Title: 7 Tips for a Successful Marriage Author: Tim Dowling Date: 8 February 2013 Why relevant and summary: This article provides seven solid tips for maintaining a healthy and successful marriage. For example, Dowling says, "go to bed angry if you want to" because you're better off getting a good night's sleep before tackling the conflict again. Another good tip is to remember that every relationship is unique and it is damaging to compare yours to other relationships. I think the other gives some pretty solid, yet basic marriage advice that couples considering marriage should read. How this influenced my thinking: I have been married and divorced, and am in another relationship that is progressing toward marriage. I hope to avoid the mistakes made in my first marriage, so articles like this one apply directly to my personal life. However, no matter how good the advice is, you've got to make sure you're marrying someone you can absolutely be with through thick and thin. Title: The Development of Self-Esteem Author: Sue and Jo Date Published: No Date Why Relevant and Summary: This is a straightforward summary of a child's cognitive development of self-esteem. Although it doesn't include many details of what contributes to a child's self-esteem it does clearly define what its makeup is. How This Influenced My Thinking: This was interesting to me because it summed up the definition of self-esteem in a nutshell. I am personally interested in how to promote a healthy self-esteem in children but this website gives a good foundation for the outline of what self-esteem is and what factors affect it. Credibility of Source: It looks like it's some sort of personal website; however, it does cite studies and seems to back up its statements with scientific data.

Title: Milestones in Bilingual Children's Language Development Author: Annick De Houwer Date Published: 07/31/2012 Why Relevant and Summary: This is a relevant article because it is looking at language development, focusing on how children that grow up hearing two languages from infancy develop, and whether or not there are any discernible delays as children learn to process two languages. How This Influenced My Thinking: I thought that this was a very interesting article walking me through the developmental process of a bilingual child, I think that giving a child a chance to grow up with more than one language is very helpful, and this article supports my feelings. How This Influenced My Thinking:it has made me have a respect and understanding for how language begins.  It has made me think about how it all starts with the simple sounds an infant makes Credibility of Source: It seems to be a very credible source.

Title: Bronfenbrenner Ecological Systems Model Author: Nicole Yingst Date Published: 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: This is relevant because it gives a clear and easy to understand definition of what the five environmental systems are and it connects it to how it relates adolescents. It gives an example of each system and it also talks about a personal experience of how a teacher relates the ecological system to her classroom How This Influenced My Thinking: It influenced my thinks by giving me a better understanding of the concept and it gives good examples Credibility of Source: Not too sure about the credibility because it doesn't say where its comes from

Title: From Conception to Birth: A Life Unfolds Authors: Alexander Tsiaras and Barry Werth Date Published: Book - 2002, TED talk video - Nov. 14, 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: This amazing book offers beautiful photographic high magnetic resonance scans of a baby from conception through birth. This book begins with the anatomy of the egg and sperm, and the cell division that occurs just after conception. Starting with the first few hours, then moving into the first several days, and finally presenting images of the growing fetus week-by-week, this is an absolutely fascinating book. NOTE: I own a copy and am willing to bring to class if anyone is interested. How this influenced my thinking: Every time I look through this book, I am fascinated and truly moved by the miracle that is the creation and development of us! Credibility of Source: The author, Alexander Tsiaras, is responsible for remarkable achievements in medical imaging technology. Barry Werth is a renowned U.S. science writer. (Second resource post) Title: Q & A With Breastfeeding Mom Jamie Lynne Grumet Author: Kate Pickert Date Published: 10 May 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: This particular TIME cover generated much controversy, but the reality is that extended breastfeeding is healthy and encouraged, and is biologically normal. We need to normalize breastfeeding in our society. How This Influenced My Thinking: Breastfeeding long term is biologically normal, but not socially normal. The more we see the benefits and see mothers continuing to breastfeed, the more socially normal it will become. I am proud to call Jamie Grumet a friend of mine. She works hard to normalize breastfeeding and attachment parenting, without trying to start a parenting war. Credibility of Source: This Q & A is direct from the TIME Health and Family

Title: Breastfeeding Across Cultures Author: Keith Goetzman Date: 8/11/2009 Why Relevant and Summary: This just gives an example of the difference between cultures on the topic of breastfeeding in public, or just breastfeeding in general. This gives an example of Mongolian cultural differences. How This Influenced my Thinking: It showed me how different cultures vary, and how something labeled as "taboo" in our culture is completely normal for another.

Title:Outdoor Play Author: Johnson, Christie & Wardle Date Published: 2005 Why relevant/summary: This article is relevant because it throughly discusses the importance of physical activity to a growing toddler, specifically how outdoor play can aide in not only their physical development but how it can also be used as a tool for cognitive learning opportunities. How this influenced my thinking: This article opened my eyes to how outdoor play is not only providing play and physical activity for a young child but also many different learning opportunities that they may not experience otherwise. Credibility of Source: Very credible, the authors provided many examples as well as citations and references.

title-ADHD author- multiple (its a governmental website) date-ND why relevant/summary-This site is relevant to my topic because it describes ADHD in a way that it easy to understand and break down. It discusses the 3 subtypes of adhd that i didnt even know existed. And it tells you what it used to treat it. how it influenced my thinking- This site influenced my thinking on what adhd is because before, i thought it was a straight forward disorder that people took medication for. But after visiting this site, i realized that there are different types, and it affects people differently. Not everyone is medicated for it, and many people go through life undiagnosed. credibility of source- credible since its a government website

Title: 10 Ways to Raise a Grateful kid Author: Homa Tavangar Date Published: ND Why Relevant and Summary: This article is very helpful if one is doing Assignment 9 on "Parenting a Toddler". It gives several examples on how to make your child grateful for everything and in the process it also helps children to be more social and overcome shyness. How this influenced my thinking: This article was very helpful. I was aware of all of the examples but it definitely made me put in action the examples whenever I have a toddler, because I definitely want them to be well educated and respectful. Credibility of Source: This article seems credible, since it's from PBS Parents

Title: Praise, encouragement, and rewards while raising your toddler Author: Raising Children Network Date Published: 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: This article gives multiple ways to connect and help the social development of your toddler. It gives examples of how a parent should praise, encourage, and reward their children. I also like this website because it included videos and demonstrations of what a parent could do while raising their toddlers. How This Influenced My Thinking: This reinforces my understanding of how much attention toddlers need from their parents during their development in order to increase their own development. Credibility of Source: I browsed the whole website and all information seems accurate and it has a lot of good examples and ideas.

Author: Kori Ellis Date Published: April 3, 2012 Why relevant/summary: This article gives a great explanation of what ADHD is, how to treat it as well as a look at the over diagnosis of the disorder. How did this influence my thinking?: This article makes clear many aspects of ADHD that I had not thought of or known about prior to reading it. Source Credibility: Very credible. Not only did the author include relevant personal opinions but included many citations from medical professionals in many different fields of medicine.

As well, the article breaks down what it is, the symptoms and signs, and a lot more detail information. How This Influenced My Thinking: this article gave a lot of detailed information and influenced me by giving me a more detailed out look on how those diagnosed with ADHD are effected. Credibility of Source: very credible written my a MD.

McKenna, Ph.D. Date Published: No Date Why Relevant and Summary: This webpage is very helpful if one is doing their Assignment on Co-sleeping It gives examples of countries who practice co-sleeping which involves the majority of the countries including the United States. Many people believe Americans don't practice co-sleeping but research shows that many Americans do. How This Influenced My Thinking: This webpage definitely helped me be more open about other cultures. I believed that only Latino families practiced co-sleeping, but it turns out that the majority of the world practices co-sleeping. Credibility of Source: This source seems credible due to the references that were used

It also talked about why co-sleeping is beneficial, what cultures favor it, and even provided a few statistics of the benefits of co-sleeping, and how common it is in the United States. How This Influenced My Thinking: This website didn't influence my thinking much because it spoke very highly of co-sleeping and i am already an advocate of it. Credibility of Source: The site seems credible because the information was backed with references.

One mark down for brevity. How This Influenced My Thinking: I had no idea that what I did naturally was a thing of controversy. I am glad that other cultures, including our own, practice co-sleeping. Credibility of Source: Very high

How This Influenced My Thinking: It was very clear and made me smarter on the topic. Credibility of Source: The cite seems legit! You should take a look!

Title: Author: Yamini Durani Date Published: October, 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: Explains reasons for cosleeping, how it is safe, addresses SIDS, how to safely cosleep, and how to help your child make the transition from cosleeping to sleeping on its own. How This Influenced My Thinking: I was never aware of cosleeping, at least to the extent with which it can occur. I was educated on the risks of cosleeping, which I never knew were possible. I was also introduced to SIDs. Credibility of Source: Source written by a doctor.

Title: 6 Benefits of co-sleeping with your children Author: Naomi De la Torre Date Published: 24Feb2012 Why relevant and Summary: This article talks abut the benefits of co-sleeping and how it can benefit both the child and the family. This article goes into detail about how a child can gain more self esteem and acceptance through co sleeping and how the mother can enjoy more sleep at night while also creating a strong bond with her child. How this influenced my thinking: It has enlightened me to the benefits of co-sleeping. As ignorant as this may sound before this class I always thought people co slept with their child cause they we too cheap to buy them a crib and quite frankly I looked down upon them. But now I understand some of the benefits a child gains through co-sleeping. Credibility: A published website

Title: Effects of Divorce on Children Author: Lesley Foulkes-Jamison Date Published: 2001 Why Relevant and Summary:This article focused on children and their behaviors and reactions after divorce. It also gave some good insight on what parents could do to make their child feel less confused about the divorce. How This Influenced My Thinking: I learned about statistics of how likely children are to behave in negative ways after divorce and also gave me good advice on how to help your child cope. Credibility of Source: Lesley is a psychologist and has a Ph.D and all of her information seemed to be very accurate.

Date Published: 2001 Why Relevant and Summary: Discusses the many stressors on children as their parents go through a divorce, and how they are affected differently depending on their age and level of development. Also gives many tips on ways to make the divorce easier on your children. How This Influenced My Thinking: Opened my eyes up to the many challenges present in this type of situation - when a couple is not happy together nor getting along but still need to work really hard to keep a good enough relationship to support their children. Credibility of Source: Clinical Psychology Associates - very credible

Title: Peer Relations in Middle Childhood Author: Blume & Zembar Date: n.d. Why Relevant and Summary: This article explains how friendship is important in middle childhood. Whether or not someone likes you or dislikes you can really make or break a person. Friends provide all the needs the one self can use at that time and in the future. For one of them being a need for survival because in middle childhood friendship is based on people liking you which then determines their popularity status. Also discussed in this article is the individual need for success, power, status, approval, autonomy, and etc. It also expresses the concerns of rejection in children at this age and it affects them. How this influenced my thinking: This helped my understanding of why it is important for us to connect with others and increase our social skills. I have found a new understanding of the word friendship from this article. Credibility: Seems credible because they cited quotes.

Zembar Date Published: 2007 Why relevant and summary: great information on research and finding of socialization patterns- shows a strong correlation between playground play and future choices in adult relationships. The habit forming patters of socialization developed at an early age impact how we relate to people as we become older. How this influenced my thinking: I was not aware how big of an impact peer relations/friendships in middle childhood had on adults. Credibility of source: seems very credible.
