Title: Guided Participation Author: Zeynep Isik-Ercan & Susan Golbeck - The Gale Group Date Published: 2009 Why Relevant & Summary: Not only explains what Guided Participation is, but also it's roots from both Vygotsky & Barbara Rogoff from her book "Apprenticeship in Thinking." How This Influenced My Thinking: It elaborated upon the information from the textbook, explained how social interaction plays a role in cognitive development, and the origins of the guided participation concept. Credibility of Source: Great - lots of references at the bottom of this article.

The article talks about how guided participation helps the child to achieve their goals. How this influenced my thinking: Helps me to realize the method of teaching I can do for my children so they will teach others the same way. Credibility of Source: There is a bibliography at the end to cite their sources that are equivalent to the sources of theory used.

Why Relevant and Summary: This covers the basics of what temperament is, and how to tell what temperament a child might fall under. It describes the different traits of temperament and how to react to them. How this Influenced my Thinking: I wasn't aware of how many various traits a child can have that can determine their temperament, i generally believed you either had a well-behaved child, or a fussy child. This gives more dimension to temperament and shows how there are varying levels to a temperament as well. Credibility of Source: Has references; linked to Ohio State University; somewhat dated information, but information that is still relevant.

It not only provides you with a definition of each term, but also gives you information on Vygotsky, and provides you with sample learning scenarios that help you to better understand his theory. how this influenced my thinking- This webpage gave me insight on what are good ways of teaching someone a new task. It helped me to better understand why a child would have trouble learning a new task, and what can be done to help them achieve their goal. credibility of source- credible with many sources

Title: Vygotsky Development & Zone of Proximal Dev & Constructivist Author: Professor Indiana Date published: 20May2010 Why relevant and summary: This video is relevant because it describes Vygotsky's theory of Zone of Proximal Development and gives good examples. This video shows how young children can be taught not only by teachers and adults but by their peers who are slightly more advanced than them.You are able to witness both Scaffolding and guided participation within this segment. How this influenced my thinking: It gave me a better understanding of Vygotsky's theory. Credibility of Source: it was published by a professor.

It also has a good comparison between Vygotsky and Piaget. How This Influenced My Thinking: It was good additional material that went more in depth on the topic, and had some information that the textbook did not cover. Credibility of Source: Good - the author is a professor at Wigan and Leigh college.

The effects of Vygotsky's theory is presented and there is also a video that talks about the differences of both theories. How This Influenced My Thinking: This helped me know that children should have somewhat of independence and freedom to learn skills that'll benefit them in the future. DVD Author: power-babies-youtube video Date: March 24, 2011 Why relevant and summary:The process of habituation is very crucial to our cognitive development and ability to function in the world. This clip shows the activity how it is performed and how the data is collected and the graph plotted. I think it is very interesting watching what we learn how it is actually done in practice and also how it occurs naturally. How this influenced my thinking: It has made my belief stronger on the ability our children have to perform cognitive tasks at a much earlier age than previously thought. Credibility of source: This DVD is put together by a psychologist with a PhD in experimental psychology and cognitive science.

It also walks through the different stages of attachment and where children are at in different points in their lives How This Influenced My Thinking: I felt like it gave a little more information and helped to clear some things up that I was wondering about in the textbook. Credibility of Source: pretty good, well written and well cited information in the article.

How this influenced my thinking: I found it very interesting that Bowlby thought that there is a link between separations with the mom at an early age and maladjustments later on. Credibility of Source: It is from the simply psychology website, seems credible.

Title- Mary Ainsworth Author- Saul Mcleod Date published-2008 Why relevant and summary- This site goes into depth about who Mary Ainsworth is, what she did for psychology, and how she came to develop her theory of secure attachment. The site gives a lot of information on the different attachment styles and what they mean, as well as providing a video that illustrates the different types of attachment. How this influenced my thinking- This influenced my thinking by allowing me to see how crucial of a role attachment plays in the development of children. Title: Social Intelligence for Toddlers Author: Dr. Laura Markham Date Published: n.d. Why Relevant and Summary: This site is relevant because it gives tips on how to handle toddlers in social interactions, and how to help them interact well with others, and understand to not only understand their own emotions, but the emotions of others as well. How this Influenced my Thinking: This showed me just how important it is to communicate with children about their feelings, and how to help them understand them. It showed me it is important to be calm and discuss what is going on, instead of simply reacting to a situation. Credibility of Source: Degree aquired by author, found on ahaparenting.com, a website for parent to seek helpful and beneficial tips and lessons on raising kids.

How This Influenced My Thinking: This articles identified the importance of communicating and intervening with your child to help develop social skills and the importance of knowing how your child feels, and helping your child understand other peoples feelings. It gives several examples on how to make your child grateful for everything and in the process it also helps children to be more social and overcome shyness. How this influenced my thinking: This article was very helpful. I was aware of all of the examples but it definitely made me put in action the examples whenever I have a toddler, because I definitely want them to be well educated and respectful. How has this influenced my thinking: It convinces me more that we should raise our children not only as individuals who should strive to make themselves better and successful but also to feel as members of the society and its contributors. Why credible: This is an excerpt from a published book.

Date Published:Jan 6, 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: It gives a nice overview of what exactly ADHD (and also ADD) is, what symptoms there are and how to work with it. it also gives interesting facts about how long it may have been around, and how many people are diagnosed with it. How this Influenced my Thinking; This just gave me a few extra bits of information about ADHD and its history, i am already familiar with it, as i have a younger brother who was diagnosed with it. Credibility of Source: The authors have degrees, and it is on a credible website about many varying aspects of psychology.

Grohol Date Published: 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: This article describes the different symptoms of ADHD, and the different subtypes of ADHD. How it Influenced my Thinking: I was really surprised by the number of children in america that have ADHD. It says on average one student in each classroom will have it. Credibility of Source: Seems like a very credible source.

Why Relevant and Summary: This website discusses Piagets theory on cognitive development and gives wonderful examples to help elaborate the meanings. How This Influenced My Thinking: These website gave me a clearer understanding as to what Piaget's theory was and how I can correlate it with my writing assignment about how it's proven that children are not just smaller versions of adults. Credibility of Source: Article poted in a educational website ( .edu)

Title: Social Development Author: Growing Miracles Date Published: 2010 Why Relevant and Summary: It's relevant because it talks about the social development and all the aspects of what a toddler learns in this stage of life. It talks about communicating, sharing, putting the child in home settings and setting limits for the child. How This Influenced My Thinking: It influences my thinking because it makes me want to go back to when my children were small so that I can teach them differently than how they were taught. Credibility of Source: I think it's credible because even though it was reprinted with permission, the information is similar to that of research.

Title: Suicidal Thoughts More Common in Kids With Autism: Study Date: 3/21/2013 Author: Amy Norton Why relevant and summary: This article reports on the findings of a scientific study published on the "Research in Autism Spectrum disorders" journal, that children on the spectrum have a higher chance of contemplating or thinking about suicide than their typical peers. This is especially pronounced in those families where the mothers are depressed as well and bulling happens in school. The author reports on both sides which support and are against such findings. How has this changed my thinking: As a mother of a child on the spectrum I am really concerned and interested in finding out how this disorder will affect him, as he grows and what can i do to help. Source credibility: This article was published on an online news magazine and reports findings published in an academic journal.

Title: Parenting Styles and Adolescence Author: Kimberly Kopko Date Published: 2007 Why relevant and summary: This is an excellent overview of Diana Baumrind's parenting styles through Cornell University Department of Policy Analysis and Management. This research provides an overview of the parenting styles presented by Diana Baumrind, and their impact on adolescent development. How this influenced my thinking: These parenting concepts really interest me and inspired me to reflect on the several parenting styles I encountered as a child moving through a variety of foster homes. It also gave me quite a lot to think about in regards to how I parent my own children. Often I question whether or not a child having grown up in such an unstable environment as I did, is able to be a healthy and 'good' parent. However, after reading through these parenting styles, I have realized that my parenting style is natural, healthy and has a good balance of warmth and discipline.
