how I might do things differently. Credibility of Source: Beth Fleming is a Family Life Specialist

Title: Research Sheds Light on How Babies Learns ans Develop Language Author: Kimberly Kopko, Ph.D. Date Published: No Date Why Relevant and Summary: This article is relevant in terms of research methods used in discovering the steps to language development in children. The article discusses the ways that babies begin to understand and categorize words long before a child actually verbalizes. It touches base on the way that adults interact with babies/infants greatly aids language development. How This Influenced My Thinking: This did not influence my thinking but gave me better understanding of how language development begins with categorization. Credibility of Source:This is a credible source. It is a write up of the extensive research done by Dr. Marianella Casasola and Associate Professor of Human Development at Cornell University.

Title: Genetics Author:QLD Science teachers Date published: ND Why relevant and summary: This site discusses genetics and many of the terms we were introduced to in our text and in class. It goes over dominant and recessive genes, what alleles are, phenotypes, genotypes and much more. It provides you with examples and definitions of words, and walks you through how to determine if a trait is dominant or recessive. How it influenced my thinking: It influenced my thinking by helping me see the difference between things like phenotypes and genotypes, as well as providing pictures and diagrams to further help with my understanding. Credibility of source: The site is obviously made by science teachers but it doesn't say who, or where they are from. I'd say this site is credible because it seems to provide you with good and accurate information, but you probably can't use it as a source for a research paper.

Title: Texas Mom Delivers Two Sets of Identical Twins Author:Katie Moisse Date: 2-18-2013 Why relevant to summary: This is a story of a woman giving birth to two sets of identical twin boys. It is a very rare occurrence and it mostly happen if IVF is involved; in this particular case was all natural. The pregnancy and delivery had no complications and the 4 baby boys were delivered at 31 weeks via c-section. How has this influenced my thinking: This was a good happy story that it doesn't happen very often.

Title: The Cultural Art of Breastfeeding Author: Cynthia Good Mojab, MS Date Published: October-November 2000 Why Relevant and Summary: While this article is from a pro-breastfeeding site, there is a ton of info about the culture of breastfeeding. It covers both biological and cultural aspects. How This Influenced My Thinking: I never thought about how the lack of breastfeeding in the family would influence a new mom. Credibility of Source: The La Leche League is the Pro-Breastfeeding place to go. I find this source extremely credible.

Title: Breastfeeding and Human Lactation Author: Jan Riordan Date Published: 1998 Why Relevant and Summary: This ebook is very relevant because it discusses how different culutres choose to breastfeed or not and how other cultures can determine if they will breastfeed or not. This ebook gets more in detail but from my reading (pgs. 716-719) it covers background information and provide examples on which culture breastfeed why or why not. How This Influenced My Thinking: This has influence my thinking because I subconsciously didn't realized why most people didn't breast feed besides it just being a trend. Credibility of Source: This is credible because it is a published book.

Title:Prenatal development Author: Many Date Published:ND Why Relevant and Summary: This website was tremendously helpful when i was writing my paper on prenatal development. Not only does it take you through each stage of development and tell you what is happening, but it also discusses prenatal care. Pictures and diagrams are drawn to help you better understand what the site is discussing. It also describes some congenital and maternal derived abnormalities as well. How This Influenced My Thinking: This influenced my thinking by helping me understand what exactly goes on during each stage of pregnancy. I also never knew that abnormalities could be congenital or maternally derived so that was also interesting. Credibility of Source: The source has many citations and is from the encyclopedia of children's health so i assume its pretty credible

Title:The Preschool Years: Physical & Cognitive Development Author:Robert Feldman Date Published:n.d Why Relevant and Summary: This is relevant because it talks about the physical aspect of a toddlers early development. As well as their brain development, what you can and should not do. How This Influenced My Thinking: This made me realize that toddlers and infants are so complex because they can be affected really easy and it can transition into adulthood. Credibility of Source:Seems pretty credible, the author works for prentice hall. It is also based off of another resource.

Title: Guided Participation Author: Zeynep Isik-Ercan & Susan Golbeck - The Gale Group Date Published: 2009 Why Relevant & Summary: Not only explains what Guided Participation is, but also it's roots from both Vygotsky & Barbara Rogoff from her book "Apprenticeship in Thinking." How This Influenced My Thinking: It elaborated upon the information from the textbook, explained how social interaction plays a role in cognitive development, and the origins of the guided participation concept. Credibility of Source: Great - lots of references at the bottom of this article.

Title: Guided Participation Author: Zeynep Isik-Ercan and Susan Golbeck Date Published :2009 Why Relevant and summary: Its relevant because it talks about the guided participation in relation to Vygotsky's theories and concepts of zone of proximal development. The article talks about how guided participation helps the child to achieve their goals. How this influenced my thinking: Helps me to realize the method of teaching I can do for my children so they will teach others the same way. Credibility of Source: There is a bibliography at the end to cite their sources that are equivalent to the sources of theory used.

Title: Habituation - The Most Basic Form of Learning Author: Kendra Cherry Date Published: no date Why Relevant and Summary: I found this short excerpt helpful in defining habituation, but also explaining how this process is a method of learning for infants. How This Influenced my Thinking: This made me think about how infants use this as a method of learning; after observing an object until it is instilled in memory and moving along to newer objects and stimuli further their knowledge. Its the beginning of their being "scientists" and observing their environment and assessing it. Credibility of Source: recognized the journalist, informational website with section for Psychology and has other topics about infant development

Title: - 10 Reasons Play Makes Babies Smarter Author: Jenn Berman Ph.D Date Published: No Date Why Relevant and Summary: This was an interesting article that talked about why it is important for children to play and how giving them time to play when they are young will impact later life How This Influenced My Thinking: It gave me several good things to think abut when I was looking for a toy to write about for the short writing assignment. Credibility of Source: Published by the Parenting website and well written, I would say fairly credible

Title: Parenting Your Unique Child Author: Carol Ostergen, Ph.D. Date Published: 2004 Why Relevant and Summary: This article discusses the benefits to knowing and understanding your childs temperament and the goodness to fit theory. How This Influenced My Thinking: This has made me agree that each child should definitely be treated differently and that each child has a different response and parents can not respond the same way to each child and expect that each child will respond the same. Credibility of Source:Yes this article is credible. It is written by Carols Ostergen PhD -University of Wisconsin-Extension Reviewed by Dave Riley PhD- Wisconsin Extension and James Cameron PhD- The Preventive Ounce.

Title: Using Toys to Support Infant-Toddler Learning and Development Author: Gabriel Guyton Date Published: September 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: This article discusses how caregivers can select and even make (using random household materials) age appropriate toys to support and enhance cognitive development. The author encourages finding toys that support development across all domains - cognitive development, fine motor, gross motor, language, etc. How this influenced my thinking: When I first sat down to right the short critical thinking assignment on cognition and toys, it did not even occur to me to write about home-made toys such as a simple first puzzle made out of a muffin tin and some small objects, yet in reality, things found around the house make some of the best toys - ones that really engage babies and toddlers and are truly beneficial to child development. Credibility of source: This article is from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), thus seems highly credible.

How This Influenced My Thinking: This article gave clear and concise information as to what development is occurring and at what age. Credibility of Source: 7- Published by the credible agency, NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children)

Title: Temperament and Your Child's Personality Author: LLC and Dr. Myers Date Published: 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: This article gives a great explanation of what temperament is and how is affects your child, your child's development as well as you. How This Influenced My Thinking: It helped me better understand what temperament in a child can influence development. Credibility of Source: Credible, the article by Dr. Meyers seemed to be thoroughly researched and well written in a way that was reader friendly.

Title: Mother-Baby Behavioral sleep Laboratory Author: James McKenna Date Published: 2013 Why Relevant and Summary: Sharing your bed with your infant is a controversial issue, that has opponents and supporters. Dr McKenna has been studying sleep patterns of the infant for over 30 years and highly supports and recommends co sleeping if done properly. There are steps that he explains and the video is really good. How This Influenced My Thinking: I have practiced bed sharing with both my boys when they were infants and it was a very wonderful and beneficial experience for all of us. I am glad research supports it, despite media trying to make it a big issue. Credibility of Source:
