The Art and Science of Teaching Developmental Mathematics: Building Perspective Through... - 0 views

  •
By Michael W. Galbraith, and Melanie Jones in Journal of Developmental Education; 30.2 (2006): 20-27. Author's abstract: This article suggests that a balance of the art and science of teaching is essential if the learning and teaching process is to be a meaningful and rewarding educational journey. This notion is explored through a dialogue, held over a 3 year period, with a developmental mathematics instructor at a community college who discovered that technique alone was not sufficient to becoming a good instructor. An unusual situation occurred as a result of the dialogue: Discussion of research-based literature on college teaching and personal experiential reflectivity merged and resulted in an organizing framework for understanding the artistic and mechanic elements of effective instruction. Working Examples - About - 0 views

The author is asking others: Do you think this problem and the proposed solution or approach to it I explicate here shows promise to be an important part of our emerging field or collaboration? If not, show me why not. If so, help me develop my ideas, and join yours to mine, in order to build this new field or collaboration.
  • WEP is meant to be a platform for starting and sustaining emerging areas of research, intervention, and practice.
  • This new form of scholarship stresses innovation, building new collaborations, and discovering new paths and not just retreading old ones.

Gloria Anzaldua interview - 0 views

  • G.A.: Well, when Chicanas read Borderlands, when it was read by little Chicanas in particular, it somehow legitimated them. They saw that I was code-switching, which is what a lot of Chicanas were doing in real life as well, and for the first time after reading that book they seemed to realize, “Oh, my way of writing and speaking is okay” and, “Oh, she is writing about La Virgen de Guadalupe, about la Llorona, about the corridos, the gringos, the abusive, et cetera. So if she [Gloria Anzaldua] does it, why not me as well?” The book gave them permission to do the same thing. So they started using code-switching and writing about all the issues they have to deal with in daily life. To them, it was like somebody was saying: You are just as important as a woman as anybody from another race. And the experiences that you have are worth being told and written about.
  •
By Karin Ikas, published on Aunt Lute (publisher) site. Gloria Anzaldua is a Chicana poet whose work embodies the idea of code-switching. As she says in this interview (see highlighted portion), her code-switching helped empower other young Chicano/a writers to do the same.
