Schmitt, M.D Date Published:March 6, 2009 Why Relevant and Summary: This article explains what prenatal care is, what steps should be taken to have a healthy baby, and a list of Do's and Dont's. it also gives information on prenatal checkups for women and what to expect. This is relevant because it explains prenatal care. How this Influenced my thinking: It coincided with what i already knew about prenatal care. i learned however that women should take folic acid even if unsure if they are pregnant, or if they are planning on getting pregnant Credibility of Source:part of U.S. department of health, women's health department.

It gives you tips and advice for prenatal development. It also gives you defenitions and good facts. How This Influenced My Thinking: This allowed me to see more of the preganancy side than anything else. I managed to read through it and find out that there are a lot of things you need to do while pregnant. Credibility: It came from Womenshealth.org, and a doctor wrote this, so I assume that it is very credible.

How This Influenced My Thinking: Provided important tips with which to keep in mind later on in life if this particular things will affect me. Title: Genetic and Environmental  Influences  On Human Behavioral Differences Author: David Matt McGue and Thomas J. Bouchard Jr. Date Published:1998 Why Relevant and Summary: Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Theory is clearly stated and explained with examples. The analogies and summaries were helpful to understand the ecological systems better.  How This Influenced My Thinking: This discussed the differences between genetic and environmental factors affecting a persons behaviors. Credibility of Source: Very credible.  Lots of information and authors as well as dates

Title: Babies Recognize Mom's voice from the Womb Author: Lee Dye Published: May 22 2013 Why relevant and Summary: Great informative ABC article about research being done in China and Canada which show similar results on babies recognizing mothers's voice. How this influenced my thinking: I am very interested in brain development and learning. I am excited about researching learning and brain development in the womb. Credibility of source: very credible news station and research is cited.

Title:Parenting Styles and Its Correlates Author: Nancy Darling, PhD, MS Date Published: March 1999 Why Relevant and Summary: This article gives you and understanding and a clear picture of the different parenting styles. As well, the different parenting styles can predict the behavior of the child and even the potential parenting skills. How This Influenced My Thinking: This article furthered my understanding of the four different types of parenting styles and how the different styles can effect the outcome of the child's behavior. Credibility of Source: Very credible, author has a PhD and MS. Also the author cites credible sources.

Title: Applications and Utility of Urie Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Theory Author: Brian Lewthwaite (ed.) Date Published: Spring 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: This journal from the Manitoba Education Research Network, summarizes several research studies that apply Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Theory. One of the studies, The Importance of Local Environment for Promoting Student Engagement in Learning by Janet McVittie and Danette Senterre, is particularly interesting and relevant. This is a direct application of how the microsystems outside the classroom affect the microsystem of the classroom, and how the mesosystems and exosystems affect classroom engagement. When children come into the classroom, they bring with them the values and habits of their exosystem and participate in their classroom based on how they are situated in their other microsystems. (McVittie & Senterre) How This Influenced My Thinking: Based on personal experiences, I can understand how our circumstances in our mesosystems and Microsystems can affect our performance in school. At the age of 14, I became and orphan when my only parent died. In retrospect, this event and the subsequent events that resulted from it deeply affected my academic progress. In other words, the tragic events in my family microsystem had a major impact on my school microsystem, as well as on my various mesosystems. Credibility of Source: The University of Manitoba Centre for Research in Youth, Science Teaching and Learning seems like a highly credible source.

Title: Nature Vs. Nurture: Are we Really Born That Way? Author: Kimberly Powell Date published: N.D. Why Relevant and Summary: In this article she clearly explains the topic of nature vs. nurture and goes into how it is still undetermined if our genes play a role in our personality. How it influenced my thinking: It made me wonder if my personality trait that are similar to my parents came from them genetically or if it is similar because that is what i grew up around. Credibility of source: This article seems somewhat credible, though i didn't see any references.

This article talks about how scientist fight over how much of who we are is shaped by genes and how much by the environment. How This Influenced My Thinking: It influenced me thinking by explaining to me how nature and nurture do play a big role in human development Credibility of Source: This source seems credible

How This Influenced My Thinking: This influenced my thinking regarding certain controversial attributes that are involved in this debate such as morality and sexual orientation. Title: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder Author: Timothy Rogge Date Published: 03-25-2012 Why Relevant and Summary: This article explains the causes, risk factors, symptoms, signs and tests, treatment, expectations, health care provider, and prevention. ADHD is most common in children and those children can cause a lot of chaos. How This Influenced My Thinking: I learned more about ADHD which helped me think about how those with ADHD act and feel. Credibility of Source: 5 because it is very detailed.

Medical Encyclopedia Date Published: March 25, 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: This article tells you everything you need to know about ADHD including symptoms, signs, tests, treatment, and medications. It also gives important statistics about kids and how often they are diagnosed with this disease. How This Influenced My Thinking: This article got me thinking about children with ADHD and how much more common it is these days. Also I learned that this disease could start as soon as the brain begins developing which was very surprising. Credibility of Source: This article contains references to give credit to all the facts regarding ADHD and it has also been reviewed by numerous MD's.

I myself am fascinated with religion, I am fascinated at the different types of religions that exist and the different faiths that people have and put into their religion, creator, and God. It still amazes me that the world is still spinning with so many conflicts with each religion. How Eastern and Western Cultures Tackle Learning Author : Ali Spiegel Date : 11/12/2012 Link : http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2012/11/12/164793058/struggle-for-smarts-how-eastern-and-western-cultures-tackle-learning Why Relevant and Summary: Points out a big difference between Eastern and Western cultures regarding intelligence and learning. Eastern cultures believe that struggling through a problem is "good" and shows emotional strength. They believe intelligence is something that anyone can obtain through hard work and persistence. Western culture tends to view intelligence as innate. And if you have to struggle at something, then you're simply not good at it, and that's that. How This Influenced My Thinking: Once this was pointed out to me, it seemed very apparent to me. Considering I grew up with an Asian mom and many Asian friends, I felt that this generalization held some truth to it.

How This Influenced My Thinking: It gave me a better understanding of the motivators behind value and decision formation; relative to my own formation of values and my own making of decisions. Title: Aging: What to Expect Author: Mayo Clinic staff Date Published: Nov. 8, 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: This article get in depth about how age and past living life styles like smoking or bad eating habits can effect the body over time. The article covers different parts of the body and how age effect them. For example, the parts of the body the article covers is the cardiovascular system, bones, joints, and muscles. How This Influenced My Thinking: This article gave me a more in depth perception on how the choices we making in our middle adulthood can effect the life expectancy of our life. Title: Annie Murphy Paul: What we learn before we're born Author: Annie Murphy Paul. Date Published: 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: The journalist and mother expounds upon the different research and studies that give insight into what a fetus experiences and learns in-utero. How This Influenced My Thinking: The last part of this talk discusses the "Hunger Winter" study and how prenatal exposure to famine effected health in adult life, and how 9/11 fetuses of mother who experienced the trauma, had babies with greater susceptibility to PTSD. Title: Annie Murphy Paul: What we learn before we're born Author: Annie Murphy Paul. Date Published: Nov. 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: As a science reporter and mother Paul combined her experience as a pregnant woman with her love of research to write about what a fetus is learning in the womb and what a mother teaches through their shared experience. How This Influenced My Thinking: there was a lot of interesting and pertinent information shared within this video. The shared experiences of a mother are vast. A fetus learns from a mother's voice, food preferences, language and culture to environmental events such as famine, war, fear and stress.

Title:Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Author: KidsHealth Date Published:1995 Why Relevant and Summary: This is an in depth article about OCD, it's possible causes, relative behaviors of a child with OCD, signs and symptoms, diagnosing and treatment. How This Influenced My Thinking: I have a child with this disorder and this article was very informative for me as a person who had no background with this disorder. It helped to explain some of the behaviors I was witnessing and help me to make sense of it. Credibility of Source:Very credible as they use a host of different pediatricians and experts in the field to help keep the information as up to date as possible.

Title: Urie Bronfenbrenner and Child Development Author: Angela Oswalt Date Published: Jan. 17, 2008 Why Relevant and Summary: This page is relevant because it speaks of Urie Bronfenbrenner's model of development. The main focus is on child and adolescent development. It compares Urie's model to other theoris of development. This is a great starting point if you want to learn about Freud, Erikson, Piaget, Kohlberg and Urie Bronfenbrenner. How This Influenced My Thinking: From this model I understood that how a child develops is influenced from the systems in the child's life. However, when taking microsystem into consideration and the important people in the child's life, the way the child acts towards the microsystem (people) also influences how those people will act towards the child. Credibility of Source: No citations or references. Came from a mental help site.

How This Influenced My Thinking: This entry helped me understand the systems a bit better. Credibility of Source: its a 17 page document covring many ideas and theories, it has many links connected to it.

Title: Bring up BABIES: Director Thomas Balmes and producer Alain Chabat talk Author: Nick Dawsom Date published: March 16, 2010 (movie BABIES released May 7, 2010) Why Relevant and Summary: This beautiful film is relevant to the development of children globally in that it artistically represents the similarity and differences in the first year of life. Four children are followed from birth to their first birthday: Ponijao in Opuwo, Nambia, Mari in Tokyo, Japan, Bagar in Bayanchandmani, Mongolia, and Hattie in San Francisco, California. Some is a challenge to watch, as for us some of the parenting habits are unfamiliar to our culture, while many moments are funny and beautiful. I encourage you to watch the movie, and have linked specifically to this article so that you can also read about the director and producers' thoughts on the film. How this Influenced my Thinking: This showed me just how important it is to communicate with children about their feelings, and how to help them understand them. It showed me it is important to be calm and discuss what is going on, instead of simply reacting to a situation.
