Part of Carnegie Mellon University, the Open Learning Initiative is, like GSCC, the recipient of a Gates Foundation technology-related grant. The grant is "for the collaborative development, use, evaluation, and continuous improvement of web-based open learning environments for high-demand "gatekeeper" courses" (from Gates Foundation press release).

From the Overview page, Next Generation seeks to "identify, improve, and scale solutions and will stimulate adoption of the many ways technology can deepen, accelerate, and support learning." The Gates Foundation is one funder.

PA brought this to our attention in October Coffee Klatch, having read several articles about the new initiative.

Like GSCC, NCAT was also the recipient of a Gates Foundation emerging technologies grant. NCAT will redesign developmental math courses in community colleges integrating technology and learner-centered pedagogy.

Along with the GSCC project, the Monterey Institute was also awarded a Gates Foundation technology-related grant. The Institute's grant is to produce developmental math materials that will be released as Open Educational Resources (OER).

Presented by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, April 2010. This guide, "is the result of a year-long cross-foundation effort to develop common principles, approaches, and taxonomies to help staff decide how best to allocate time and resources for data collection and analysis." Open University, a successful British online public university to be used as a model in the U.S. The goal is to help students who are intimidated by higher education adapt to and succeed in college. Next Generation Learning Challenges, a Gates funded initiative, will adapt two free Open University, at-your-own-pace online courses for use at about a dozen U.S. colleges and universities this academic year: one to help students be more comfortable with math so they do better on placement tests or move more quickly through remedial courses, and another to teach students skills to prepare them for college.

From the article, "Math My Way groups cohorts of students who have similar math skill levels." Students then work in small groups, and one-on-one with instructors, as well as using both computer and paper drills and games.

GSCC's own Kathy Perino is an instructor in this program, and is quoted in the article.

Foothill College (a GSCC school) offers the innovative and award-winning Math My Way program. From the description, Math My Way offers "a hands-on series of self-paced math learning modules that combine patient, caring, understanding instruction with a group of students who have similar math skill levels."

KP, a GSCC faculty member, is part of the Math My Way team. On March 12, 2010, she posted that the team would be meeting with Bill Gates in April.
