It makes sense and explains how hte theory was tested. How It Influenced My Thinking: I remember watching a TV show a while ago that showed this phenomenon in monkeys of some kind. I recall that this was new information to me, however I was not surprised. It makes total sense. Nature is brilliant. Credibility of Source: Very credible. Title: How people make their own environments: a theory of genotype → environment effects Author: Sandra Scarr and Kathleen McCartney Date Published: April 1983 Why Relevant and Summary: This is relevant because it goes into much further detail about the genotype → environment effects theory compared to the book. This article proposes that a child's genotype can "directly affect its rearing environment," which is a point that was not as explicit in the textbook. Overall, this article emphasizes a greater role of genotype influence in the process of human development. How This Influenced My Thinking: This influenced my thinking by taking on a more opinionated perspective on the genotype → environment effects theory. The class textbook takes on a very objective approach to explaining, and this article takes it a step further by adding onto it. Although this article is outdated, it still provided me with a new train of thought. I found this to be an interesting article, but at times, hard to read. Credibility of Source: Very good (though outdated).

Title: Faith's Story: In Utero Fetal Surgery for Repair of Spina Bifida Author: No author, video Date uploaded: 2012 Why relevant: Further expounds on the class discussion that we had about surgery in utero to repair spina bifida. Is an interesting video talking, there isn't a great deal of technical information, but it is still pretty good How this influenced my thinking: It made me think more about the development process that a fetus goes through and to think about how important is is to be healthy while pregnant. Even though the causes of spina bifida are unknown, it is still good maintain a healthy lifestyle. Credibility of source: There isn't much technical information, it is more the story of a couple who had surgery in utero to try and correct birth defects

Title: Researching cause and effect Author: Lance Jones Date published: Jan 15th, 2012 Why is this relevant: This power point is relevant because it gives you many recources that would help someone understand what cause and effect is. For example, it provides you with background information on it, states the 3 main characteristics of it, on top of providing you with many examples that really help your understanding of the topic. The slide is very user-friendly and easy to understand. It even provides synonyms for words in case you don't understand. How this influenced my thinking: It has influenced my thinking in a couple ways. One, i never knew there were so many aspects to cause and effect. There are two variables that must be related, two sides to the correlation, and the cause must come before the effect and not vise versa. Two, it really helped me understand why a person would use the cause and effect method, and also why it might not be the best method for some types of studies. Credibility of source: Although id like to think this comes from a very credible source, there is not really anything on the site that indicates it is....

Title: Nature vs Nurture: Outcome Depends on Where You Live Author: Nick Collins Date Published: 12 June 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: This study is actually quite relevant, but I ranked it '6' simply due to the fact that it is based solely on research done in the UK. This article outlines a recent study that compared 6759 pairs of identical and non-identical twins across the UK, in the hopes of determining whether their genes or their environment was more important. The outcome: it depends where you live. Some areas were dubbed 'environemental hotspots' for certain traits, where in other areas the same traits were purely caused by genetics. Be sure to see the video maps at the bottom of the article. How This Influenced My Thinking: I think the nature vs nurture debate is rather subjective. Much of it is based in opinion, but this particular study shows that many things can impact our phenotype. I'm of the opinion that both genetics and environment contribute. For example, I met my biological father for the first time when I was 28 years old. We were surprised to discover that although we were literally strangers, we look very much alike, both have an affinity for foreign languages, both enjoy traveling and adventure, and we enjoy similar types of food. Additionally, I found out that my grandfather was an oral surgeon in Holland during WWII. This was particularly interesting because I've always had a mild fascination with dentistry and oral hygiene! Title: Nature vs. Nurture Revisited Author: Kevin Davies Date Published: 04.17.01 Why Relevant and Summary: We are studying this concept this week and it is the focus of our short critical thinking essay. It is a great article about the findings of the Human Genome Project that analyzes and lists the reason why we should take very seriously the role of environment into human development. How This Influenced My Thinking: It has given me a different perspective on how I see disease, illness and good health. Credibility of Source: It is published on NOVA, and the author is a doctor of genetics.

Title:Nature Nurture in Psychology Author: Saul Mcleod Date Published: 2007 Why Relevant and Summary: This article gives a great description of the two opposing sides of the nature-nurture debate. The author gives many examples for each side and how nature and nurture work together. How This Influenced My Thinking: It really opened my mind to seeing both sides of the debate. Credibility of Source: This article was posted to a psychology website and contained a great number of references, I see this as a very credible source.

Title: Nature Nurture in Psychology Author: Saul McLeod Date Published: 2007 Why Relevant and Summary: Compares and contrasts opposing theories of nature and nurture in the presence of our lives and development. Addressed the different approaches to psychology and its affect on human development. How This Influenced My Thinking: It reinforced some ideas I've had about the way I was raised and the reasons I am the way I am currently. It also encouraged a consideration of some other outside influences on my development. Credibility of Source: References several credible sources.

Title: Bring up BABIES: Director Thomas Balmes and producer Alain Chabat talk Author: Nick Dawsom Date published: March 16, 2010 (movie BABIES released May 7, 2010) Why Relevant and Summary: This beautiful film is relevant to the development of children globally in that it artistically represents the similarity and differences in the first year of life. Four children are followed from birth to their first birthday: Ponijao in Opuwo, Nambia, Mari in Tokyo, Japan, Bagar in Bayanchandmani, Mongolia, and Hattie in San Francisco, California. Some is a challenge to watch, as for us some of the parenting habits are unfamiliar to our culture, while many moments are funny and beautiful. I encourage you to watch the movie, and have linked specifically to this article so that you can also read about the director and producers' thoughts on the film. Credibility of source: Very credible.

Why Relevant and Summary: In this article she clearly explains the topic of nature vs. nurture and goes into how it is still undetermined if our genes play a role in our personality. How it influenced my thinking: It made me wonder if my personality trait that are similar to my parents came from them genetically or if it is similar because that is what i grew up around. Credibility of source: This article seems somewhat credible, though i didn't see any references.

How This Influenced My Thinking: Listening to real people tell their story on being twins and a part of a study of how nature vs. nurture has impacted them individually has contributed greatly to my understanding.

Title: The Latest Science of Nature Versus Nurture Author: Stefan Molyneux Date Published: May 25, 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: This video is breaks down all factors from genetics to environmental influences that contribute to human development. The video shows the importance of prenatal care to environmental effects on individuals after they have been born. How This Influenced My Thinking: Reviewing this video has really made me think on which plays a bigger role on a person's development. I have come to the conclusion that genetics play the leading role but not by much. The human fetal stage is very fragile and will induce any stress that it has encountered, from emotional stress, to chemical through the actions of the mother. Credibility of Source: Stefan Molyneux who is a radio broadcaster, is really a collector of information rather than a scholarly researcher, who merely reposts other's findings from educated researchers.

Title: Height Hopes A new study identifies potential height genes Author: No authors are listed Date Published: also unlisted, but it was written sometime after 2007 because that was the date of one the references used in the article. Why Relevant: The article talks about how height is based on your genes as well as you your environment. It mentions twin studies as well as talking about how scientists are trying to determine which genes are responsible for determining height. How This Influenced My Thinking: The article had some great information about twin studies and how they have been used to look at how much your height is a genetic factor. Credibility of Source: Decent, The website is put out through a museum that is associated with the University of Stanford. But since there isn't a date, or author it lowers the credibility of the source.

Date Published: 2001 Why Relevant and Summary: This article is very relevant because it discusses how nature and nurture can play a role in the human development. The authors do so by discussing how schizophrenia can be both due to nature and nurture by giving examples. How This Influenced My Thinking: This article showed me how both nature and nurture can effect the human development and we cat rule out one for the other. Credibility of Source: This source was found on ebscohost and is from the journal "Perspectives in Psychiatric."

Title: Genetics Author:QLD Science teachers Date published: ND Why relevant and summary: This site discusses genetics and many of the terms we were introduced to in our text and in class. It goes over dominant and recessive genes, what alleles are, phenotypes, genotypes and much more. It provides you with examples and definitions of words, and walks you through how to determine if a trait is dominant or recessive. How it influenced my thinking: It influenced my thinking by helping me see the difference between things like phenotypes and genotypes, as well as providing pictures and diagrams to further help with my understanding. Credibility of source: The site is obviously made by science teachers but it doesn't say who, or where they are from. I'd say this site is credible because it seems to provide you with good and accurate information, but you probably can't use it as a source for a research paper.

Brent Date Published:April 1, 2004 Why Relevant and Summary: Contains information on teratogens from various kinds to what malformations they can cause in the body. This article starts off by describing the criteria to be classified as a teratogen. There are three categories of congenital malformations: unknown, genetic, and environmental. The severity of effects of teratogen are determined by time of exposure and amount of exposure or threshold dose. How This Influenced My Thinking: There are specific criteria in order to be classified as caused by teratogen. Credibility of Source: The source is highly credible. It comes from the Journal of American Academy of Pediatrics.

Title: Genes vs. Environment Author: University of Edinburgh Date Published: May 16, 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: This article provides information on over 800 sets of experiments that were done to prove how genes played a more important role in development than the environment. How This Influenced My Thinking: This made me want to conduct my own research or do my own study on twins who were separated at birth to see how identical their characteristics were after five or ten years of being apart. That would help me see for myself if genetics really do have a greater inpact than environment does on development. Credibility of Source: This source is credible because the information was derived from universities, journals, and other research organizations and they have references to all the information they used.
