How has this influenced my thinking: It convinces me more that we should raise our children not only as individuals who should strive to make themselves better and successful but also to feel as members of the society and its contributors. Why credible: This is an excerpt from a published book.

Date Published:Jan 6, 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: It gives a nice overview of what exactly ADHD (and also ADD) is, what symptoms there are and how to work with it. it also gives interesting facts about how long it may have been around, and how many people are diagnosed with it. How this Influenced my Thinking; This just gave me a few extra bits of information about ADHD and its history, i am already familiar with it, as i have a younger brother who was diagnosed with it. Credibility of Source: The authors have degrees, and it is on a credible website about many varying aspects of psychology.

Grohol Date Published: 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: This article describes the different symptoms of ADHD, and the different subtypes of ADHD. How it Influenced my Thinking: I was really surprised by the number of children in america that have ADHD. It says on average one student in each classroom will have it. Credibility of Source: Seems like a very credible source.

How This Influenced My Thinking: The up-to-date research regarding the history, treatments, and causes of ADHD of this site have been illuminating and helpful. Credibility of Source: 7- Sources are cited at the bottom of articles, from credible sources.

Title: Social Development Author: Growing Miracles Date Published: 2010 Why Relevant and Summary: It's relevant because it talks about the social development and all the aspects of what a toddler learns in this stage of life. It talks about communicating, sharing, putting the child in home settings and setting limits for the child. How This Influenced My Thinking: It influences my thinking because it makes me want to go back to when my children were small so that I can teach them differently than how they were taught. Credibility of Source: I think it's credible because even though it was reprinted with permission, the information is similar to that of research.

How This Influenced My Thinking: This powerpoint helped to strengthen my knowledge in regards to the topic of parenting styles Credibility of Source: published on a .edu website which means its of educational purposes and should hold some validity and credibility

Title: Parenting Styles and Adolescence Author: Kimberly Kopko Date Published: 2007 Why relevant and summary: This is an excellent overview of Diana Baumrind's parenting styles through Cornell University Department of Policy Analysis and Management. This research provides an overview of the parenting styles presented by Diana Baumrind, and their impact on adolescent development. How this influenced my thinking: These parenting concepts really interest me and inspired me to reflect on the several parenting styles I encountered as a child moving through a variety of foster homes. It also gave me quite a lot to think about in regards to how I parent my own children. Often I question whether or not a child having grown up in such an unstable environment as I did, is able to be a healthy and 'good' parent. However, after reading through these parenting styles, I have realized that my parenting style is natural, healthy and has a good balance of warmth and discipline. How This Influenced My Thinking: This helped back-up my ideas. Credibility of Source: It seems credible. It has all the sources and links they used on the bottom of the page, as well as on the images and videos used.

Date published:2010 Summary and Why Relevant: Explains how kids who are obese are much more likely to be bullied then children at an average weight. How this influenced my thinking: I always knew children who are overweight are more likely to be made fun of, but i was surprised at how obesity has doubled in children over the past 20 years. Credibility of source: From CNN so i think it is credible.

With dedicated nutritional and fitness experts, this website is a great place to start for parents of overweight children, who are looking for fun, simple ways to make the lifestyle changes necessary for healthy living and losing weight. How this influenced my thinking: I am disheartened when I see families with obese parents and children in the grocery store with carts full of frozen meals and processed junk foods. I wish there was a way to reach out and educate them about what they are putting in their bodies and how what they consume, coupled with minimal physical activity, is putting them at a huge risk of heart disease, cancer, and a plethora of other health complications. Allstride is a great website to direct parents who are ready to start living a healthier lifestyle as a family.

This article presents relevant information for our human development class as well as resources for further research. How This Influenced My Thinking:  Brain development greatly influences me and I am always looking for information that I can put into practice. I have experience in working with youth who have faced maltreatment at an early age and I can see the lasting effects it has had on them. Title: Effects of Divorce on Children Author: Lesley Foulkes-Jamison Date Published: 2001 Why Relevant and Summary:This article focused on children and their behaviors and reactions after divorce. It also gave some good insight on what parents could do to make their child feel less confused about the divorce. How This Influenced My Thinking: I learned about statistics of how likely children are to behave in negative ways after divorce and also gave me good advice on how to help your child cope. Credibility of Source: Lesley is a psychologist and has a Ph.D and all of her information seemed to be very accurate.

Also gives many tips on ways to make the divorce easier on your children. How This Influenced My Thinking: Opened my eyes up to the many challenges present in this type of situation - when a couple is not happy together nor getting along but still need to work really hard to keep a good enough relationship to support their children. Title: Face Bullying With Confidence 8 Kidpower Skills We Can Use Right Away Author: Irene van der Zande Date: n.d. Why relevant and summary: This article was an extract from a book called "Bullying - What Adults Need to Know and Do to Keep Kids Safe", which gives advice on how to handle bullying and how to help young children who are subject to it. It gives 8 tips that anyone who works with children can find useful. It stresses the idea that this is a phenomena that unfortunately exists in our schools, but it is preventable. We should educate ourselves and our kids and empower them to face challenges with confidence. How has this influenced my thinking: I am a mother of two young boys, and even though we have not experienced any bullying, is good to know as much as possible that in any event I can help my boys deal with this challenge. Credibility of source: This article was published on Kid-power.com by its founder who is a published author. Kidpower is a non profit organization which advocates and helps kids against abuse, kidnapping, bullying etc nation wide and internationally.

Discusses thought processes such as 'inferential reasoning', 'third eye problem', and the pendulum task to explain in detail what the Formal Operational Stage requires. How this influenced my thinking: Gave me lots of ideas of ways to test for the Formal Operational Stage and to discuss it effectively in my paper. Title: Violent Video Games Are a Risk Factor for Criminal Behavior and Aggression Author: Matt Delisi, Craig Anderson, Douglas Gentile, Angie Hunt Date: March 26, 2013 Why relevant and summary: I'll be discussing whether or not violent video games should be banned in this critical thinking assignment, and this is a study that supports my view that violent video games should be banned. How this influenced my thinking: It reinforced what I believe: violent media should be restricted. Violent video games should be banned. Parents need to take responsibility for what they are letting their kids interact with. Did excessive playing of violent video games cause Adam Lanza to massacre 26 innocent souls? It was definitely a significant factor, coupled with serious mental health problems. This article encouraged me to also see that there may be a middle ground between banning the games and free access. Maybe some educational resources for parents need to be made publicly available and easily accessible, so that they have the tools they need to discourage/disallow violent media in the home.

How This Influenced My Thinking: I showed me how our problem of obesity cannot be limited to diet and exercise, but is the perfect storm of sendentary/obesity-promoting occurances within our culture.
