This explanation, from (channel) Thirteen/Ed Online, defines collaborative learning as the larger category of students learning in groups. Cooperative learning, a subset, is where students are in small groups, working together on structured activities. Work is assessed both individually and as a group.

Center for Student Success (CSS) is part of the Research and Planning Group for California Community Colleges (the RP group). This is a database of nearly 300 case studies.

From the article, "Math My Way groups cohorts of students who have similar math skill levels." Students then work in small groups, and one-on-one with instructors, as well as using both computer and paper drills and games.

GSCC's own Kathy Perino is an instructor in this program, and is quoted in the article.

Group Works ("a pattern language for bringing life to meetings and other gatherings") has created a deck of cards, where each of the 91 cards describes one "theme" [my term] that they feel makes up the pattern language. 

An interesting way to present the individual items that make up their pattern language. These cards are available as a deck, as a PDF, and soon as a mobile app.

This is a video of LS's class (posted to YouTube by her); the marshmallow challenge became a popular ice-breaker among GSCC faculty. Week 1, semester 4.

Based in the Educational Communications and Technology Program in Curriculum & Instruction at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, The Games, Learning, and Society group is a collection of academic researchers, interactive media (or game) developers, and government and industry leaders who investigate how interactive media environments or "video games" can be used in education.

Jointly authored by researchers, faculty, and administrators from The Center for Student Success and the RP group (the Research and Planning Gropu for California Community Colleges), March 2007.

Presented by the Center for Teaching at Vanderbilt University, this guide provides excellent resources to a wide range of cooperative learning publications, from a guide (Students Working in Small Groups) to key articles on the topic. There are two case studies, provided by instructors who have adopted some cooperative learning practices in the classroom.

Foothill College (a GSCC school) offers the innovative and award-winning Math My Way program. From the description, Math My Way offers "a hands-on series of self-paced math learning modules that combine patient, caring, understanding instruction with a group of students who have similar math skill levels."

KP, a GSCC faculty member, is part of the Math My Way team. On March 12, 2010, she posted that the team would be meeting with Bill Gates in April.

Founded in 1880, today the Conference on Basic Writing (CBW) is a special interest group of the Conference on College Communications and Composition (CCCC). The CBW's mission "is to create a network of basic writing professionals."

Positive outcomes have been reported for university preparation courses for students without disabilities. Little is known about whether these courses can offer the same benefit to students with learning disabilities and whether the inclusion of psychosocial factors, in addition to academic skills, would benefit both groups.

Scientists have discovered proof that the evolution of intelligence and larger brain sizes can be driven by cooperation and teamwork, shedding new light on the origins of what it means to be human. The study appears online in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B and was led by scientists at Trinity College Dublin: PhD student, Luke McNally and Assistant Professor Dr Andrew Jackson at the School of Natural Sciences in collaboration with Dr Sam Brown of the University of Edinburgh.
